In arid and semiarid rangelands, soil erosion has been widely considered an important soil degradation process and one of the main factors responsible for declining soil fertility. In this study, we determined the sediment production and the enrichment ratios of clay, organic C, and total N by using rainfall simulations on runoff plots (0.60 × 1.67 m) in three plant communities of northeastern Patagonia: grass (GS), degraded grass with scattered shrubs (DGS), and degraded shrub steppes (DSS). Our results clearly indicate that spatial variability in soil loss rate and enrichment process exists as a result of the local differences in both plant composition and soil surface characteristics. Sediment production was significantly lower in the GS (14.2 g m−2) compared with the DGS and DSS (38.2 and 51.5 g m−2, respectively). In the GS, the enrichment ratio of clay was significantly greater (3.9) and enrichment ratio of organic C was lower (3.1) than in the DGS and the DSS, though differences in enrichment ratios of total N were not significant. The high rate of soil loss and nutrients through overland-flow may limit the opportunities that promote the pathway from DGS back to GS community, favoring the dominance of shrubs.Fil: Chartier, Marcelo Pablo. Soil erosion rates in rangelands of northeastern Patagonia: A dendrogeomorphological analysis using exposed shrub roots

Soil erosion is an important process of land degradation in many rangelands and a significant driver of desertification in the world's drylands. Dendrogeomorphology is an alternative to traditional methods for determining soil erosion rate. Specifically, the vertical distance between the upper portion of exposed roots and the actual soil surface can be used as a bioindicator of erosion since plant establishment. In this study, we determined (i) the soil erosion rate from exposed roots of the dwarf shrub Margyricarpus pinnatus [Lam.] Kuntze in two ecological sites in the northeastern rangelands of Patagonia and (ii) the relationship between shrub age and upper root diameter. We selected two ecological sites, a pediment-like plateau and a flank pediment, where the dominant soils were Xeric Haplocalcids and Xeric Calciargids, respectively. The soil erosion rates in the pediment-like plateau and in the flank pediment were 2.4 and 3.1 mm yr- 1, respectively. Data clearly indicate a high rate of soil erosion during the mean 8-year life span of the dwarf shrubs in degraded patches, which represent ~ 10% of surface cover in the study area. Simple linear regression analysis yielded a highly significant predictive model for age estimation of M. pinnatus plants using the upper root diameter as a predictor variable. The measurement of ground lowering against datable exposed roots represents a simple method for the determination of soil erosion rates. In combination with other soil surface features, it was used to infer the episodic nature of soil erosion. This approach could be particularly useful for monitoring the effects of land management practices on recent soil erosion and for the establishment of records in regions where historical data regarding this process are scarce or absent.Fil: Chartier, Marcelo Pablo. In grazed semiarid ecosystems, considerable spatial variability in soil infiltration exists as a result of vegetation and soil patchiness. Despite widespread recognition that important interactions and feedbacks occur between vegetation, runoff and erosion, currently there is only limited quantitative information on the control mechanisms that lead to differences in infiltration from different vegetation types. In this paper, we determine (i) the relationship between vegetation and soil surface characteristics and (ii) the soil infiltration rate by using rainfall simulations on runoff plots (0.60 x 1.67 m) in three plant communities of northeastern Patagonia: grass (GS), degraded grass with scattered shrubs (DGS), and degraded shrub steppes (DSS). Our results clearly indicate that vegetation and soil infiltration are closely coupled. Total infiltration was significantly higher in the GS (69.6 mm) compared with the DGS and DSS (42.9 and 28.5 mm, respectively). In the GS, soil infiltration rate declined more slowly than the others communities, reaching a terminal infiltration rate significantly greater (57.7 mm) than those of DGS and DSS (25.7 and 12.9 mm, respectively). The high rate of water losses via overland-flow may limit the possibilities for grass seedling emergence and establishment and favor the persistent dominance of shrubs.Fil: Chartier, Marcelo Pablo. Mathematical models are useful tools to predict soil loss by water erosion. The recent development of the WEPP model and its use in assessing the risks of erosion in rangelands has led to significant advances in the field of erosion and soil conservation of these ecosystems. In this work we examine the efficiency of the WEPP model in predicting the hydrological processes and soil erosion in semiarid rangelands of the northeast Chubut Province. Three plant communities along a soil degradation gradient were identified: grass with scattered shrubs (EH), grass-shrubs (EHA), and degraded shrub steppes (EA). In each of these communities simulated rainfall (100 mm h-1 for 30 min) was applied on 1 m2 (0.6 x 1.67 m) plots and total runoff and sediment production were collected. Using the soil surface condition data from each plot, runoff and sediment production were estimated by means of the WEPP model. We found a low efficiency of the WEPP model to predict runoff (Efficiency, E = 0.14) and soil erosion (E = -0.93). The WEPP-estimated runoff and soil losses showed high sensitivity to changes in rainfall and slope parameters and moderate sensitivity to changes in soil cover, texture, soil erodability and effective hydraulic conductivity. The runoff and sediment production estimated by the WEPP model were significantly different among plant communities (p < 0.05). The difference between the estimated and observed mean values varied in the different plant communities: runoff according to the WEPP model was 55.5% greater in the EH and sediment production was 69.6, 62.7 and 17.5% lower, respectively, in the EH, EHA, and EA than the observed values. These results suggest that it is necessary to calibrate the model for local conditions and to incorporate rangeland stratification according to the different soil-vegetation units.Fil: Chartier, Marcelo Pablo. Abundance and growth rate of Margyricarpuspinnatus under different disturbances in two rangelands of the NE of Chubut

Livestock grazing, fíre and soil mechanical disturbancc may differentially modify the vegetation structure. Although sorne species can tolerate these disturbances, other can be affected, decreasing their growth rate, density, size or be totally removed. Understanding how different species respond to different disturbances may help to identify range condition indicators. The aim of this study was to assess the density, growth rate and size of Margyricarpus pinnatus in burned, grazed and mechanically disturbed areas and under different soil surface conditions compared to non grazed areas. The two study areas were located in the NE of the Chubut province. Plant density was assessed in 150 m2 plots. Plant growth rate was determined by dendrochronological analysis and plant size by mean of morphometric variables. Data were analyzed by parametric statistics. Sheep grazing negatively affected plant density, growth rate and plant size. However, fíre and surface soil conditions did not affect these variables. Soil mechanical disturbance increased plant density but not their growth rates. Our results indicate that M. pinnatus could be a good indicator of grazing intensity and a potential indicator of range condition.Fil: Nievas, J.. Effect of livestock on the growth of Rosa rubiginosa in a mountain range: A dendrochronological approach

    Get PDF
In the present study, we used dendrochronological tools to determine the effect of domestic livestock on the cumulative radial growth of Rosa rubiginosa, a shrub native to Europe that has been introduced to the mountains of central Argentina. We described R. rubiginosa growth rings, we built a ring width chronology using 18 stems from a homogeneous site, and finally compared rings width in 40 individuals distributed in areas with and without livestock but otherwise similar. Our results demonstrated the negative effect of livestock on the cumulative radial growth of invasive species R. rubiginosa. In this sense, the livestock would be acting as a biotic filter for the invasion of this species in the mountains of Córdoba (Argentina) and may be considered as a tool to reduce R. rubiginosa growth in invaded areas, where livestock will not cause other damages. We consider that the measurement of annual ring width against datable basal stems represents a simple method for the determination of radial growth rates. This approach could be particularly useful for monitoring the effects of land management practices on the invasion of woody species. Fil: Mestre, Luciana Mariel. Dynamics of erosion processes in the tropics: a dendrogeomorphological approach in an Ultisol of southeastern Brazil

    No full text
Background and aims: Soil erosion is one of the degradation processes that historically has caused great impacts on agricultural activities and the environment. It is responsible for soil loss, reduced productivity and various environmental impacts. Given the importance of research related to understanding the soil erosion process, the dendrogeomorphology technique has a significant role in qualifying and quantifying this degradation process. It is a technique that uses the structure of the root and stem wood of trees affected by erosion processes to date these events and measure the rate of soil loss. The objective of this study was to understand the dynamics of the erosion process through the dendrogeomorphological approach. Methods: The changes in growth pattern of exposed roots of Esenbeckia leiocarpa trees (guarantã) were studied, such as growth ring width, eccentricity, vessel frequency and scars. Results: The results obtained demonstrated the potential of the species for dendrogeomorphological studies, since the changes in growth patterns after exposure allowed to date the first year of root exposition. Conclusions: The dendrogeomorphology technique proved to be effective in understanding the process dynamics of complex systems, such as the opening of permanent and ephemeral gullies. In addition, it is effective in inferring soil loss rates.Fil: Bovi, Renata Cristina.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
