    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Characterization of brain changes observed by MRI and histology following the development of chronic neuropathic pain

    La prévalence de la douleur chronique (DC), son impact négatif sur la qualité de vie et l’inefficacité des traitements actuels justifie l’importance de la recherche sur la DC. Des changements au niveau cérébral ont déjà été observés entre patients sains et souffrant de DC. Cependant, les phénomènes neuronaux et non-neuronaux qui sous-tendent ces différences demeurent incompris. Il est donc pertinent de savoir quel effet la DC a sur la plasticité cérébrale. Pour ce faire, l’analyse structurelle cérébrale par l’imagerie à résonance magnétique (IRM) couplée à des analyses comportementales et immunohistologiques pourrait élucider les changements cellulaires responsables des variations observées par IRM. Un modèle pré-clinique de DC neuropathique est utilisé dans cette étude, le modèle SNI (Spared Nerve Injury) qui présente l’avantage d’être robuste, ce qui permet de produire un phénotype douloureux stable et reproductible. Après l’implémentation du modèle de DC, des tests comportementaux pour détecter l’hypersensibilité, la répartition du poids ainsi que des tests évaluant les changements affectifs tels que des comportements anxio-dépressifs ont été effectués tout au long du protocole pour confirmer la présence de DC chez le modèle utilisé. Les cerveaux des animaux ont été imagés par une IRM structurelle de type T2* avant la chirurgie et 28 jours après. Enfin, les cerveaux ont été récoltés pour procéder au marquage immunohistologique. Selon les résultats des tests comportementaux, les animaux SNI (n=11) montrent une progression vers des comportements concordant avec des symptômes douloureux. Le groupe douleur présente une valeur moyenne de DMG augmentée dans certaines régions cérébrales notamment le cortex frontal d’association. Les marquages de populations cellulaires neuronales suggèrent une potentielle relation de proportionnalité inverse entre la valeur de DMG et la densité neuronale. Des procédures de marquages d’autres populations cellulaires et structures cérébrales sont entreprises à présent afin de mettre en relation ces données avec les valeurs acquises en IRM : un outil de segmentation automatisé en cours de développement permettra le marquage à grande échelle de coupes cérébrales et ainsi d’établir des liens entre les densités cellulaires aux observations par IRM et aux tests comportementaux.Abstract: The high prevalence of chronic pain (CP), its negative impact on quality of life, and the limited efficacy of current treatments highlight the need for further research in this field. Structural brain changes have been reported between healthy individuals and patients suffering from CP. However, the neuronal and non-neuronal mechanisms underlying these differences remain poorly understood. It is therefore relevant to investigate how CP affects brain plasticity. Structural brain analysis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), combined with behavioral and immunohistological analyses, could help elucidate the cellular mechanisms responsible for MRI-detected changes. A preclinical model of neuropathic CP, the Spared Nerve Injury (SNI) model, was used in this study. This model offers robustness and the ability to reliably induce a stable pain phenotype. Following the induction of chronic pain, behavioral tests were conducted throughout the experimental protocol to assess hypersensitivity, weight distribution, and affective alterations such as anxiety- and depressionlike behaviors, confirming the presence of CP in the animal model. Structural T2*-weighted MRI scans were acquired before surgery and again 28 days post-surgery. Brains were subsequently collected for immunohistochemical processing. Behavioral results indicated that SNI animals (n = 11) progressively developed pain-associated behaviors. Increased gray matter density (GMD) values were observed in specific brain regions, notably the associative frontal cortex. Neuronal population labeling suggests a potential inverse relationship between GMD values and neuronal density. Ongoing labeling of additional cellular populations and brain structures aims to correlate histological data with MRI findings. An automated segmentation tool currently under development will allow largescale labeling of brain sections to establish links between cell density, MRI-detected changes, and behavioral measures

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
