    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

    Solution, solid-state, and computational analysis of agostic interactions in a coherent set of low-coordinate rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes

    A homologous family of low-coordinate complexes of the formulation trans-[M(2,2′-biphenyl)(PR3)2][BArF4] (M=Rh, Ir; R=Ph, Cy, iPr, iBu) has been prepared and extensively structurally characterised. Enabled through a comprehensive set of solution phase (VT 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy) and solid-state (single crystal X-ray diffraction) data, and analysis in silico (DFT-based NBO and QTAIM analysis), the structural features of the constituent agostic interactions have been systematically interrogated. The combined data substantiates the adoption of stronger agostic interactions for the IrIII compared to RhIII complexes and, with respect to the phosphine ligands, in the order PiBu3>PCy3>PiPr3>PPh3. In addition to these structure–property relationships, the effect of crystal packing on the agostic interactions was investigated in the tricyclohexylphosphine complexes. Compression of the associated cations, through inclusion of a more bulky solvent molecule (1,2-difluorobenzene vs. CH2Cl2) in the lattice or collection of data at very low temperature (25 vs. 150 K), lead to small but statistically significant shortening of the M−H−C distances

    A generic implementation framework for stereo matching algorithms

    Traditional area-based matching techniques make use of similarity metrics such as the Sum of Absolute Differences(SAD), Sum of Squared Differences (SSD) and Normalised Cross Correlation (NCC). Non-parametric matching algorithms such as the rank and census rely on the relative ordering of pixel values rather than the pixels themselves as a similarity measure. Both traditional area-based and non-parametric stereo matching techniques have an algorithmic structure which is amenable to fast hardware realisation. \ud \ud This investigation undertakes a performance assessment of these two families of algorithms for robustness to radiometric distortion and random noise. A generic implementation framework is presented for the stereo matching problem and the relative hardware requirements for the various metrics investigated

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    H-index and research evaluation: A suggested set of components for developing a comprehensive author-level index

    The H-index has been investigated in various studies; this index has many strengths that have made it popular. However, it also has weaknesses, due to which other indicators have been developed. This study aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the H-index and provide the minimum set of necessary components for developing a comprehensive author-level index. In this systematic literature review, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Emerald, and ProQuest databases were searched to identify relevant studies. From the number of 14,253 retrieved studies, after two stages of screening, 81 studies were selected according to the eligibility criteria for data extraction. The findings of the study led to the identification of 15 strengths in the three categories of Quality Features, Simplicity, and Suitability, and 13 weaknesses in the six categories of Publications, Citations, Academic Age, Author Credit Allocation, Variety of Fields, and mathematical calculation for H-index. Finally, 28 components were identified as the minimum set of necessary components to develop a comprehensive author-level index to help evaluate researchers more realistically and fairly. The minimum components that need to be considered in developing a comprehensive author-level index can be proposed as follows: Quality Features, Simplicity, Suitability, Publications, Citations, Academic Age, Author Credit Allocation, Variety of Fields, and mathematical calculation

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Shorebird Staging and Migratory Movements at Chaplin and Reed Lakes, Saskatchewan, with Implications for Wind Energy Development

    Increasing knowledge of long distance shorebird (order Charadriiformes) migrations may elucidate causes of shorebird declines and direct management within migratory routes. Migrating birds rely on staging sites, areas with reliably high food abundance, for rest and refueling. Stressors at these sites could have population level impacts and post-migration carry-over effects. My thesis research examined staging bird abundance and migratory movements to and from Chaplin and Reed Lakes, Saskatchewan, a major staging site of hemispheric importance in the Central Flyway used by over 100,000 shorebirds each year. My objectives were to 1) examine time of peak abundance by multiple migratory shorebird species using Chaplin and Reed Lakes during spring and fall migration, as well as estimate spring stopover duration and population size of Sanderling (Calidris alba) and 2) investigate movement patterns of migratory shorebirds as they arrive at and depart from Chaplin and Reed Lakes, and determine the extrinsic factors influencing observed flight patterns to inform risk from current and future wind energy developments. I used a combination of point count surveys and radio telemetry data to meet my objectives. Staging, arctic-breeding species at Chaplin and Reed Lakes were counted weekly during spring northward (2014 – 2017) and fall southward (2016 – 2017) migration by conducting point count surveys to examine temporal patterns and estimate population size. Detailed assessments of my focal species, Sanderling included capture, banding and radio-tagging in the Gulf of Mexico and at Chaplin Lake (2015-2017) to track their migratory movements and stopover duration in relation to weather and time of day variables using automated radio telemetry. Spring migration involved larger numbers of species (including species at risk), larger numbers of individuals, and more concentrated timing among years than fall migration. Sanderlings staged for a mean of 11.1 (95% CI = 8.59 –13.6) days and population size averaged ~75,000 birds, with estimates ranging from ~56,000 to ~91,000 among years. Population estimates were seven to 17 times larger than raw peak abundance counts, demonstrating the need to account for stopover duration in population estimates. Chaplin and Reed Lakes departures, but not arrivals, were significantly influenced by time and weather. Sanderlings were more likely to depart at sunset or sunrise when winds were blowing towards the northwest at intermediate speeds and less likely to depart when winds were blowing towards the southeast at high speeds. Knowledge of when large numbers of birds are using the area and what environmental conditions are associated with migratory movements can be used to identify where and when birds are at the greatest risks of collision with wind energy turbines. My results have implications for shorebird conservation at Chaplin and Reed Lakes and other staging sites in the Central flyway, and my thesis provides recommendations for management and mitigation of threats from current and future wind energy developments
