Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textFrom march, 1980 to february, 1981, regular biweekly beach seine fish samples were taken at eight fixed stations along a 67 km stretch of sand beach just south of the mouth of Lagoa dos Patos, RS, Brazil. A total of 49,170 fishes, belonging to 41 teleost species, were caught by a 9 m beach seine in the marginal surf zone waters less than 1.5 m deep. Eleven species, represented mostly by juveniles, were present in more than 99 % of the catches. The highest (20) and the lowest (6) species diversity were found in the months of february (summer) and July (winter), respectively. four species, Trachinotus marginatus, Mugil liza, Menticirrhus littoralis and Oncopterus darwini were present in the catch year-round. Except for Mugil liza, which was also very abundant in the Lagoa, the others were rarely or have never been caught in the estuary. Seven species were caught in 6 to 11 months of the year, including, Odontesthes bonariensis, Xenomelaniris brasiliensis, Mugil curema, M. hospes Lycengraulis grossidens, Brevoortia pectinata and Micropogonias furnieri, all typical estuarine fishes. Fishes caught on the beach up to 5 months of the year were Anchoa marinii, Sardinella brasiliensis, Caranx latus, Ramnogaster arcuata and Jenynsia lineata. Among them, only A. marinii showed a peak of high abundance in summer, and the combined catches of the remaining species did not reach to 1 % of total yearly catch. Furthermore, 25 species were caught '' incidentally" mostly during the warmer months of the year. They included juveniles of coastal marine and estuarine fishes, usually found in slightly deeper waters of the area, and tropical fishes from the north. Few characids were also caught on the beach, which were probably washed out from the lagoa ar small coastal creeks. An excepcionally large catch on the 24th of february, 1981, was estimated to have 51,851 individuals of Mugil hospes. Data of this catch were treated separetely and were not included in the general analysis of the fish comunity. The surf zone of the study area is apparentely proviging a fish community assemblage different from the adjacent estuary of lagoa dos Patos and coast waters over 5 meters of depth. lt is an important nursery ground and possibly also a transient zone for many species in southern Brazil. Preliminary observations on the commercial haul seine catches have been included in the discussion of life histories and movements for the most abundant species.De março de 1980 a fevereiro de 1981, amostragens quinzenais regulares de peixes, através de arrastos de praia, foram efetuadas em oito estações fixas ao longo de 67 km da praia arenosa situada imediatamente ao sul da desembocadura da Lagoa dos Patos, RS, Brasil. Um total de 49.170 peixes, englobando 41 espécies de teleósteos, foi capturado com uma rede de arrasto de praia, de 9 m, na zona marginal de arrebentação, em profundidades menores que 1,5 m. Mais de 99 % das capturas compreenderam 11 espécies, a maioria juvenis. Fevereiro (verão) apresentou a maior diversidade de espécies (20), e julho (inverno), a menor (6). Quatro espécies, Trachinotus marginatus, Mugil liza, Menticirrhus littoralis e Oncopterus darwini, se fizeram representar nas capturas durante todo o ano. Com exceção de Mugil liza, que foi também muito abundante na Lagoa, as demais espécies foram raramente, ou nunca, capturadas no estuário. Sete espécies foram capturadas entre 6 e 11 meses do ano, incluindo Odontesthes bonariensis, Xenomelaniris brasiliensis, Mugil curema, M. hospes Lycengraulis grossidens, Brevoortia pectinata e Micropogonias furnieri, todas elas tipicamente estuarinas. Os peixes capturados na praia em até 5 meses do ano foram: Anchoa marinii, Sardinella brasiliensis, Caranx latus, Ramnogaster arcuata e Jenynsia lineata. Dentre elas, apenas A. marinii apresentou um pico de abundância máxima no verão, sendo que as capturas combinadas das espécies remanescentes não atingiram 1 % da captura total anual. Outrossim, 25 espécies foram capturadas "incidentalmente", mormente durante os meses quentes do ano. Estas últimas incluíram juvenis de peixes estuarinos e marinhos costeiros usualmente encontrados, na área, em águas ligeiramente mais profundas, além de peixes tropicais do norte. Uns poucos caracídeos foram também capturados na praia, os quais foram, provavelmente, carreados com o fluxo da Lagoa ou de pequenos riachos costeiros. Em 24 de fevereiro de 1981, ocorreu uma captura excepcionalmente numerosa de Mugil hospes, estimada em 51.851 indivíduos. Os dados relativos a essa captura foram tratados separadamente, não tendo sido incluídos na análise geral da comunidade de peixes. A zona de arrebentação da área estudada provê, aparentemente, uma associação de peixes diferente daquela observada no estuário e em águas costeiras com mais de 5 m de profundidade. Representa uma importante zona de crescimento e alimentação, e, provavelmente, também uma área transitória para muitas espécies de peixes do sul do Brasil. Observações preliminares das capturas dos arrastos comerciais foram incluídas na discussão do ciclo de vida e migração das espécies mais abundantes
