Taking a New Contour: A Novel Approach to Panel Unit Root Tests
The paper introduces a novel approach to testing for unit roots in panels. Following Chang and Park (2004), the approach takes a new contour that is drawn along the line given by the equi-squared-sum instead of the traditional one given by the equi-sample-size. As we show in the paper, the distributions of the unit root tests based on nonlinear IV t-ratios (which includes the Dickey-Fuller test as a special case) are asymptotically normal along the new contour. The normal asymptotics hold under both the null of a unit root and the local-to-unity alternative. Moreover, they are applicable also for the models with intercept, as long as is used the demeaning method relying only on the past information. Subsequently, we demonstrate that this startling finding may be exploited to invent tools and methodologies for the effective inferences in panel unit root models. In particular, our theory implies that the individual tests may be regarded asymptotically as normal samples if they are computed using the samples having the same sum of squares across all cross-sectional units, which may be obtained through the standard bootstrap method. Consequently, we may conveniently use various functionals of the individual tests to do valid inferences in panels.
The Passive Display Case
Display cases around the world contain some of the most precious objects of our cultural heritage, from Leonardo Da Vinci’s La Gioconda to the Gutenberg Bible. We trust that these display cases will protect our objects of cultural heritage from vandalism, light, pollution and most importantly, moisture. Nevertheless, museums sometimes find that although their objects of art are in display cases, these are not providing the ideal protective microclimate. Hygroscopic materials can help restore this protective microclimate, but there are situations where the use of moisture-buffering materials is ineffective. This project aims to find when these situations occur. In order to do this, a computational and experimental model were developed, and the results are evaluated in this report.Building Engineering/Building Technology & PhysicsStructural EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
Interactief hydrologisch computerprogramma, Hydrolin
Civil Engineering and GeosciencesWater mangement en hydrologi
Innovative Ways of Dealing with Existing Problems: How to reliably Assess the Cause of Damage of Masonry Structures in an Area with Man-induced Earthquakes?
Groningen, a province in the northern part of the Netherlands, suffers from earthquakes because of gas drilling. The residential building stock in Groningen was not designed for these loads. Over the years a lot of smaller and larger damage has developed, possibly - but not necessarily - caused by the effects of gas drilling. Delft University of Technology was asked by the Dutch government to come up with a method to reliably assess the cause of damage of masonry structures in Groningen. This paper discusses the developed approach for reliably assessing the causes of failure of masonry structures in earthquake-prone areas and the way innovative monitoring techniques were applied.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Mechanic
Efficient material use through smart flexible formwork method
Concrete is an excellent material for application in free-form architecture as a result of its initial fluid state. Double-curved building shapes have been realized in various fibre-reinforced mixtures, using advanced CNC-milled formwork systems. However, a substantial reduction of material use is still possible on two ends: by using a flexible formwork very thin and structurally efficient elements can be manufactured, reinforced with fibres or textiles. Moreover, the reusability of the flexible formwork considerably limits the waste material that was always remaining after the use of milled formwork systems. This paper discusses experiments with both formwork and mixtures in a PhD-study of the first author, demonstrating the ecological potential of this innovative production method.Structural EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied MechanicsEnvironmental & Climate Desig
