    Resisting the author: JT LeRoy's fictional authorship

    In the last decade, the interest in the relation between author and text, author and autobiography, seems to have grown. In my article, I use the story of the author JT LeRoy as a framework to analyse what this growing interest means for our understanding of the word "author." JT LeRoy’s work was considered to be autobiographical or, perhaps, autofictional. However, the authorship of LeRoy appeared to be based on a hoax; JT LeRoy proved to be a fictitious persona, made up by the writer Laura Albert. How does the unmasking of an author influence the reception of his/her work? And what does it teach us about the relation between reader and text, reader and author? In my article, I attempt to answer these questions, and, furthermore, I discuss how LeRoy’s mixed gender relates to the question of the dead male author and the hyped "constructed" female author

    All-fibre-optic clock recovery from non-return-to-zero format data

    The author; demonstrate an all-optical clock recovery scheme from non-return-to-zero format data, with an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a mode-locked Er-doped fibre laser. Since this scheme consists of an all-fibre device, the clock recovery bandwidth can extend to the terahertz region. Such all-optical clock recovery techniques will find application in ultra-high speed all-optical communication systems

    An efficient borrowing channel assignment scheme for cellular mobile systems

    In this paper, we propose a new efficient borrowing channel assignment (BCA) scheme, which consists of two phases. The first ordinary channel allocation phase borrows a channel from neighboring cells by an impact-based borrowing strategy, The second channel reallocation phase has a reallocation procedure for locked-channel utilization and a reallocation procedure for efficient channel reuse. Simulation results show that in both uniform and nonuniform traffic cases, our schemes significantly reduce the system blocking probability over the other existing schemes. Furthermore, one of our schemes has a much smaller number of reallocations than other compared schemes

    A Note on Entanglement Entropy for Primary Fermion Fields in JT Gravity

    In this paper we analyse and discuss 2D Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity coupled to primary fermion fields in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. We get a particular solution of the massless Dirac field outside the extremal black hole horizon and find the solution for the dilaton in JT gravity. Two dimensional JT gravity spacetime is conformally flat, we calculate the two point correlators of primary fermion fields under the Weyl transformations. The key point of this work is to present a standard technique which is called resolvent rather than CFT methods. We redefine the fields in terms of the conformal factor as the fermion fields, and we use the resolvent technique to derive the renormalized entanglement entropy for massless Dirac fields in JT gravity.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; improvements to presentation, new content added in appendix to comment about the correlator trace formula of primary fermion fields, published version in CP

    Porcine congenital splayleg is characterised by muscle fibre atrophy associated with relative rise in MAFbx and fall in P311 expression

    <p>Background: Porcine congenital splayleg (PCS) is the most important congenital condition of piglets, associated with lameness and immobility, of unknown aetiology and pathogenesis, hence the need to better understand the condition by defining, in the first instance, its histopathology and molecular pathology.</p> <p>Results: Semitendinosus, longissimus dorsi, and gastrocnemius muscles were removed from 4 sets of 2-day-old splayleg piglets, each with a corresponding normal litter mate. Based on immunohistochemistry and histological image analysis, PCS piglets showed significantly smaller fibre size without any accompanying sign of inflammation. Although there was no dramatic change in fibre type composition in affected muscles, several structural myosin heavy chain genes were significantly down-regulated. MAFbx, a major atrophy marker, was highly up-regulated in nearly all PCS muscles, in comparison with controls from normal litter mates. In contrast, P311, a novel 8 kDa protein, was relatively down-regulated in all the PCS muscles. To investigate a functional role of P311 in skeletal muscle, its full-length cDNA was over-expressed in murine C2C12 muscle cells, which resulted in enhanced cell proliferation with reduced myotube formation. Hence, reduced P311 expression in PCS piglets might contribute to atrophy through reduced muscle cell proliferation. P311, predictably, was down-regulated by the over-expression of calcineurin, a key signalling factor of muscle differentiation.</p> <p>Conclusion: We demonstrated that PCS is a condition characterised by extensive fibre atrophy and raised fibre density, and propose that the combined differential expression of MAFbx and P311 is of potential in the diagnosis of subclinical PCS.</p&gt
