    Poe's biopics : representations of the author in D.W. Griffith's Edgar Allen Poe and James Mcteigue's The raven

    Literary biopics often reinforce romantic images regarding the creative process, emphasizing biographic and author-centered approaches to literature previously denounced by Roland Barthes (1977). Curiously, one of the most famous critics of such romantic conceptions, Edgar Allan Poe, has himself been a victim of this very same treatment, his literary production being taken as part and result of his controversial biography in a number of works. This article analyzes two biographical films, or biopics, about the renowned poet, D.W. Griffith’s Edgar Allen Poe (sic) (1909) and James McTeigue’s The Raven (2012). The analysis of these works indicates that both reinforce the merge of the artist’s life and oeuvre, as well as the blurring of borders between fact and fiction, author and character, high and mass culture, thus contributing to the characterization of the biopic as a fitting example of historiographic metafiction. (Hutcheon, 1988).Cinebiografias literárias frequentemente reforçam visões românticas quanto ao fazer artístico, reiterando a visão biografista e a centralidade do autor há muito denunciadas por Roland Barthes (1977). Curiosamente, um dos mais célebres críticos de tais concepções românticas, Edgar Allan Poe, viu-se vítima desse mesmo tratamento ao ter sua produção literária apropriada como parte e reflexo de sua controversa biografia em diversas obras. O presente artigo debruça-se sobre dois filmes biográficos, ou biopics, acerca do célebre poeta, Edgar Allen Poe (sic), de D.W. Griffith (1909), e O Corvo, de James McTeigue (2012). A análise das obras aponta que ambas reiteram a fusão entre vida e obrado artista, bem como o apagamento das fronteiras entre fato histórico e ficção, entre autor e personagem, alta cultura e cultura de massa, contribuindo para a caracterização do gênero biopic como um dos mais bem-acabados exemplos de metaficção historiográfica (Hutcheon, 1988)

    The Business Intelligence as a Service in the Cloud

    Limitations imposed by the traditional practice in financial institutions of running risk analysis on the desktop mean many rely on models which assume a “normal” Gaussian distribution of events which can seriously underestimate the real risk. In this paper, we propose an alternative service which uses the elastic capacities of Cloud Computing to escape the limitations of the desktop and produce accurate results more rapidly.The Business Intelligence as a Service (BIaaS) in the Cloud has a dual-service approach to compute risk and pricing for financial analysis. The first type of BIaaS service uses three APIs to simulate the Heston Model to compute the risks and asset prices, and computes the volatility (unsystematic risks) and the implied volatility (systematic risks) which can be tracked down at any time. The second type of BIaaS service uses two APIs to provide business analytics for stock market analysis, and compute results in the visualised format, so that stake holders without prior knowledge can understand. A full case study with two sets of experiments is presented to support the validity and originality of BIaaS. Additional three examples are used to support accuracy of the predicted stock index movement as a result of the use of the Heston Model and its associated APIs.We describe the architecture of deployment, together with examples and results which show how our approach improves risk and investment analysis and maintaining accuracy and efficiency whilst improving performance over desktops

The wavelength, pulse duration, and long-term stability of the laser make it eminently suitable as a front-end oscillator of a high-power, chirped-pulse amplifier experiment based on 1.053-µm amplification in Nd:phosphate glass

    Facial expression recognition (FER) has been dramatically developed in recent years, thanks to the advancements in related fields, especially machine learning, image processing and human recognition. Accordingly, the impact and potential usage of automatic FER have been growing in a wide range of applications, including human-computer interaction, robot control and driver state surveillance. However, to date, robust recognition of facial expressions from images and videos is still a challenging task due to the difficulty in accurately extracting the useful emotional features. These features are often represented in different forms, such as static, dynamic, point-based geometric or region-based appearance. Facial movement features, which include feature position and shape changes, are generally caused by the movements of facial elements and muscles during the course of emotional expression. The facial elements, especially key elements, will constantly change their positions when subjects are expressing emotions. As a consequence, the same feature in different images usually has different positions. In some cases, the shape of the feature may also be distorted due to the subtle facial muscle movements. Therefore, for any feature representing a certain emotion, the geometric-based position and appearance-based shape normally changes from one image to another image in image databases, as well as in videos. This kind of movement features represents a rich pool of both static and dynamic characteristics of expressions, which playa critical role for FER. The vast majority of the past work on FER does not take the dynamics of facial expressions into account. Some efforts have been made on capturing and utilizing facial movement features, and almost all of them are static based. These efforts try to adopt either geometric features of the tracked facial points, or appearance difference between holistic facial regions in consequent frames or texture and motion changes in loca- facial regions. Although achieved promising results, these approaches often require accurate location and tracking of facial points, which remains problematic

    Taking a New Contour: A Novel Approach to Panel Unit Root Tests

    The paper introduces a novel approach to testing for unit roots in panels. Following Chang and Park (2004), the approach takes a new contour that is drawn along the line given by the equi-squared-sum instead of the traditional one given by the equi-sample-size. As we show in the paper, the distributions of the unit root tests based on nonlinear IV t-ratios (which includes the Dickey-Fuller test as a special case) are asymptotically normal along the new contour. The normal asymptotics hold under both the null of a unit root and the local-to-unity alternative. Moreover, they are applicable also for the models with intercept, as long as is used the demeaning method relying only on the past information. Subsequently, we demonstrate that this startling finding may be exploited to invent tools and methodologies for the effective inferences in panel unit root models. In particular, our theory implies that the individual tests may be regarded asymptotically as normal samples if they are computed using the samples having the same sum of squares across all cross-sectional units, which may be obtained through the standard bootstrap method. Consequently, we may conveniently use various functionals of the individual tests to do valid inferences in panels.
