Mutations in the MCFD2 gene are predominant among patients with hereditary combined FV and FVIII deficiency (F5F8D) in India
No full textCombined FV and FVIII deficiency (F5F8D) is a rare (1:1.000.000) autosomal recessive disorder caused by a defect in the LMAN1 or MCFD2 genes, encoding for a FV and FVIII cargo receptor complex. We report the phenotype and genotype analyses in nine unrelated Indian patients with low FV and FVIII coagulant activity [FV:C, range: 5.6-22.4% and FVIII:C, range: 8.3-27.1%]. Four homozygous mutations, including two frame shift, one missense and one splice site, were identified in all the nine patients. Three of them, a 72-bp deletion in LMAN1 (c.813_822 + 62del72, p.K272fs), a 35-bp deletion in MCFD2 (c.210_244del35) and a missence mutation in MCFD2 (p.D122V), identified in four patients, were novel mutations. A previously reported c.149 + 5G > A transition in MCFD2 was identified in the remaining five patients. Haplotype analysis of MCFD2 gene in patients with p.E71fs and c.149 + 5G > A defects suggested an independent origin of both these mutations. The identification of two common mutations (p.E71fs, c.149 + 5G > A) in MCFD2 gene in seven of nine patients, particularly the c.149 + 5G > A (55,6% of patients), suggests that this gene could be the first to be analysed during the genetic diagnosis of F5F8D in this population. This is the first report describing the molecular analysis of a consistent number of F5F8D patients of South Indian origin, a population with a high frequency of such recessive bleeding disorder

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Mitogen induction of ion channels in murine T lymphocytes.
No full textUsing gigohm-seal recording, we studied ion channel expression in resting and activated T lymphocytes from mice. Both the number of channels per cell and the predominant type of K+ channel depend upon the state of activation of the cell. Unstimulated T cells express small numbers of K+ channels, typically a dozen per cell, and are heterogeneous, usually expressing either type n or type l K+ channels (see DeCoursey, T. E., K. G. Chandy, S. Gupta, and M. D. Cahalan. 1987. Journal of General Physiology. 89:379-404). 1 d after stimulation by the murine T cell mitogen concanavalin A, large numbers of type n K+ channels appear in enlarged, activated cells. Type n channels appear in activated cells with a time course consistent with that reported for mitogen-induced enhancement of protein synthesis. Voltage-gated tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na+ channels present in about one-third of unstimulated cells from the MRL-n strain are increased approximately 10-fold after activation
Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
No full textFollowing an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
Balancing pairs of interfering elements
No full textMany decisions in different fields of application have to take into account the joined effects of two elements that can interfere with each other. For example, in Industrial Economics the demand of an asset can be influenced by the supply of another asset, with synergic or antagonistic effects. The same happens in Public Economics, where two differing economic policies can create mutual interference. Analogously in Medicine and Life Sciences with drugs whose combined administration can produce extra damages or synergies. Other examples occur in Agriculture, Zootechnics and so on. When it is necessary to intervene in such elements, there is sometimes a primary interest for one effect rather than another. For example, if the importance of the effect of an element is ten times greater than the importance of the effect of another, then it is convenient to take this importance into consideration in deciding to what extent it should be employed. With this in mind, the model proposed here allows the optimal quantities of two elements that interfere with each other to be calculated, taking into account the minimum quantities to be allocated. Algorithms for determining solutions for continuous effects' functions are given, together with software specifically for the case of bilinear functions. An Examination of the Globalisation of Authorship in Publishing in 20 Leading Marketing Journals
No full textPurpose of this paper is to examine the global contribution of academics to marketing literature between 1999 and 2003, based on an examination of the location of academics institution of employment, as reported in published works. The data is used to evaluate the global dispersion of publishing.\ud
Design/approach. The paper uses the method of content analysis where the authorship of all articles in 20 leading marketing journals between 1999 and 2003 is examined. An empirical examination of performance was undertaken across geographic regions. There was also an examination of whether the quality of journal affected regional performance.\ud
Findings. The research found that there is a significant "bias" of authorship within the 20 journals examined, with the majority of works published by academics at institutions in North America. There is some variation in regional performance based on the type of journal examined. Limitations. There was no attempt to empirically examine why differences might exist. The study only focused on a sample of 20 English language journals over 5 years. These journals have been included in studies that list the leading marketing journal for US and European academics. Practical Implications. The research suggests that there may in fact be regional differences in publishing behaviour. It is unclear if these differences relate to variations in the "objectives" of institutions within each country or other factors, such as the North American publish-or-perish mentality. The research posits that a marketing knowledge may be unnecessarily restricted, if there is a bias against non-North American perspectives. Originality. While there have been other works examining research performance of institutions, there has been limited examination in marketing on the nation in which authors work and none have used a broad cross-section of journals.
