The imagination of land and the reality of seizure
This article analyses the political implications of Zimbabwe's land seizures of the early 2000s, and the manner in which land has been imagined in creative literatur
Video Analysis for Content-Based Applications
The analysis of video for semantics presents significant advantages for many content-based applications. An indicator of this is the recent trend towards the extraction of video semantics in the video processing community. Techniques for the extraction of semantics are varied and often application specific. Efficient interaction and interpretation of video is only as good as the underlying video content representation. This thesis is concerned with the development of video analysis techniques which support the extraction of semantics such as object and event identify from video. A new methodology for video analysis in which video is processed for high-level content through a hierarchy of visual analysis modules is proposed. Each module is constrained by a context which improves the performance of visual recognition. The design, implementation and testing of the new methodology resulted in a video analysis platform called The VCR System (The Video Content Recognition System). This thesis proposes a novel way to generate and handle video-objects, which is a step towards overcoming some of the problems in current machine vision. Problems in the manipulation of temporal data such as moving objects in video are examined. The problems include temporal correspondence of objects from one frame to the next, object occlusion, and false-positive object detections. The VCR System contains algorithms which will link objects in a generic way, suppress false detection of objects, and predict missing objects (either due to occlusion or missed detections). The contributions to the area of video analysis are demonstrated and evaluated by developing the VCR System to locate faces in video. A further more substantial demonstration is presented by analysing videos of snooker.</p
Stories of Priam and Job, the Slaughter of Their Families, and Twenty Theses on the Suggestiveness of Good for the Person of IR
There is in IR a concern for truth, justice and good. These, however, tend to be argued as abstract principles or, at least, as abstracted ones, removed from any ‘real’ world. IR has become, as many sought, a tributary of a German ideal philosophy. There is not, however, much expressed concern for the true person, the good man or woman. If, however, we imagined a rigorous praxis, so that the person of IR became also a person of truth, of justice and of good, what sort of person would that be? In what way may such a person be imagined? This essay offers suggestive answers to these questions
Introduction: The space of many voices - Zimbabwe since the Unity Government
This is a co-authored introduction to a journal special issue
Postscript: Making do in hybrid house
This is a critical analysis of a recent Zimbabwean novel, which also serves as a final framing/summing up of the themes and issues raised in the journal special issue on Zimbabwe since the Unity Government
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
