Tiene una gran variedad y cantidad de muros decorados con altorrelieves. Estos fueron hechos con moldes y decoraron las paredes de patios, audiencias y corredores, al interior de las ciudadelas. Los motivos decorativos más comunes fueron las combinaciones geométricas, pero también son comunes las representaciones de peces y aves. El núcleo de Chan Chan está formado por 10 "ciudadelas", llamadas así por ser grandes recintos cercados ("canchones"), en cuyo interior albergan muchas estructuras menores, asemejando pequeñas ciudades amuralladas, de los cuales 9 tienen muchas características comunes. Vistos desde el norte y el sentido de las agujas del reloj han sido bautizadas como Squier, Gran Chimú, Bandelier, Uhle, Chayhuac, Tschudi, Rivero, Laberinto, Tello y Velarde. Chan Chan se ubica en el valle de Moche, frente al mar, a mitad de camino entre el balneario de Huanchaco y la ciudad de Trujillo, capital del departamento de La Libertad en la costa norte del Perú. El sitio arqueológico cubre un área aproximada de 20 kilómetros cuadrados. La zona central esta formada por un conjunto de 10 recintos amurallados (llamados "ciudadelas") y otras pirámides solitarias. Este conjunto central, cubre un área de 6 kilómetros cuadrados, aproximadamente. El resto, está formado por una multitud de pequeñas estructuras mal conservadas, veredas, canales, murallas y cementerios.
