Dutch Diagnostic Instrument for Mild Aphasia (DIMA): standardisation and a first clinical application in two brain tumour patients

    No full text
Brain tumour patients with mild language disturbances are typically underdiagnosed due to lack of sensitive tests leading to negative effects in daily communicative and social life. We aim to develop a Dutch standardised test-battery, the Diagnostic Instrument for Mild Aphasia (DIMA) to detect characteristics of mild aphasia at the main linguistic levels phonology, semantics and (morpho-)syntax in production and comprehension. We designed 4 DIMA subtests: 1) repetition (words, non-words, compounds and sentences), 2) semantic odd-picture-out (objects and actions), 3) sentence completion and 4) sentence judgment (accuracy and reaction time). A normative study was carried out in a healthy Dutch-speaking population (N = 211) divided into groups of gender, age and education. Clinical application of DIMA was demonstrated in two brain tumour patients (glioma and meningioma). Standard language tests were also administered: object naming, verbal fluency (category and letter), and Token Test. Performance was at ceiling on all sub-tests, except semantic odd-picture-out actions, with an effect of age and education on most subtests. Clinical application DIMA: repetition was impaired in both cases. Reaction time in the sentence judgment test (phonology and syntax) was impaired (not accuracy) in one patient. Standard language tests: category fluency was impaired in both cases and object naming in one patient. The Token Test was not able to detect language disturbances in both cases. DIMA seems to be sensitive to capture mild aphasic deficits. DIMA is expected to be of great potential for standard assessment of language functions in patients with also other neurological diseases than brain tumours.sponsorship: The author Roelien Bastiaanse was partially supported by the Center for Language and Brain NRU Higher School of Economics, RF Government grant, ag.. 14.641.31.0004. Diagnostic techniques for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis: a review

    No full text
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is a group of the bovine respiratory disease multifaceted pathogens and a key disease of cattle, leading to significant economic losses to the dairy industry globally. The causative agent of IBR is Bovine herpesvirus type-1 (BoHV-1), which is a member of the genus Varicellovirus in the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily, which belongs to the family Herpesviridae, order Herpesvirales. BoHV-1 can be categorized into three subtypes (BoHV-1.1, BoHV-1.2a, and BoHV-1.2b) that belong to one single viral species, which is a serologically indistinguishable strain. Therefore, a more optimal method for the rapid diagnosis of BoHV-1 infection is highly needed. Hence, the objective of this paper is to review the appropriate diagnostic techniques for the IBR virus in infected cattle. In this review, various rapid and confirmatory diagnostic methods used for the diagnosis of BoHV-1 infection were briefly described. BoHV-1 can be routinely detected by virus neutralization tests and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (indirect or blocking ELISA). IBRgE-ELISA is the most specific serological test for BoHV-1 and is recommended for marker vaccine to differentiate wild infection from vaccination schemes. Furthermore, virus isolation from tissue or swab samples by cell culture and DNA detection with LAMP, PCR, and real-time PCR techniques are all used to detect infected cattle. Direct sequencing of the entire genome using the Sanger sequencing method recently allowed for the differentiation of BoHV-1 subspecies and the distinction of the BoHV-1 field strain from vaccine strains based on single nucleotide polymorphisms. As the gold standard diagnosis for IBR is virus isolation in cell culture, commonly followed by BoHV-1 gene sequencing, it is also recommended

The Brandenburg Gates : unity, division, and reinvented tradition in post-wall Berlin

Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2013.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 96-98).Twenty three years after the German Reunification (German: Deutsche Wiedervereinigung), the once divided Berlin is still undergoing a process of recovery from the deep political, social, cultural, and physical divisions of the 20th century. Such divisions seem to have manifested themselves in every corner of the city throughout the course of history, creating a highly politicized environment, and hotly contested spaces decades after conflict ended. One particular area of controversy lies in the center of the city, along the former path of the Berlin Wall. This part of the city was heavily destroyed after the Second World War. Despite some unsuccessful reconstruction efforts after the War, the Berlin Wall passed right through the center of the city, wiping out the few buildings that were left standing, leaving the area completely barren and deserted. This area of the city came to be known as the 'death strip' (German: Todesstreifen), characterized by a long wide empty space, a wall on the west, barbed wire on the east, and occasional checkpoints and military units along the way. Over the last twenty three years, the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment (German: Berlin Stadtentwicklung) has sought to restore, preserve, rebuild, and develop large parts of the city, including the former death strip. Its goal has been to physically reconnect fragmented parts the city, by creating spaces that serve as meeting points for former East and West Berliners, in order to reintegrate the city's physical landscape and recreate its cultural identity. One of the Senate's key development projects focused on the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's iconic landmark, and its surrounding public spaces, for the political, cultural, and historic symbolism they represent to the city. This thesis will first examine the conditions under which the Brandenburg Gate has served as a symbol of unity and division in the city throughout its evolving history. Then, it will discuss the Brandenburg Gate and its surrounding spaces as a network of reinvented traditions, with the Gate serving as passageway to the physical and temporal histories to the city-hence, the Brandenburg Gates.by Dima Ayyash.M.C.P

Serological detection of Newcastle disease virus in backyard poultry production system in Woliso District South West Shewa, Central Ethiopia

Abstract Background Newcastle disease (ND) is one of the most important respiratory viral diseases. The disease is endemic in many parts of Ethiopia. However, there is no clear record about the introduction of the virus to the country (Ethiopia). Hence, detail about the ND is very important in its (ND) control and prevention. Despite these facts, there is no available research work done on ND in the current research area that would help either as references for researchers or that could help in the control and prevention of the disease. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect the ND virus (NDV), using serological methods in from December 2018 to November 2019. Methodology A cross‐sectional type of study was conducted to detect the NDV. The convenience sampling method was used for sample data collection. Before data collection, chicken with previous history of vaccination against the NDV was excluded from the sampling animals. Then, a total of 348 blood samples of 2 mL were collected from the brachial vein in 3 mL disposable syringes. The serum was collected in labeled 2 mL cryovial tubes. Indirect enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests were performed to detect antibodies against NDV and to determine its antibody titer. The test was performed using (ID.vet innovative version 2) procedure. Result In the indirect ELISA test, 37.64% (131/348) were positive and antibody titer mean value of (1761.9088) was scored. The standard deviation of 2592.42160 and a percentage coefficient of variation of 147% was scored. Conclusion From the finding, we conclude that indirect ELISA test detected the presence of the NDV in the study area and the heterogeneousity of antibody titer in the study area. Therefore, further molecular characterization and epidemiological investigation should be carried and vaccination of animals is critical in the study area

Contribuţii privitoare la viaţa şi activitatea lui Ienăchiţă Văcărescu

In the paper the author deals with some unclear or even unknown aspects connected with the activity of the great Romanian scholar Ienăchiţă Văcărescu: 1. As a result of the linguistic and stylistic comparison between the texts known to belong to Văcărescu and the Pravilniceasca Condică, law code published in 1780 at the request of prince Alexandru Ipsilante, she has reached the conclusion that the text in Romanian is the work of Ienăchiţă Văcărescu. 2. The same contrastive method used on the available texts, especially the translation of the Hatişeriful Sultanului Selim, of 1791, allowed the author to establish, based on linguistic and textological similarities, the paternity of Ienăchiţă Văcărescu on the Romanian translation of the Hatişeriful Sultanului Hamid, of 1774. 3. Starting from previous researches connected to the Wallachian version of the Erotokritos by Vincenzo Cornaros, the author considers that the poem [Într-un copaci zarifior], attributed to Ienăchiţă, is extracted from the translation of the Erotokritos by Alecu Văcărescu and therefore the verses belong to his son. The motif of the falk caught in love’s chains is to be found in the Greek original and in the Moldavian version of its translation. 4. Citing a credible document, the author proves that the exact date of death of the great scholar is the 11th July 1797. 5. The annex at the end of the paper includes the edited text of the two Hatişerifuri, translated by Ienăchiţă Văcărescu, followed by an index of less known words
