    No full text
The documentary film, History Made for Tomorrow: Hakka Tulou was an October 2010 release by History Channel International. This film is an in-depth study on the green building techniques and sustainable lifestyle of the Hakka people of Southern China with a focus on the ancient Tulou rammed earth structures. The television program follows West Virginia University research professor, Ruifeng Liang, as he initiates scientific studies to back claims that the rammed earth Tulou structures are “the greenest buildings in the world”, and Canadian architect, Jorg Ostrowski, of Autonomous Sustainable Housing Inc., who has been researching the ecological footprint of Hakka communities since August 2007, to promote them as “eco-villages” of best practices for planet Earth’s sustainability. The author is credited as Director, Writer, and Producer of this film. This paper is based on the script of the production

VAT OF THE LEXICAL TONES IN MANDARIN CHINESE

    No full text
The purpose of this research was to investigate the association of vocal attack time (VAT) and tones in speakers of Mandarin Chinese, and to explore how tones initiated at different pitch levels affected VAT. SP and EGG signals were synchronously recorded from 72 young undergraduates or postgraduates (42 females and 30 males) while they were reading aloud a wordlist of 50 disyllabic words at their most comfortable pitch, loudness and rate. VAT measures revealed three findings. (1) Vocal attack time shows no significant difference between the common yangping and the yangping derived from shangsheng. This, from a physiological perspective, supports the argument that the tone sequence 3-3 in Mandarin is indeed converted into 2-3, nothing else. (2) The tones of Mandarin Chinese that start from low pitch levels (35, 21) tend to present significantly different VAT values from those that start from high pitch levels (55, 51), with mean VATs of the former being much longer than those of the latter. This embodies the nonlinear contra-variant relationship between VAT and F0 at vowel onsets. (3) There are deviations or individual differences: a small number of people do not follow this pattern.National Social Sciences Foundation of China; [10ZD125]A&HCISSCIARTICLE2275-2894

Experimental Study on the Impact of NaCl Concentration on the Flocculating Settling of Fine Sediment in Static Water

    No full text
AbstractNaCl concentration can increase the flocculation of the fine-grained sediments in suspension. However, the impact of NaCl concentration on the process of flocculation and settling is unclear. This paper investigated the effect of NaCl concentration on the settling velocity of fine sediments, which kaolin is the constituent mineral of the sediment sample (D10=0.9μm; D50=2.7μm; D90=10.3μm). The experiments were conducted in a 1.2 meter high settling column. Experimental cases were set for different initial concentration of sediment (0.2, 0.5, 1.0 g·l-1) and different NaCl concentration (0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 g·l-1). With respect to each case, water samples were collected and measured at 11 different times from 0min to 300min during the process of experiment. Settling velocities were calculated based on the time evolution of suspended sediment concentrations. The experimental results show the time evolution of the relative sediment concentration, which is the ratio of the concentration to the initial concentration, follows a hyperbolic dynamic model under the low initial sediment concentration conditions. The settling velocity increases with the NaCl concentration and sediment concentration. An empirical formula among the settling velocity of sediment, salinity and sediment concentration have been established by means of the multiple linear regression analysis

    Handle additions producing essential surfaces

    No full text
We construct a small, hyperbolic 3-manifold M with the property that, for any integer g >= 2, there are infinitely many separating slopes r in partial derivative M such that the 3-manifold M(r) obtained by attaching a 2-handle to M along r contains an essential separating closed surface of genus g. The resulting manifolds M( r) are still hyperbolic. This contrasts sharply with known finiteness results on Dehn filling and with the known finiteness result on handle addition for the cases g = 0, 1. Our 3-manifold M is the complement of a hyperbolic, small knot in a handlebody of genus 3.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000251563100011&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701MathematicsSCI(E)3ARTICLE1233-25522

    No full text
The development of compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology can ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system, promote the consumption of renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. In order to improve the comprehensive performance of the CAES system and meet the diversified demand of energy, a cooling, heating and power cogeneration system based on compressed air energy storage with high temperature thermal energy storage and ammonia absorption refrigeration are developed in this study. The compression heat of the energy storage process and the exhaust waste heat of the energy release process are fully utilized in this system. Thermodynamic analysis, techno-economic evaluation and parametric analysis are conducted. The thermodynamic analysis results show that the proposed system achieve an ENE of 81.51 %, an EXE of 53.51% and an ESD of 7.08 kWh/m3 under the design condition. The economic analysis results indicate that the NPV, IRR and LCOE for a system life of 25 years are 489497 ,32.1, 32.1 % and 0.0953 /kWh, with a DPP of 3.91 years. Sensitivity analysis results conclude that the outlet temperature of HTTES, and the maximum and minimum operating pressures are the key parameters affecting the system performance

This thesis focuses on the problem of optimal location querying for location based services in road networks. The existing optimal solutions on this problem consider only the query for one new server. When two or more new servers are to be set up, the problem with minmax and maxsum cost criteria, MinMax and MaxSum, becomes NP-hard. Here we extend the work to handle the problem with multiple new servers. We propose algorithms for three variations of the problem: MinMax, MaxSum and BoundedMax. We also study the optimal meeting point query. We derive a novel algorithm for MinMax, and show that it is efficient when the number of new servers is small. When the number of new servers is large, we propose an efficient 3-approximate algorithm. We propose efficient algorithm for Maxsum and BoundedMax problem. For optimal meeting point query, we derive a new algorithm with smaller index size and comparable rumtime.Liu, Ruifeng.Thesis M.Phil. A hybrid escalating evolutionary algorithm for multi-objective flow-shop scheduling

    No full text
A hybrid escalating evolutionary algorithm, which aims at solving multi-objective flow-shop scheduling problems, is proposed in this paper The new algorithm takes an escalating evolutionary structure, which helps it escaping from premature, and an elitism strategy is introduced to improve its convergence, besides, a problem-dependent meta-heuristic variable local search strategy is adopted to enhance its local search ability. To assess the performance and demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm, a series of standard bi-objective test problems and a typical tri-objective case study are employed Empirical results have shown that, our new algorithm has outperformed some well-known algorithms like NSGA-II, ENGA and MOGLS.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000250427900078&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Automation & Control SystemsComputer Science, Artificial IntelligenceComputer Science, Software EngineeringCPCI-S(ISTP)
