Maternal smoking: Determinants and associated morbidity in two areas in Lebanon
Objectives: This study assessed the factors related to smoking during pregnancy in two areas in Lebanon, and the association of smoking to selected maternal and newborn health related factors. Methods: This wasa secondary analysis of data on 538 women who delivered in nine hospitals in two areas in Lebanon. Women were interviewed about their smoking practices, and on demographic and psychosocial variables. 396 women were followed up and re-interviewed about their smoking status, and the mother's and baby's health after delivery. Smoking during pregnancy included both cigarettes and narghile smoking. Results: About 25.7percent of women were smoking some kind of tobacco during pregnancy. Older women, Muslim women, women with poor education, those who had financial difficulty, nervousness, lower support, and delay in seeking prenatal care were more likely to smoke during pregnancy. Women who smoked during pregnancy were more likely to have a low birth weight baby and to stop breastfeeding. Conclusions: It is important to address smoking among women in general, and not only during pregnancy. Coping and disability: Evidence from a developing country
Aim: In view of the increasing burden of musculoskeletal-related disability, the growing number of older persons and the scarcity of research on musculoskeletal conditions in the Eastern Mediterranean region, coping with musculoskeletal problems deserves special attention. This paper examines how good coping links to musculoskeletal-related disability among Lebanese citizens aged 15years and older. Methods: The sample included 200 people living in southern Lebanon and who participated in the Community Oriented Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) survey. Disability and coping were assessed using self-reported questions. Covariates included demographics, musculoskeletal pain variables, and body mass index (BMI). Results: Around one-third of the sample had lifetime functional disability due to musculoskeletal problems and 62percent were coping well with their problems. Adjusted data showed that the odds of musculoskeletal-related disability among individuals who were not coping well was 2.35 times the odds of disability among individuals who were coping well with 95percent CI=1.10-5.02. Conclusion: This study provides evidence of the importance of complementing pharmacological treatment with a cognitive-behavioral approach for management of musculoskeletal problems. © 2011 The Authors. Detainment and health: The case of the Lebanese hostages of war
The purpose of the current research was to compare former detainees of Khiam prison to a comparison group regarding depression, anxiety, presence of chronic diseases, smoking, and alcohol drinking. The sample consisted of 118 ex-detainees and 90 community controls. The Beck Depression Inventory, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, the Clinician-Administered Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale, and the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire were used. The ex-detainees suffered from an increased level of depression, high anxiety scores, increased chronic diseases, smoked more, and consumed more alcohol than their comparison group. Regression analyses showed that detainment independently predicted depression and anxiety. © 2010 The Authors. Gender differences in physical disability among older adults in underprivileged communities in Lebanon
Objective: To examine the role of health conditions, socioeconomic, and socioenvironmental factors in explaining gender differences in physical disability among older adults. Method: We compared 412 women and 328 men residing in underprivileged communities in Lebanon on their activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and physical tasks (PT). Binary logistic regression analyses adjusting for possible explanatory covariates were conducted sequentially. Results: Women showed higher prevalence rates of ADL, IADL, and PT compared to men. Gender disparities in ADL disability were explained by chronic-disease risk factors and health conditions (OR = 1.46; 95percent CI = 0.94-2.25). The odds of disability in IADL and PT remained significantly higher for women compared to men after accounting for all available covariates. Individual and collective determinants of mental health during wartime. A survey of displaced populations amidst the July–August 2006 war in Lebanon
It is well known that war has negative effects on the mental health of civilian populations. However, different perceptions and reactions to trauma have different impacts on the psychological well-being of affected populations. This study assessed the mental health status of adult internally displaced persons (IDPs) at an early stage of the summer 2006 war in Lebanon, and investigated the relationship between their mental status and socio-demographic determinants, and individual and collective experiences of the war. Two hundred and eighteen IDPs were surveyed for the prevalence and determinants of acute trauma symptoms. The reporting of anxiety symptoms was assessed using a version of the Hamilton Anxiety Rate Scale that was translated into Arabic. The prevalence of self-reported anxiety symptoms was relatively low, at 25.8percent. After adjustment, the outcome variable was significantly associated with being female (OR=2.9), experiencing bombing while fleeing (OR=2.8) and being surveyed in days of bad political news (OR=2.7). Factors related to displacement circumstances and coping strategies showed no significance. This result suggests that individual and collective war experience had an equal importance in predicting anxiety. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Risk factors for incident symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: A population-based case control study in Lebanon
Objectives: To identify risk factors for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) and explain the geographical disparities in its occurrence. Methods: A population-based case control study used data from a national Community Oriented Program for the Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) study conducted in Lebanon in 2009. The sample included 59 incident cases of symptomatic knee OA with no past knee injury, knee pain for a period of 12 months, and were examined by rheumatologists. One hundred and eighteen randomly sampled population-based controls were frequency matched with cases by age and gender. Results: Obesity, overweight and area of residence were significant risk factors for knee OA, after adjusting for type of job, monthly income and family history of joint problems. Conclusion: Determinants of symptomatic knee OA in Lebanon may differ by geographical location, potentially reflecting differences in social conditions, biological elements and environmental factors. The geographical differences remained significant even after accounting for investigated factors.
