A Feasibility Study for the Development of a Vertical Shaft Construction Technique using Ring Cutting
No full textSupply facilities have to be buried due to urban development from rapid
population growth and a lack of land; therefore, vertical shaft construction has
increased for utility tunnels. Because utility tunnels are installed in urban areas, there
can be critical problems from faulty construction. Conventional construction methods
used in most vertical shafts cause a decrease in the groundwater level which is one
reason for ground settlement. Therefore, construction methods have been researched
that take into consideration the ground settlement of vertical shafts, and the ring cut
method was developed. This method first penetrates an outer section of the shaft to
prevent soil inflow and extends the seepage line. Using this method, ground settlement
caused by construction is expected to decrease. This study performed 2-dimensional
stress-seepage coupled numerical feasibility tests to analyze the effective penetration
depth of the ring cut method. Settlement and seepage were measured to evaluate its
performance. The obtained data will be used to optimize the newly developed method

News comment sections and online echo chambers: The ideological alignment between partisan news stories and their user comments
No full text© The Author(s) 2022.This study explored the presence of digital echo chambers in the realm of partisan media’s news comment sections in South Korea. We analyzed the political slant of 152 K user comments written by 76 K unique contributors on NAVER, the country’s most popular news aggregator. We found that the political slant of the average user comments to be in alignment with the political leaning of the conservative news outlets; however, this was not true of the progressive media. A considerable number of comment contributors made a crossover from like-minded to cross-cutting partisan media and argued with their political opponents. The majority of these crossover commenters were “headstrong ideologues,” followed by “flip-floppers” and “opponents.” The implications of the present study are discussed in light of the potential for the news comment sections to be the digital cafés of Public Sphere 2.0 rather than echo chambers.11Nssciscopu

The secret to successful evocative messages: Anger takes the lead in information sharing over anxiety
No full textWe conducted two studies to compare how anxiety and anger influence the online spread of information. Study 1 found that tweets expressing anger reached more people and had deeper retweet chains than tweets expressing anxiety, across all measures of retweet cascades (i.e., size, depth, maximum breadth, and structural virality). Study 2 used an online survey and confirmed anger’s supremacy in information sharing. Individuals who were angry indicated a higher intention to share emotional tweets of both anger and anxiety, whereas those who felt anxious only shared tweets of the corresponding affect. Also, individuals who were experiencing both emotions showed the highest intention to share. The implications are discussed in light of co-existing emotions and their direct and interaction effects. © 2023 National Communication Association.11Nssciscopu
