Modified Ring specimens are of the shape of discs having a hole inside and flattened ends. These specimens are used for determination of Mode I fracture toughness. Finite element program, named ABAQUS, is used for numerical modeling for finding stress intensity factors. Varying disc geometries were used for the experiments and numerical modeling in which size of the flat ends, radius of the hole inside, and external radius of the specimen were varied. Experiments were done by using pink Ankara andesite. Effects of internal hole radius, external disc radius and size of the flat ends on both stress intensity factor and fracture toughness were studied. In order to compare the results, fracture tests with semi-circular specimens under three point bending (SCB) were also performed. From a similar previous study, fracture toughness values of gray andesite were recalculated and compared to the fracture toughness values of pink andesite for varying geometrical factors. Size effect studies were performed as well for varying diameter of core specimens.Fracture toughness values of andesite were found to increase with increasing specimen size. Fracture toughness of 100 mm specimens was determined as 1.11±0.07 MPa√m, whereas fracture toughness of 75 mm specimens was 0.96±0.08 MPa√m. 100 mm or larger diameter specimens were suggested for the fracture toughness determination with the modified ring tests

Krein Systems and Canonical Systems on a Finite Interval: Accelerants with a Jump Discontinuity at the Origin and Continuous Potentials

    No full text
This paper is devoted to connections between accelerants and potentials of Krein systems and of canonical systems of Dirac type, both on a finite interval. It is shown that a continuous potential is always generated by an accelerant, provided the latter is continuous with a possible jump discontinuity at the origin. Moreover, the generating accelerant is uniquely determined by the potential. The results are illustrated on pseudo-exponential potentials. The paper is a continuation of the earlier paper of the authors (Alpay et al. in Modern Analysis and Applications. The Mark Krein Centenary Conference, vol. 2, pp. 19-36, OT 191. Birkhäuser, Basel, 2009) dealing with the direct problem for Krein systems. © 2010 The Author(s)

    Regional unemployment in Turkey

    No full text
High unemployment rates are a concern for a country, existence of high regional unemployment differentials is another. Turkey has both. This paper using spatial and nonparametric techniques documents the wide regional unemployment disparities in Turkey from 1980 to 2000. Data indicate that the provincial unemployment rates are quite persistent and the gap across different regions widens even further with spatial clusters emerging across the country. The evidence indicates that human capital and demand deficiency are the sources of observed disparity across provinces. Furthermore, the sources of unemployment differentials have changed over time. Usability and acceptability of a website that provides tailored advice on falls prevention activities for older people

    No full text
This article presents the usability and acceptability of a website that provides older people with tailored advice to help motivate them to undertake physical activities that prevent falls. Views on the website from interviews with 16 older people and 26 sheltered housing wardens were analysed thematically. The website was well received with only one usability difficulty with the action plan calendar. The older people selected balance training activities out of interest or enjoyment, and appeared to carefully add them into their current routine. The wardens were motivated to promote the website to their residents, particularly those who owned a computer, had balance problems, or were physically active. However, the participants noted that currently a minority of older people use the Internet. Also, some older people underestimated how much activity was enough to improve balance, and others perceived themselves as too old for the activities

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2004Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2004Bu çalışmada, 20 katlı bir çelik toplu konut binasının statik hesabı yapılmıştır. In this study static calculation of a multistorey steel housing development building which has 20 storey has been made. Static calculations has been made according to both Eurocode-3 and TS-648 standarts. In the last chapter of the thesis an evaluation presents to compare the results obtained from both standarts. In static calculations the author benefitted from Etabs computer program and in drawings the author benefitted form Autocad computer program. At earthquake and wind analysis “Standart for Buildings Which will be Construct in Disaster Regions” standart has been used. At the appendix section 10 drawings and 2 discs include static calculation datums has been presented. As a result of the calculations it has been showned that the building ensured the requirements required for both standarts and has adequate resistance for earthquake and wind forces. The outcome of the camparison between Eurocode- 3 and TS-648 which has been presented at section 8; the Eurocode-3 standart offered a more complex and economic static design opportunity than TS-648 standart.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Çalışmada yazarın yayımlanmış hikâye kitaplarındaki bütün hikâyeleri anlatım teknikleri bakımından incelenerek kullandığı tekniklere uygun örnekler ortaya konulmuş ve hikâyeciliğinin özellikleri belirlenmiştirIn this stady, it is aimed to determine the characteristics of Ayşe Kilimci’s short story writing and the narration techniques in her stories. Kilimci’s biggets reality is sleeping and waking up with story, breating and thinking with story, looking at life from story window, reconstructing life with story. This reality has provided oppurtunity to happen considerable stories, coalescing with author’s that enthusiastic, epic narration. Narration techniques used in her stories have been shaped according to the theme that the author handled and wording frames.Having multidirectional, colored live wording, the author does not stand back to use a lot of naration techniques to increase expression oppurtunities. The author applies a lot of narration techniques in the same story both to provide to put forth the aimed factor with various views and to eliminate the uniform in narration. The richness of author’s stories in terms of themes and narrating thunderously have provided oppurtunity to use a lot of different narration techniques while occuring main elements. The author, applying classical and contemporary narration techniques in her stories successfully, has applied especially commenting, description, assemblying, staying, dialogue techniques with the effect of epic wording in her stories successfully. In this study, all stories in author’s published story books have been examined in the view of narration techniques , the suitable samples of author’s techniques have been put forth and characteristics of her short story writing have been determine

Point Evaluation and Hardy Space on a Homogeneous Tree

    No full text
We consider stationary multiscale systems as defined by Basseville, Benveniste, Nikoukhah and Willsky. We show that there are deep analogies with the discrete time non stationary setting as developed by the first author, Dewilde and Dym. Following these analogies we define a point evaluation with values in a C*–algebra and the corresponding “Hardy space” in which Cauchy’s formula holds. This point evaluation is used to define in this context the counterpart of classical notions such as Blaschke factors

Generalized Fock Spaces and the Stirling Numbers

The Bargmann-Fock-Segal space plays an important role in mathematical physics and has been extended into a number of directions. In the present paper, we imbed this space into a Gelfand triple. The spaces forming the Fréchet part (i.e., the space of test functions) of the triple are characterized both in a geometric way and in terms of the adjoint of multiplication by the complex variable, using the Stirling numbers of the second kind. The dual of the space of test functions has a topological algebra structure, of the kind introduced and studied by the first named author and Salomon

The relationship between urine heat shock protein 70 and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract: UTILISE study

    No full text
Background: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are defined as structural malformations of the kidney and/or urinary tract. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are expressed in the kidney in response to cellular changes, such as thermal, hemodynamic, osmotic, inflammatory, and mechanical stresses. This study aimed to assess uHSP70 levels during acute urinary tract infections (UTI) and non-infection periods in patients with CAKUT, and to evaluate whether uHSP70 is elevated in CAKUT subtypes. Methods: Among patients with CAKUT, 89 patients with UTI (CAKUT-A), 111 without UTI (CAKUT-B), and 74 healthy children were included in the study. uHSP70 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: uHSP70 level was significantly higher in the CAKUT-A group than in the CAKUT-B and healthy control groups (p 0.05). Conclusion: Urine HSP70 can also be used to predict UTI in patients with CAKUT. Moreover, uHSP70 levels were higher in children with CAKUT during the non-infectious period than in healthy controls. This suggests that children with CAKUT are at risk of chronic non-infectious damage.
