    Polycystic ovary syndrome in Latin American populations: What is known and what remains unresolved

    Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the main endocrine and reproductive disorders affecting women in their reproductive age. The syndrome is considered a multifactorial pathology. Therefore, genetic susceptibility and environmental factors contribute to PCOS development and phenotypic manifestation. Ethnicity and socioeconomic factors influence the development of PCOS and could affect the possibility of its diagnosis. Latin America is a unique case of study because of the heterogeneity within the region, complex socioeconomic status, and the mixed ancestry found in these populations. Up-to-date, most studies have focused on developed countries´ populations, and there is a lack of evidence regarding Latin-American countries. We propose to review the state of the art of PCOS knowledge regarding Latin American populations, including the metabolic and reproductive aspects of the syndrome and the different influencing factors, and suggest future directions to deepen the study of PCOS.Fil: Abruzzese, Giselle Adriana.     Viability and infectiousness of eggs of Echinococcus granulosus aged under natural conditions of inferior arid climate

    We studied the viability and infectiousness of aged Echinococcus granulosus eggs by in vivo evaluation in ovines. Our results demonstrated that after 41 months of ageing of the eggs under environmental conditions of an inferior arid climate (Patagonia, Argentina), they were still able to produce infection in 4/4 ovines challenged with 1200 eggs per ovine. In the ovines experimentally infected with these aged eggs, the occurrence of hepatic and pulmonary cysts was determined by necropsy, histologic and genetic studies. The eggs were found in a semi-senescent stage, thus keeping their capacity to generate an infection in the intermediary ovine host.Fil: Thevenet, Paula Sánchez.     Increased chemerin serum levels in hyperandrogenic and normoandrogenic women from Argentina with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Aim: To assess serum chemerin levels and investigate the association of chemerin with the hyperandrogenic and normoandrogenic phenotypes of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and with the metabolic status of the analyzed population. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 106 women with PCOS and 60 healthy controls from Argentina. Patients were classified as showing a hyperandrogenic or normoandrogenic phenotype. Participants underwent anthropometric and clinical evaluation and markers of cardiovascular risk, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome (MS), and serum chemerin levels were assessed. Results: PCOS patients showed increased levels of chemerin. In adjusted models for age and body mass index (BMI), chemerin was associated with markers of metabolic status. The analysis of chemerin levels considering the cutoff values of BMI, homeostatic model of insulin sensitivity (HOMA-IR) and TG/HDL marker showed that PCOS patients always presented higher levels of chemerin than controls. PCOS group showed increased chemerin levels independently of the presence of MS. Conclusion: PCOS patients always showed increased levels of chemerin independently of their phenotype and presence of overweight, as well as higher levels of chemerin than controls when considering the cutoff values of HOMA-IR and TG/HDL.     Association between β2-adrenoceptor (ADRB2) haplotypes and insulin resistance in PCOS

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore β2-adrenoceptor (ADRB2) haplotype associations with phenotypes and quantitative traits related to insulin resistance (IR) and the metabolic syndrome (MS) in a polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) population. A secondary purpose was to assess the association between ADRB2 haplotype and PCOS. DESIGN: Genetic polymorphism analysis. Cross-sectional case-control association study. SETTING: Medical University Hospital and research laboratory. PATIENTS: One hundred and sixty-five unrelated women with PCOS and 116 unrelated women without PCOS (control sample). MEASUREMENTS: Clinical and biochemical measurements, and ADRB2 genotyping in PCOS patients and control subjects. METHODS: ADRB2 haplotypes (comprising rs1042711, rs1801704, rs1042713 and rs1042714 in that order), genotyping and statistical analysis to evaluate associations with continuous variables and traits related to IR and MS in a PCOS population. Associations between ADRB2 haplotypes and PCOS were also assessed. RESULTS: We observed an age-adjusted association between ADRB2 haplotype CCGG and lower insulin (P = 0·018) and HOMA (P = 0·008) in the PCOS sample. Interestingly, the expected differences in surrogate measures of IR between cases and controls were not significant in CCGG/CCGG carriers. In the case-control study, genotype CCGG/CCGG was associated with a 14% decrease in PCOS risk (P = 0·043), taking into account confounding variables.     Chemerin gene variants association with metabolic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Objective: To evaluate Chemerin gene (RARRES2) SNVs rs4721 and rs17173608 association with clinical and biochemical characteristics, also with the metabolic and androgenic condition in women with Polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS).Materials and methods: We analyzed 107 women with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria (17-38 years). PCOS were divided into subgroups by the presence or absence of metabolicsyndrome (MS) and hyperandrogenism (HA). Peripheral blood genomic DNA was purified and genotyped by T-ARMS PCR (Tetraamplification refractory mutation system for rs 17173608 (RARRES2 NC_000007.14(NM_002889.4):c.280-494A>C) and PCR-RFLP for rs4721 (RARRES2 NM_002889.4):c.*13A>C). Statistical analyzes were performed with GraphPad Prism and SPSS (t-Student test,ANCOVA with p-values adjusted for age and χ2 analysis).Results: The PCOS patients showed a genotype distribution of TT genotype (44.9%), followed by TG genotype (43%) and GG (12.1%) for the rs4721; similar to the frequency found in Caucasians (Hap-MapProject). The population was in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium (x2= 0.147; p = 0.70). The rs17173608 could not be analyzed because of the low presence of the minor allele (4%). Through ANCOVA analysis age adjusted, it was shown that the presence of rs4721G allele was associated with higher levels of total cholesterol/HDL (p=0.04), LDL-c (p=0,02) triglycerides (p=0.03), insulin (p=0.02), HOMA (p=0.04), LAP index (Lipid accumulation product, p=0.03), testosterone (p= 0.08), LH/FSH (p=0.03). Also, rs4721 G allele was associated with larger telomere length (p=0.04) and lesser mitochondrial DNA mass (p=0.08).Conclusion: In women with PCOS, rs4721G allele was associated with worse metabolic and hormonal parameters. In this preliminary study, no association was found between SNV rs4721 Chemerin gene and susceptibility to MS and HA in women with PCOS.Fil: Velazquez, Mariela Edith.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Relationship between the IL-1β serum concentration, mRNA levels and rs16944 genotype in the hyperglycemic normalization of T2D patients

    To evaluate Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1β) serum and mononuclear leucocyte mRNA levels, also rs16944 (−511C/T) genotype, in relation to hyperglycemic normalization in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients, we recruited 30 individuals recently T2D diagnosed with hyperglycemia studied at basal time and after 6 and 12 months of the normalization treatment. At basal time, the T polymorphic allele of the rs16944 was associated with lower IL-1β mRNA expression (p = 0.006); and higher glucose level was positive correlated to IL-1β protein levels (p = 0.015). After treatment, the individuals showed a significant decrease in glucose level (p = 0.003), but they did not express significant changes in the IL-1β serum levels. Surprisingly, we observed that the greater decreases in glucose level were associated to increased IL-1β serum levels (p = 0.040). This is the first follow-up study evaluating IL-1β mRNA expression and serum levels in hyperglycemic T2D individuals and after glycemic normalization treatment. The current results contribute to the knowledge of the relationship between inflammation and glucose metabolism in T2D.Fil: Iglesias Molli, Andrea Elena.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
