Counting with the invisible record? The role of LiDAR in the interpretation of megalithic landscapes in south-western Iberia (Extremadura, Alentejo and Beira Baixa)
The megalithic sites from southwest Iberia represent one of the largest clusters
of prehistoric monuments in Europe from the Neolithic and Copper Age (5th and
3rd millennia cal BC). Unlike other regions from western Europe, there has not
been a recent effort to map the distribution of these kinds of burial across this
vast territory. Therefore, this paper aims to collect geographic information from
three regions of southwest Iberia (Alentejo and Beira Baixa from Portugal and
Extremadura from Spain) and to compare the archaeological evidence between
different landscape units. We have mapped already known megaliths (ca.
2000) and settlements (ca. 1500) in this area. Moreover, through the
interpretation of LiDAR datasets, we have identified new walled enclosures and
megaliths in the Extremadura region (Spain), the only one of the three where
LiDAR data are available. The new data reveals new connections between
settlements, burials and other archaeological evidence. Finally, we discuss the
impact that these new data have on a new overall interpretation of megalithic
landscapes from the Iberian Peninsula, stressing also the potential risks that the
massive application of remote sensing can have in the production of
archaeological knowledge. The research has been supported by the project HAR2015-68595-P, of the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. We want to thank A. Gónzalez Cordero and A. Carmona Agúndez by the local data that they provided. We would like to thank the reviewers for their insightful comments on the paper, as these comments led us to an improvement of the work.Peer reviewe

A protocol for mapping archaeological sites through aerial 4k videos
The present paper shows that is possible to record archaeological sites using 4k videos from UAVs. The here described methodology starts with the decomposition of the videos in the original frames. Considering that the recording of videos is taken at a regular pace the extracted frames can be selected in different patterns to assure a proper photogrammetric restitution. In this paper, we have tested different configurations (overlapping of frames and the number of ground control points)to design an efficient protocol. The results show that the method is suitable for surveying large sites and that 4k videos can be a reliable source for producing accurate cartographic products (digital terrain models and ortho-images).Peer reviewe
[EN]: In this paper we present new data about Castillejos I Copper Age hillfort
(Fuente de Cantos, Badajoz), obtained from the revision of excavations carried
out in the 1980's decade as well as from a new one made in 2003. This litfle fortress
is located on the north side of Sierra Morena hills, a not so well known area by recent
research. The role of settlements from 4nd millennium cal BC, the first paleobotanical
data and the finds related to metallurgical production let us to state the long
process of agricultural intensification in which the arising of Copper Age fortress is
inscribed. Moreover, the find of an assemblage of artefacts from the IInd millennium suggest continuity settlement in thie area and the detection of possible symbolical behaviours.[ES]: Presentamos en este trabajo nuevos datos sobre la fortificación calcolitica
Peer reviewe
Celtiberian landscape and territory in the upper Duero
The first millennial BCE in the Spanish Meseta is characterized by great social and material transformations. Bronze Age communities were small and featured seasonal mobility from their residences as well as scant landscape modification. However, the beginning of the Iron Age brought a proliferation of the amount of material evidence and the goal that their fabrication endure over time. The improving climate, the generalization of iron technology and innovation in agricultural practice allowed settlements to be occupied throughout the whole year. This entailed a deep transformation of the communities’ mindset and conceptualization of both landscape and social organization. Groups grew in size and changed the way the land and resources were understood. Alteration of the landscape became a fundamental mechanism to claim ownership and legitimacy, exercised through the construction of powerful defensive structures on settlement boundaries and placing the remains of family members in cemeteries. This doctoral thesis presents a holistic approach to the societies of the Upper Duero basin, from the perspective of symmetrical archaeology. The period under study ranges from the beginning of the Iron Age, around the seventh century BCE, until the imposition of the Roman social model, around the beginning of the common era, when landscapes and territories became an essential motive and starting point to understand native populations. To achieve our goal, we will deal with various sources of information: from the purely physical and morphological aspects of the landscape, to the constructions –settlements, cemeteries or symbolic and religious landmarks-, examining the houses and especially the burials. There is a long tradition of research and an extensive bibliography –not without its problems- dealing with the Celtiberian territories overall and the Upper Duero area specifically. Our work began by confronting the problems associated with our field, which not only involved alterations of the material record and its state of preservation, but also the documentation and recovery methodology. A significant proportion of the archaeological excavations took place in the first half of the 20th century and lack clear context, cartography, descriptions or inventory. Sometimes, we were not even able to access the findings, because they had disappeared or were held in private collections. The approach we took to study this region entailed other difficulties as well, mainly regarding isolated and independent subjects such as settlements, houses or burials, or diachronic studies about certain manifestations of material culture where the most important role belongs to the objects...Fac. de Geografía e HistoriaTRUEunpu
The Ambroz Valley and the Béjar Mountain Pass in Roman times. GIS and LiDAR remote sensing applications in the archaeological study of a Lusitanian territory
In the last decades, "Geographical Information Systems" have become an essential element of archaeological research. Its potential has broadened the capability of archaeologists to study the spatiality of past societies and has come to be an ally of "Landscape Archaeology". In this dissertation, many of its tools and procedures, mainly those related with spatial statistics and raster spatial analysis, have been employed to analyse a territory of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania (first Century AD- fifth Century AD). The results have shown us that a part of the territory was intensively occupied and that communication routes were an influential factor in the settlement of this territory. Moreover, they have also allowed us to explore the spatial context of two Roman temples located in prominent places.
On the other hand, in three locations, archaeological features have been sought through the visualizations of highly detailed Digital Terrain Models derived from LiDAR point clouds. In these places potential archaeological features have been identified.Depto. de GeografíaFac. de Geografía e HistoriaTRUEunpu
Understanding neolithic leporid accumulations: the examples of Cadaval and Nossa Senhora das Lapas (Tomar, Middle Tagus, Portugal)
The study of leporid accumulations has been widely developed in the last decades. Actualistic research allowed for a better understanding of accumulations by humans, different mammals and raptors. Western Europe archaeological records are rich in leporid accumulations of anthropogenic and other origins (intrusive and exogenous). Cadaval and Nossa Senhora das Lapas caves are located in the Portuguese Middle Tagus, near Tomar, central Portugal. Cadaval layer D corresponds to the regional initial Middle Neolithic while layer C is of Middle / Late Neolithic chronology. Nossa Senhora das Lapas presents disturbed deposits with Early and Middle Neolithic chronologies but also some bell beaker artifacts, which led to the necessity of studying the materials as if they corresponded to a single context. The archaeofaunal spectra are dominated by leporids, the majority of which are Oryctolagus cuniculus. Leporids representativeness is lower in Cadaval, both in layer D (NISP 57) and layer C (NISP 111) compared to Nossa Senhora das Lapas (NISP 425). Results indicate that leporids accumulations are a mixture of ingested and non-ingested remains mainly of exogenous origin, being human influence analytically invisible.
“dehesa”.[EN] The origin of “dehesa” landscape in Extremadura is analyzed from
the palynological analyses of Los Barruecos and Cerro de la Horca neolithic

Abstract: Digital enhancement techniques have positively impacted the digitization of rock paintings. This paper delves into the concept of “tracing” and its distinction from digital outputs arising from the digital treatment of the paintings. Specifically, the notion of signal-to-noise ratio is introduced to highlight the complexity of image data processing. Additionally, prevalent image enhancement methods, such as those based on statistical analysis, are discussed. The paper also outlines the new avenues opened by machine learning in pigment classification on rock surfaces, offering insights into the use of digital techniques in rock painting studies.
