    SWOWS and dynamic queries to build browsing applications: On linked data

    The linked data initiative is pushing dataset maintainers to publish data online in a highly reusable way through a set of open standards, such as RDF and SPARQL. The variety and amount of structured data available on the Web are increasing, but their consumption is still quite limited. In particular, applications that are used to explore linked data are usually generic linked data browsers or applications with hard-coded logic tailored for specific needs. SWOWS is a platform for declarative specification of applications con-suming linked data. In this paper, we describe the use of the platform for creating browsing applications tailored to specific contexts, and show how the declarative paradigm supports the development of flexible applications. To this end, the platform has been extended to support the dynamic generation of SPARQL queries. An example of a linked data browser created with the platform is given

    Modern software applications increasingly benefit from accessing the multifarious and heterogeneous Web of Data, thanks to the use of web APIs and Linked Data principles. In previous work, the authors proposed a platform to develop applications consuming Linked Data in a declarative and modular way. This paper describes in detail the functional language the platform gives access to, which is based on SPARQL (the standard query language for Linked Data) and on the dataflow paradigm. The language features interactive and meta-programming capabilities so that complex modules/applications can be developed. By adopting a declarative style, it favours the development of modules that can be reused in various specific execution contexts

    An RDF vocabulary for meta-programming with SPARQL algebra

    SPARQL queries can be represented in RDF in order to work with them as first-class citizen in Semantic Web applications. The representation used so far, SPIN SPARQL, closely follows the abstract syntax tree, but fails to directly capture the semantics and is hard to work with for query rewriting. Here a novel vocabulary based on SPARQL Algebra is presented. The adequacy of the language is empirically shown through a few examples

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Ground deformations monitoring by using the Permanent Scatterers Technique: the example of the Oltrepo Pavese (Lombardia, Italy)

    The applicability of the Permanent Scatterers Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (PSInSAR) technique for detecting and monitoring ground displacements was tested in the Oltrepo Pavese territory (Northern Italy, southern Lombardia), which could be representative of similar geological contexts in the Italian Apennines. The study area, which extends for almost 1100 km2, is characterized by a complex geological and structural setting and the presence of clay-rich sedimentary formations. These characteristics make the Oltrepo Pavese particularly prone to several geological hazards: shallow and deep landslides, subsidence and swelling/shrinkage of the clayey soils. The PSInSAR technique used in this study overcomes most of the limitations of conventional interferometric approaches by identifying, within the area of interest, a set of “radar benchmarks” (PS), where very precise displacement measurements can be carried out. More than 90,000 PS were identified by processing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired from 1992 to 2001 by the European Remote Sensing satellites (ERS). The PSInSAR application at a sub-regional scale detected slow ground deformations ranging from +5 to −16 mm/year, and resulting from various processes (landslides, swelling/shrinkage of clay soils and water pumping). The PS displacements were analysed by collecting data obtained through geological, geomorphologic field surveys, geotechnical analysis of the soils and the information was integrated within a landslide inventory and the damaged building inventory. Despite the limited number of landslide bodies with PS (7% of the inventoried landslides), the PS data helped to revise the state of activity of several landslides. Furthermore, some previously unknown unstable slopes were detected. Two areas of uplift and two areas of subsidence were identified

    Activation of amyloid precursor protein processing by growth factors is dependent on Ras GTPase activity

    The β-amyloid peptide is generated by the proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by the action of β- and γ-secretase. The mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. Using a cell-based reporter gene assay we analysed the possible signals and pathways that could be involved in APP cleavage. We used the stable cell line HeLa AG that expresses the human APP695 fused with the yeast transcription factor Gal4. This fusion protein is normally translocated into the plasma membrane and after APP-Gal4 cleavage, the AICD-Gal4 fragment released can activate the transcription of a luciferase reporter gene. Through this reporter system, we demonstrated that Ras GTPase, but not Ral and Rap, could promote APPGal4 cleavage. In addition HeLa AG cells stimulated with EGF or PDGF or overexpressing EGFR exhibit increased APP proteolysis in a Ras-dependent way. This process is also dependent on γ-secretase activity, being abolished by the γ-secretase inhibitor DAPT
