    Strong hard X-ray magnetochiral dichroism in paramagnetic enantiopure molecules

    Experimental evidence of magnetochiral dichroism is found in the hard X-ray absorption spectra of paramagnetic enantiopure molecules. An isotropic sample of a {Tb[Ni(pro) 2] 6} 3+ salt (pro = L- or D-prolinate) shows up to a 1% difference in absorbance when a magnetic field (1 T) is applied parallel or anti-parallel to the incident X-ray beam at room temperature.     Supramacromolecular organization of gold nanocrystals capped with amphiphilic hyperbranched polyethyleneimine

    The supramolecular structural aspects of hetero-assemblies constituted of gold nanoparticles capped with amphiphilic unimolecular micelles were studied using synchrotron-based small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Experimental results revealed that straightforward transfer of citrate-capped Au nanoparticles from an aqueous environment to a toluenic solution of amphiphilic hyperbranched polymers results in the spontaneous integration of the nanocrystals into the extended hydrophilic domains of self-assembled supramolecular structures. In this way, we were able to self-organize metal-polymer nanoarchitectures in solution displaying interesting thermoactive functions, i.e.: hybrid assemblies exhibiting negative thermal expansion coefficients. We consider that this strategy has potentiality to realize self-organized supramolecular hetero-assemblies as it provides an alternative methodology to spontaneously integrate nanoscale building blocks into preformed supramolecular objects.Fil: Picco, Agustin Silvio.     Temperature-driven self-assembly of self-limiting uniform supraparticles from non-uniform unimolecular micelles

    In this work, the self-assembly of non-uniform unimolecular micelles constituted of a hyperbranched polyester core decorated with a corona of thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) chains has been studied. As revealed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), these unimicelles form uniform supraparticles through a thermally-induced self-limited process, as well as exhibit molecular features commonly observed in PNIPAm-based gels. We believe that these results provide new insights into the application of stimuli-responsive polymeric materials as versatile building blocks to build up soft supraparticles displaying well-defined dimensional characteristics.Fil: Picco, Agustin Silvio.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Self-Assembled Redox Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes: Nanostructure and Electron Transfer Characteristics of Supramolecular Films with Built-In Electroactive Chemical Functions

    The mesostructural and electrochemical characterization of a redox-active polyelectrolyte-surfactant complex formed by polyallylamine tagged with an osmium complex and dodecylsulfate is presented. X-ray reflectivity (XRR), grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle goniometry (CA) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), including the numerical simulation of the voltammetric response, were employed to analyze the structure, stability and the electrochemical response of these supramolecular films. In contrast to redox-active polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), the self-assembled system presented here shows a mesoscopic order yielding a film of layered structure very stable to an aqueous environment where the hydrophilic moieties (amino and sulfate groups) are not exposed to the solution since a contact angle of 95º is observed upon exposure to water. However, the film shows a self-exchange electron transfer mechanism with an apparent diffusion coefficient of 2x10-9 cm2 s-1 for a film of 300 nm of thickness. This behavior shows that the film exposed to an aqueous solution undergoes a fast electron transfer process to/from the electrode surface and ions to/from the electrolyte solution.Fil: Cortez, María Lorena.     Formation of redox-active self-assembled polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes integrating glucose oxidase on electrodes: Influence of the self-assembly solvent on the signal generation

    In this work the effects of the self-assembly solvent on the structure and electrochemical behavior of redox-active polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes cast on electrode supports from aqueous and DMF solutions are presented. The complex studied is formed by complexation of osmium complex-modified polyallylamine (OsPA) with dodecyl sulfate (DS) surfactants. The structure of the films was characterized by GISAXS, showing that films present a lamellar mesostructure. However, when they are exposed to humid environments, films cast from aqueous solutions (OsPA-DSaq) undergo a structural transition that ultimately leads to the disappearance of the mesostructural order. On the other hand, OsPA-DS films cast from DMF solutions (OsPA-DSorg) revealed no significant changes upon exposure to humid environments. Both types of films were exposed to glucose oxidase (GOx), showing similar adsorption characteristics. Notwithstanding these similarities in GOx and content, OsPA-DSaq films revealed a more sensitive bioelectrocatalytical response to glucose as compared to OsPA-DSorg films.Fil: Cortez, María Lorena.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
