Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Effekt des Body-Mass-Index (BMI) auf das Aktivierungsmarkerprofil von Monozyten- und Granulozytensubpopulationen bei Schlaganfallpatienten
Der Schlaganfall rangiert sowohl in Deutschland als auch weltweit an zweiter Stelle der häufigsten Todesursachen und führt in zahlreichen Fällen zu dauerhafter Behinderung. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur gibt es begrenzte Daten zu den Auswirkungen eines Schlaganfalls auf Monozyten, Granulozyten und deren Subpopulationen beim Menschen. Humane Monozyten im peripheren Blut werden anhand der Expressionsdichte der Oberflächenproteine CD14 und CD16 auf der Zelloberfläche in klassische (CD14++ CD16-), intermediäre (CD14++ CD16+) und nicht-klassische (CD14dim CD16+) Subpopulationen unterteilt. Gleichermaßen werden humane Granulozyten im peripheren Blut anhand der Expressionsdichte der Oberflächenproteine CD16 und CD62L auf der Zelloberfläche in klassische (CD16++ CD62L+), proinflammatorische (CD16dim CD62L+) und antiinflammatorische (CD16++ CD62L-) Subpopulationen differenziert. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, die Funktion von Monozyten, Granulozyten und den genannten Subpopulationen im peripheren Blut von Schlaganfallpatienten in Abhängigkeit vom BMI zu erforschen. In dieser explorativen prospektiven Kohortenstudie wurden die o.g. Immunzellen im EDTA-Blut von 17 Patienten an Tag 0 bis Tag 5 nach einem gesicherten Schlaganfall analysiert. Mittels Durchflusszytometer (FACS) wurde sowohl die Menge als auch der prozentuale Anteil dieser Zellen sowie bestimmter Aktivierungsmarker auf diesen Zellen untersucht und partiell mit den Werten gesunder Kontrollpatienten verglichen. Als Kontrollgruppe (n = 17) wurden Patienten vor einer Kataraktoperation herangezogen. Beide Kohorten wurden im Vorfeld in BMI-abhängigen Gruppen eingeteilt. Die Analyse von Quantitäts-, Charakterisierungs- und Aktivierungszustand der Monozyten und Granulozyten erfolgte mittels fluoreszenzmarkierter Antikörper (verwendete Marker: CD11b, CD14, CD16, CD32, CD62L, HLA-DR, TLR2). Die Auswertung der FACS-Rohdaten erfolgte mittels der FlowJo10-Software. Als statistische Tests dienten die einfaktorielle und zweifaktorielle Varianzanalyse sowie der Tukey-Kramer-Test als Post-Hoc-Test (GraphPad-PRISM 5.0). Für die Regressionsanalyse wurde ein verallgemeinertes lineares gemischtes Modell für eine Gamma-Verteilung mit Log-Link-Funktion verwendet (R Version 4.1.0 und den Paketen lmerTest und ggeffects). Innerhalb der Schlaganfallkohorte zeigte sich bei höherem BMI eine Erhöhung des prozentualen Anteils CD62L-positiver Granulozyten. Gleichzeitig war bei höherem BMI eine Reduktion des prozentualen Anteils der Granulozytensubpopulation (CD16++ CD62L-) mit antiinflammatorischen Profil zu verzeichnen. Diese Subpopulation wird als entzündungshemmend charakterisiert. Beispielsweise aufgrund der Begrenzung der T-Zell-Aktivierung, sowie ihrer verringerten Phagozytoseaktivität und reduzierten Produktion von reaktiven Sauerstoffspezies im Vergleich zur klassischen Granulozytensubpopulation (CD16++ CD62L+). Darüber hinaus war bei höherem BMI der Anteil der CD11b-positiven Granulozyten in der proinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation prozentual erhöht. Hinsichtlich der Monozyten war bei höherem BMI der Anteil von CD16- positiven Monozyten prozentual reduziert. Es wurde zudem eine Abnahme der prozentualen Anteile der intermediären Monozytensubpopulation sowie eine Zunahme der prozentualen Anteile der klassischen Monozytensubpopulation bei höherem BMI beobachtet. Bei der intermediären Monozytensubpopulation ist die Funktion gemischt. Studien unterstützen sowohl die proinflammatorische als auch antiinflammatorische Rolle. Die klassische Monozytensubpopulation bildet mit ca. 85 % der zirkulierenden Monozyten den Hauptanteil. Sie spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Initiation und Progression von Entzündungsreaktionen. Weiter wurde bei höherem BMI beobachtet, dass der prozentuale Anteil der HLA-DR positiven Monozyten in der der klassischen Monozytensubpopulation erniedrigt war. Die vorliegende Studie ergab zudem, dass ein erhöhter BMI bei Schlaganfallpatienten mit einer Verringerung der antiinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation sowie einer verstärkten Präsenz der proinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation einherging. Die Ergebnisse bestätigen eine proinflammatorische Verschiebung innerhalb der Granulozyten bei Fettleibigkeit nach einem Schlaganfall. Es besteht die Vermutung, dass bei fettleibigen Schlaganfallpatienten die granulozytäre Immunabwehr gegenüber Bakterien verbessert ist, während normalgewichtige Schlaganfallpatienten schwereren Entzündungen ausgesetzt sein könnten. Die Erklärung für Letzteres besteht darin, dass bei den normalgewichtigen Schlaganfallpatienten ein signifikant höherer Prozentsatz an antiinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation (CD16++ CD62L-) vorlag, welche während einer schweren Entzündung in den Kreislauf freigesetzt wird. Zudem war bei normalgewichtigen Schlaganfallpatienten der Aktivierungsmarker CD11b schwächer auf der Oberfläche der proinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation exprimiert.
Es ist bekannt, dass er nur schwach auf der Oberfläche von ruhenden unstimmulierten Neutrophilen exprimiert wird und eine erhöhte CD11b Expression einen Indikator für das Vorliegen einer Infektion bzw. Inflammation darstellt. Im Gegensatz zu fettleibigen Kontrollpatienten zeigten fettleibige Schlaganfallpatienten reduzierte CD11b-MFI-Werte auf den Granulozyten, sowie auf den klassischen und proinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation. Überdies traten im selben Vergleich bei den fettleibigen Schlaganfallpatienten auch erhöhte Prozentwerte der
proinflammatorischen Granulozytensubpopulation auf. Erhöhte Prozentwerte dieser proinflammatorischen Subpopulation waren bei Schlaganfallpatienten mit höherem BMI im Vergleich zu Schlaganfallpatienten mit niedrigerem BMI zu verzeichnen. Es wird daher vorgeschlagen, dass der BMI besonders bei Schlaganfallpatienten im Vergleich zu gesunden Personen einen Einfluss auf die CD11b Expression ausüben könnte. Basierend auf den vorliegenden experimentellen Ergebnissen deuten sich potenzielle therapeutische Ansätze für Schlaganfälle an, indem gezielt die Anzahl und/oder Aktivität spezifischer Monozyten- und Granulozytensubpopulationen in einem definierten Zeitfenster moduliert wird. Eine vielversprechende Möglichkeit besteht darin, biologische Agenzien zu entwickeln, die gezielt auf bestimmte Subpopulationen wirken und somit einen Beitrag zur Behandlung von Schlaganfallpatienten leisten könnten
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
