The study focuses on the application of the Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTP) procedure for the observation of triad interaction among mother-father-child in adolescence and it intends to provide a preliminary contribution to the validation of the coding system of the procedure (FAAS 6.3). For this purpose, the LT P procedure was administered to 3 groups of families (N = 58): a group of families referred to Neuropsychiatry Unit (SC IAF), a group of families with a child admitted to residential treatment for Substance Use Disorders and a comparison group. Results indicated good levels of inter-rater reliability and clinical validity for the LT P procedure and the coding system proposed by the author

Swallowing ability and chronic aspiration after supracricoid partial laryngectomy

Objective: Sporadic episodes of aspiration may occur after supracricoid partial laryngectomy. To prevent risks of pulmonary consequences, a limitation of oral intake of food or a "nothing by mouth" regimen has been suggested. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term swallowing and pulmonary status of patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy. Study Design: Case series with chart review. Setting: Tertiary University Hospital Policlinico "Umberto I" and Santa Lucia Foundation, Rome, Italy. Subjects and Methods: The swallowing status of a selected group of 116 patients who recovered functional deglutition after supracricoid partial laryngectomy was analyzed during follow-up consultation. Swallowing evaluation included clinical observation, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, and a videofluoroscopy. When aspiration was confirmed by videofluoroscopy, a high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the chest was performed in order to assess the radiological manifestations of aspiration. A group of 45 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and normal deglutition was used as a control. Results: Seventy-nine patients out of 116 showed a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing suggestive for aspiration; only 45 patients had aspiration confirmed by videofluoroscopy. No significant differences in radiological findings were noted in the patients affected by postoperative chronic aspiration compared to the control group. Conclusion: Patients with functional deglutition after supracricoid partial laryngectomy show a mild and well-tolerated degree of chronic aspiration and do not require a limitation of oral intake of food. © 2010 American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation

Associazione tra attaccamento in madri adottive e bambini adottati in seconda infanzia

Relating to attachment paradigm studies, continuity/discontinuity of Internal Working Models (IWM) of children attachment -from early infancy to subsequent ages-, becomes a relevant aspect, both at a theoretical and research level. Nowadays, according to Bowlby’s hypothesis (Bowlby, 1988), researchers seem to agree on a possible and partial ‘revision’ of MOI, after the new relational experiences. From this point of view, a research field of a great interest is represented by adoption. This institution, lets children with early, disappointing and adverse experiences, have a ‘new’ familiar relationship, made of adults potentially able to be a strong ‘secure base’ and to give children a supportive and affectively available contest (Steele, Hodges, Kaniuk, Hillman, Henderson, 2003; Hodges, Steele, Hillman, Henderson, Kaniuk, 2003; Farina, Leifer, Chasnoff, 2004; Fava Vizziello & Simonelli, 2004). This pilot-study is part of a wider research plan, which employs theoretical and methodological instruments of the attachment theory. Firstly, the aim is to explore how much the actual state of the mind, secure regarding the attachment of the mothers, allows late-adopted children (from 4 to 7 years) to process insecure and/or disorganized attachment pattern, built on previous negativeexperiences, and to orient them toward more secure attachment pattern. Secondly, from a clinic point of view, this study-action -through a huge set of instruments- wants to give to adoptive family and to operators, useful information about child cognitive and associate relational development, favoring the early identification of specific problematic areas and therefore the chance to act timely. Therefore, a short longitudinal research plan has been elaborated that includes two surveys with mothers and adoptive sons; the first one, approximately two months after the adoption and the second one after six months from the first survey. In both meetings the adoptive dyads have been observed in a Procedure of Separation-Reunion Episodes (ESR, Main & Cassidy, 1988), to estimate the children attachment ‘behavior’. Moreover, children were given the following instruments: the Manchester Child Attachment Story Task (Green, Stanley, Smith, Goldwyn, 2000), a series of stories to be completed, it aims at capturing the "representation" of children attachment; the Leiter-R Scale, a non verbal test of QI measurement (Roid e Miller, 1997, 2002); the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R, Dunn, Leota, Dunn, 2000), to esteem the receptive (auditory) dictionary of the child, as for the standard Italian; the Family Drawing (DdF, Corman, 1970; Tambelli & Zavattini, 1998), in order to evaluate the quality of the family representation. The instruments used with adoptive mothers were: the Adult Attachment Interview, for the appraisal of the MOI of the attachment (AAI, George, Kaplan, Main, 1985); the Current Relationship Interview (CRI, Crowell & Owens, 1996), in order to explore the model of attachment regarding the couple; the Child Behaviour Check List (CBCL, Achenbach, 1992), in order to measure the maternal appraisal of the emotional-behavioural difficulties of sons. This PhD thesis, far from being considered a full and exhaustive research on relationships of attachment between adoptive mothers and late-adopted children, suggests itself as a pilot-study that proposes a useful research model to give a first observation of the frail post-adoption phase: we hope it will be the object of deeper, necessary study in the future

Effect of Doping and Morphology on UV Emission in Low-Dimensional ZnO:Na Structures

    No full text
Band-edge photoluminescence of zinc oxide materials reveals a phonon-assisted ultraviolet emission enhanced by Na doping. We report the synthesis of ZnO and Na-doped ZnO, the changes in structure and optical properties as a function of doping concentration and synthesis temperature. The obtained samples are nanoneedles, microparticles, and microwires. The structural effect of Na doping is studied by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals a contribution of band bending at the surface of the nanostructures, decreasing with Na concentration. Franz–Keldysh effect predicts strong electric field localized in the depletion region and appears to be the cause of red-shift in UV band emission of nanoneedles in comparison to microwires. Our results indicate that Na doping introduces an acceptor level between 150 and 200 meV above the valence band.Fil: Straube, Benjamin. Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. La concezione relativistica della devianza e della criminalità. Un racconto di Italo Calvino

    No full text
[The relativistic conception of deviance and criminality. A story by Italo Calvino] In her paper, the Author takes a cue from a youthful story by Italo Calvino to illustrate the relativistic nature of the concepts of deviance and criminality: that is, there are no acts and behaviors considered deviant or criminal at all times and in all societies. Retracing classical and modern literature, the Author links the elaboration of these concepts to a social construction of them, in the sense that the societies themselves define what is deviant and what is not

Combined Oral Contraception and Bicalutamide in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Severe Hirsutism - a Double-blind RTC

    No full text
Context: Hirsutism often occurs in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The efficacy of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) plus antiandrogens in the treatment of its severe expression is controversial due to the lack of randomized, double-blind, long-term studies. Objective: The primary outcome was the reduction of hirsutism in PCOS women objectively measured by videodermoscopy on the androgen-sensitive skin areas assessed by the modified Ferriman and Gallwey (mF&G) total score, after 12 months of therapy with OCP + bicalutamide (BC) vs OCP plus placebo (P). The secondary outcomes were to evaluate tolerability of BC and body composition as well as the occurrence of adverse events. Design: An experimental, phase 3, prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, P-controlled trial. Patients were evaluated at the baseline visit, at 6 and 12 months during treatment, and 6 months' posttreatment. Participants: Seventy women with classic PCOS (severe hirsutism, oligoanovulation, and ovarian polycystic ovarian morphology). Intervention: Patients received OCP + BC (50 mg/d) or OCP + P for 12 months. Results: The repeated measures analysis of variance showed that both treatments were effective in reducing hirsutism: The OCP + BC group had a higher reduction compared with the OCP + P group. No adverse effects were described during treatment except an increase in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein in the OCP + BC group. Conclusions: The association of OCP + BC is well tolerated and significantly more effective than OCP alone in treating severe hirsutism. We suggest a combined use of the videodermoscopic index and mF&G to evaluate the effects of androgen deprivation therapy for hirsutism

DIRITTO, LETTERATURA, MUTAMENTO SOCIALE. Le terre del Sacramento di Francesco Jovine/LAW, LITERATURE, SOCIAL CHANGE. Le terre del Sacramento by Francesco Jovine

In the first part of her paper, the Author focuses on the relationshipsbetween law and literature, highlighting how the reality of law and literarynarrative converge. In particular, she emphasizes the role played byliterature as a way to create law, conceived of as a manifestation of socialconsciousness and its correspondent ordering will. In the second part of thepaper, the Author analyzes a novel of Francesco Jovine, one of the mostimportant Italian writers of the 20th century, entitled Le terre del Sacramento(1950) and concerned with the struggles of Southern peasants forland ownership in the fascist epoch. Here Jovine describes both the historicand the current reality, as well as the hope for the future, where more justicewould be available for exploited workers. Keywords
