The e-book examines the tradition of painted sails in the Upper Adriatic as symbols of social recognition of the families of fishermen and seafarers. The colours and symbols painted on the sails were, in fact, a sort of popular heraldry of the sea people. In traditional seamanship this use disappeared with that of the sail, replaced by the motor between the 1920s and 1950s, although today it is widely revived in memory and on traditional boats refitted for pleasure. Specifically, the last sails of the Cattolica (Rimini) seafaring are investigated, with the identification of the boats and their respective owners (families) in the first half of the last century
EXTRAMEDULLARY CUTANEOUS PLASMACYTOMA
Neoplastic degeneration of plasma cells can show different clinical features, including multiple myeloma and plasma cell leukemia. Skin involvement is not rare in patients with multiple myeloma, and represents a poor prognosis. Appearance of a cutaneous plasmacytoma without the involvement of bone marrow is very rare. We describe a patient who had cutaneous plasmacytoma, with two solitary lesions of the oral cavity. The patient also showed a cerebral involvement, but no evidence of multiple myeloma, with normal-appearing bone marrow
The effect of x-ray scattering by water in the irradiation of cell cultures for the dosimetric characterization of a new prototype of IORT (Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy) device: Monte Carlo simulation and experimental validation
The electron beam emitted backward by plasma focus devices is being considered as a radiation source for Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT) applications. Radiobiological investigations have been conducted to assess the potential of this new prototype of IORT device. A standard x-ray beam, ISO-H60, was used for comparison, irradiating cell cultures in a holder filled with an aqueous solution. The influence of scattering by the culture water and by the walls of the holder was investigated to determine their influence on the dose delivered to the cell culture. MCNPX simulations were run and experimental measurements conducted. The effect of scattering by the holder was found to be negligible; scattering by the culture water was determined to give an increase in dose of the order of 10%.Health Phys. 105(4):000-000; 2013 © 2013 Health Physics Society

To actualize the valorization’s programs of Observatory and of the Cabinet of Metrology is necessary to know and to document the history of his life, his development and the increase of his collections. The Observatory of Modena started the activities after the Restoration, with the support of Archduke Francesco IV of Austria, that agreed in 1826 the use of the east tower of his Ducal Palace of XVII century and consigned the direction of the Observatory to Giuseppe Bianchi: the most important instruments were commissioned to the German Reichenbach and to Modenese Giovanni Battista Amici. In 1850 in the adjacent rooms, for Bianchi’s action, were placed the instruments of the Cabinet of Metrology. After a briefly period of Pietro Tacchini’s direction, from 1850 to 1865, the Observatory was directed by Pietro Ragona (1873-1982), that enhanced the studies and the meteorological instrumentation, and the it became Meteorological from 1867. With his successor Ciro Chistoni (1892-1906) the Observatory adopted the name and the function of Geophysical Observatory
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Monte Carlo simulation of the dose deposited into GAFCHROMIC® film by X-rays produced by the electron beam of PFMA-3
The electron beam emitted backward by Plasma Focus devices is being investigated as a radiation source for IORT (Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy) applications. A Plasma Focus device is being developed to this aim, to be utilized as an X-ray source. The electron beam is driven to impinge on a 50 μm brass foil, where conversion X-rays are generated. Monte Carlo simulations of the X-ray emission have been conducted with MCNPX, with the purpose of estimating penetration in and dose to human tissue. The electron spectrum had been determined experimentally and is used in the present work as input to the simulations. X-ray emission both from bremsstrahlung and from characteristic lines is predicted. The spectrum is found to be comprised of two components: one peaked at 10 keV and one centred around 50 keV. Doses to film determined from the present simulations are compared to experimental values obtained in a previous work by the authors: the results are found in very good agreement
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
