    Strategic scenarios in energy-environmental refurbishment of the massive building stock

    This report aims to illustrate the impact of energy-environmental upgrading strategies, when applied synergistically on building organisms. In particular it focuses on analysing the ‘massive’ typology, which has assumed a vital role in our building tradition as a high performance response to the Mediterranean’s specific climatic conditions. The energy and environmental refurbishment of a military Roman fort becomes object of further study through thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic simulations to display simultaneously different intervention scenarios. After an analysis of Mediterranean records/case studies offering a sampling of ‘massive’ architectures that stand out for the high thermal inertia, containment of energy losses, thermal performances of the building envelope are investigated through theoretical analysis on the relationship established within the main strategies of refurbishment: massive envelope comes up like an extremely dynamic component of the building organism, whose adaptive behaviour reacts to both external and internal heat sources and contributes to microclimatic comfort provided that all the other parts of the building cooperating. Thanks to the collection of local climatic data and their application in a first dynamic simulation of solar radiation on exposed surfaces and natural ventilation-verifying the relationship between built and environmental systems- numerical results for different strategic scenarios, made possible to highlight mode and extent of the benefits on the building organism triggered by the passive interventions’ synergies, confirming the asserted argument

    La presente proposta d’intervento vuole mostrare l’incidenza delle strategie di riqualificazione energetico-ambientale quando applicate in maniera sinergica all’organismo edilizio. In particolare si vuole analizzare la tipologia massiva che ha assunto un ruolo fondamentale nella nostra tradizione costruttiva, in risposta altamente performante alle specificità climatiche del mediterraneo. Alla luce delle più recenti normative nazionali (DM del 2009) e in linea con le direttive della UE, sottolineando l’importanza del recupero in chiave energetica come risposta concreta al problema ambientale ed al dilagante consumo di suolo, nella prima parte del lavoro un’analisi della casistica ampia del mediterraneo, offre una catalogazione di quegli edifici che per caratteristiche morfo-tipologiche comuni, possono essere definiti architetture massive. Caratterizzata da una conformazione che agevola una naturale ventilazione costante, e presentando spessori compatti, questa tipologia si contraddistingue per l’alta inerzia termica e per il contenimento delle dispersioni energetiche e permette la riduzione dell’impiego di dispositivi di tipo attivo negli interventi di retrofit. Nella seconda parte vengono definite le proprietà termiche dell’involucro massivo, con analisi teorica delle relazioni che esso instaura con le principali strategie di riqualificazione. Di fatti, se caratterizzato da un’opportuna successione negli strati costituenti in relazione al flusso termico, questo tipo di involucro è in grado di garantire condizioni di comfort interno ottimali . Considerando l’elevata inerzia termica di una chiusura opaca un fattore determinante nell'attenuazione delle variazioni climatiche stagionali - poiché smorza l’oscillazione termica entrante ritardandone l’ingresso all'interno degli ambienti confinati (in estate), fungendo altresì da massa d’accumulo (in inverno) - l’involucro massivo si configura come componente estremamente dinamico dell’organismo edilizio, il cui comportamento adattivo reagisce sia a sorgenti di calore esterne che interne. Tuttavia, come avviene in un organismo vivente, esso contribuisce al benessere microclimatico a condizione che le altre parti dell’edificio collaborino alla sua “attivazione”: nell’ottica della riqualificazione energetica di un edificio massivo, risulta quindi fondamentale tanto il miglioramento prestazionale delle parti (interventi puntuali) quanto renderle solidali a livello di comportamento termodinamico (azioni sinergiche) nelle fasi di accumulo, gestione e dispersione dell’energia. Partendo da questa premessa, nella terza parte il progetto di riqualificazione energetico-ambientale di un forte militare romano diventa oggetto di approfondimento attraverso simulazioni termodinamiche e fluidodinamiche per diversi scenari di intervento simultanei. A seguito di una breve contestualizzazione storica della tipologia, viene effettuata un’analisi della morfologia, che fa emergere problematiche e potenzialità del consistente involucro in muratura portante, prevalentemente ipogeo. La raccolta dei dati climatici del sito ed il loro impiego in una prima simulazione dinamica riguardante irraggiamento delle superfici esposte, ventilazione naturale e contesto, verifica le relazioni tra sistema costruito e sistema ambientale. Con un passaggio di scala, tali risultati fungono da base per simulazioni finalizzate a valutare il comportamento dell’involucro massivo al variare dei diversi sistemi di gestione dell’energia. Attraverso la lettura e la messa a sistema dei risultati numerici per diversi scenari strategici, è stato possibile evidenziare modalità e misura dei benefici innescati dalla sinergia di interventi passivi applicati all'organismo edilizio, a verifica della tesi sostenuta.This paper proposes a reflection on possible design tools for the energy-environmental refurbishment of historical massive buildings, through actions that take into consideration the historical, architectural and ecological value of the building. In line with our current national legislation and European directives, the research topic con-cerns operations on the built heritage as a mean towards the reduction of the environ-mental and economic costs, urban revitalization processes, as well as social and cultural enhancement. An excursus on the most popular massive archetypes localized in the Mediterranean basin, means to illustrates their common performance characteristics and their bioclimatic behavior. The recognition of the loss of traditional building methods highlights the need to recover a synergic approach in the push for intervention on massive heritage. The objective of this paper aims to outline an intervention methodology to define strategic scenarios for massive historical buildings that meet the three general approaches of: recovery, refurbishment and energy retrofit. This methodology is applied to the case study of the adaptive reuse of Fort Portuense, in Rome: specifically, the experimentation wants to improve indoor comfort, with operation on the envelope stratification and on energy management of the building, trying to integrate multiple devices that cooperate synergistically with the whole system as to provide a high-energy performance building

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
