Reflections of the tree of life motif on Turkish weaving art
Abstract:Weavings, which have a very important place in textile arts, constitute a very rich source in terms of symbolic motifs. The tree of life motif, which has a deep-rooted history in human life, has also become one of the common symbols of different historical periods and cultures. From ancient times to the present, he has made sense of the things that mankind believes in the society in which he lives, by using various symbols. The tree of life symbol has also been used in different descriptions in the mythology of many societies. It has been seen as a symbol of life and eternity among Turkish tribes from Central Asia to Anatolia. Various comments have been made regarding its formal features. It has been symbolically interpreted for thousands of years, sometimes with the idea that it symbolizes immortality and sometimes the cycle of life or fertility. In Turkish weaving art, on the other hand, superior weavings were made by using different forms of the tree of life and various materials and techniques. The tree of life motif, which is used especially in the art of fabric weaving and the arts of rug and carpet weaving, has mostly formed the main theme of the compositions. In this research, tree of life motifs used in textile weaving art were investigated. With the literature review, the original features of the tree of life motif used in different weaving types (shuttle, flat, pile weaving) were examined. The aim of the study is to emphasize the place and importance of the tree of life motif used in Turkish weaving art in Turkish cultural history. In the study, it is aimed to document the heritage related to the material cultural products of the traditional Turkish motif. In this context, plants depicting the tree of life used in the art of weaving and their compositional characteristics were examined. Keywords:Textile, Weavig, Motif, Culture, Tree of Life
Tokat province Dive/Günevi region alaca weavings
Weaving, which is the product of a deep-rooted past, is a rich cul-tural element in handicrafts. As a matter of fact, Anatolian geography is witnessing important sources of thousands of years of history. It has been revealed by many archaeological excavations that the history of weaving in Anatolia is based on very ancient times. One of the traditional weaving types produced in many regions among Anatolian weavings is ‚Alaca‛ weavings. The fabric that has been woven since the Seljuk period was wo-ven in the Ottoman period and in many cities of Anatolia. It has been seen that the province of Tokat, which was chosen as a field research, has a cul-tural mosaic in which many civilizations have developed. In particular, the Alaca weavings woven in the region come to the fore. When the word ‚pied‛ is researched, it means multi-colored, which is a mixture of several colors. It is generally defined as \"Flake fabric\" in fabrics that are woven by using many colored yarns together. There are striped (barred, tracked), checkered and plaid structures. Alaca weavings are diversified according to the place of use, the material or the region used. The art of weaving, which is the carrier of cultural heritage among traditional arts, has been shaped in different geographical environments. He created a rich spectrum in which he conveyed the feelings and thoughts of the people of the region he was in. The tradition, which continues from generation to generation, has succumbed to technology over time. While weaving studies were car-ried out in many regions of Tokat in the past, today, only a few masters of weaving art who came to the center of Tokat from the Dive region as mas-ter trainers and other master teachers who have received weaving training, are trying to maintain and keep the art of weaving alive within the body of Tokat Maturation Institute. In this study, it is aimed to examine the varie-ties and characteristics of the Alaca weavings belonging to the Dive weav-ings of Tokat province. In this context, besides the literature review, origi-nal examples were researched by meeting with the resource people in the field. The aim is to introduce the technical analyzes of weavings, their artis-tic features such as color, pattern, material and composition, and their vari-eties used in the region, and bring them to the literature. In this context, traditional and technical features have been tried to be presented in order to protect the values of cultural heritage and to create a resource for future generations. Keywords: Folklore, Dive, traditional weaving, alaca, handicraft, fabric analysis

Magnon and phonon thermal transport in oxides
Waste heat management and recovery and discovering energy-efficient devices are important problems that we need to solve. To solve these problems, one of the important thing that we need to understand is the thermal transport that happens inside the material. In my PhD work, I advanced the understanding of the mechanism of magnon and phonon thermal transport in oxides.
In these studies, I use ultrafast pump-probe metrology, time-domain thermoreflectance to measure the thermal conductivity. The first subject is the relationship between magnons and phonons in low-dimensional quantum magnets, cuprates, which have high magnon thermal conductivity even at room temperature. At high temperatures, I observed that the cuprates still have large magnon contribution to its thermal conductivity even at temperatures larger than the bulk Neel temperature. In addition, the crystals with different spin structures have different temperature dependences.
The second topic is on yttrium-iron-garnet, where I hope to understand the magnon-phonon thermal transport inside the YIG crystal, and also to understand the electron-magnon transport across metal-YIG interfaces. In particular, I would like to see how different deposition techniques can affect the thermal conductivity of YIG thin films. Knowing the thermal conductivity is important because YIG thin films are used for spin-Seebeck (SSE) applications, and thermal gradient is important in SSE application. I found that these thin films have lower thermal conductivities compared to the bulk YIG crystal and that GGG thermal conductivities are also lower than what were reported in the literature.
In the third topic, I would like to understand the phonon transport inside (SrTiO3)nSrO (n=1-5 and 10) superlattice thin films. Superlattices have been an interest of many studies because of its potential application for energy-harvesting devices, such as thermoelectric devices. I would like to understand better if there is any coherent-incoherent phonon transport transition, like what was observed in graphene superlattice, or AlAs/GaAs superlattice or other oxide perovskites. In addition, I also measured the thermal conductivity of films with various interface density, but no observable incoherent-coherent phonon transition was observed.
Finally, I was able to map the thermal conductivity of SiC ceramic matrix composite (CMC) using TDTR. SiC composite has been a subject of study interest because of its potential application for nuclear fuel cladding. However, existing models only used the effective thermal conductivity or only assumed that the thermal property of each material, such as matrix, fiber, and interphase, to stay the same before and after their incorporation into the composite. In this study, I reported the thermal conductivity of each constituent and their temperature dependences. The matrix has varying thermal conductivity from 50 to 120 W/m-K, and it is approximately dependent on 1/T1/2. The fiber has a uniform thermal conductivity of 22 W/m-K, and it is relatively independent of temperature.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-12-01The student, Ella Pek, accepted the attached license on 2019-12-04 at 16:23.The student, Ella Pek, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2019-12-04 at 16:24.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2019-12-06 at 13:55.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14699 on 2020-02-28 at 17:37:57Made available in DSpace on 2020-03-02T22:38:57Z (GMT). Belief Control Barrier Functions for Risk-Aware Control
Ensuring safety in real-world robotic systems is often challenging due to unmodeled disturbances and noisy sensors. To account for such stochastic uncertainties, many robotic systems leverage probabilistic state estimators such as Kalman filters to obtain a robot's belief, i.e. a probability distribution over possible states. We propose belief control barrier functions (BCBFs) to enable risk-aware control, leveraging all information provided by state estimators. This allows robots to stay in predefined safety regions with desired confidence under these stochastic uncertainties. BCBFs are general and can be applied to a variety of robots that use extended Kalman filters as state estimator. We demonstrate BCBFs on a quadrotor that is exposed to external disturbances and varying sensing conditions. Our results show improved safety compared to traditional state-based approaches while allowing control frequencies of up to 1 kHz.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Robot Dynamic

Rethinking the concept of an ‘Author’ in the face of digital technology advances: A perspective from the copyright law of a commonwealth country
As society continues to embrace advances in digital technologies, a major question that arises is the impact which such technologies have on the concept of an 'author' under copyright law. Prior to the advent of the user-generated content (UGC) technology, creative works on the Internet were produced by one or several identifiable authors. The advent of the UGC technology has enabled the active authorial participation of Internet users. This has made it possible for massively collaborative works on the Internet to mushroom where numerous authors' contributions are incrementally merged into an extensive single work. The concept of an 'author' under copyright law is premised on the basis that a work has one or several finite authors. Many UGC works defy this traditional mode of creating works. Taking Malaysian copyright law as the focal point of this study, the research examines whether the concept of an 'author' as defined in the Malaysian Copyright Act 1987 is sufficient to address the authorship issue in the light of the UGC technology. It concludes that the current concept of an 'author' in the Act is ill-equipped to accommodate Internet-based collaborations. It recommends the introduction of the concept of a 'deemed author' in copyright law and suggests that the status of a 'deemed author' be conferred on the entity who controls and determines the configuration of the resulting work
