    Knowledge Economy and North Cyprus

    No full text
AbstractIt is very well known in the knowledge management literature that knowledge has become an engine of social, economic and cultural development in today's world. Involvement of education in economic growth occurs through creation of new knowledge and transfer of knowledge and information. Better educated individuals will later become an innovator or creator of new technology. Schools provide the education necessary to understand this new information and technology. Education is a vital factor for the accumulation of intellectual capital to reach economic growth. As a small developing island with its eleven universities, government assigning education is one of the locomotive sectors of the North Cyprus economy. Today's globalised world, transforming economies from traditional labour based production technique to modern knowledge based production technique is inevitable. Rise of knowledge and technology- intensive jobs and economic activities, investment in knowledge based assets and increasing well qualified and educated workforces indicates the knowledge based economic transformation is necessary and inevitable for rapid economic growth. The main purpose of this paper is to point out knowledge and knowledge based economies and creates both the public and government awareness about knowledge based economy in North Cyprus. The paper also investigates the importance of human capital, intellectual capital and intangible assets in production process and emphasizes the importance of technology based highly productive production systems and their impact on economic development. The study will be a reference to other small economies as well

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The Effect of Macroeconomic Variables on Stock Return Volatility in the Nigerian Stock Exchange Market

The link concerning stock return volatility and macroeconomic indicators have been an arguable phenomenon all time long. It has also been one of the major issues to domestic and foreign investors in building an efficient and optimum stock portfolio in the stock market. However, the volatility of macroeconomic indicators adversely affects the level of stock return in the Nigerian stock market. However, the study investigates the effect of macroeconomic factors on stock return in the Nigerian stock market. The study employed secondary data obtained from Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) fact book and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin within the period of 1998 and 2019. The monthly data obtained were subjected to the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method of analysis. Findings revealed that money supply and aggregate industrial production positively and significantly affect stock return (β=0.466098, P<0.05; β=0.213141, P<0.05) while exchange and inflation rates negatively affect stock return in the Nigerian stock exchange market (β=-0.009285, P<0.05; β=-0.028260, P<0.05) respectively. The study concludes that macroeconomic factors significantly affect stock return in the Nigerian stock market at short run and long run. The study recommends that the Central bank of Nigeria should employ deflationary fiscal policy and Adaptive Stabilization Method of Exchange Rate policy in order to reduce variance between actual and expected stock returns in the Nigerian Stock Market. Overall, the study adds to the previous literature by identifying the dynamic effect of long and short runs of macroeconomic indicators on stock returns. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first work to incorporate money supply and aggregate industrial production in modeling stock returns in the Nigerian context

The rapid economic growth of China during the last four decades has reshaped the political and economic arena around the world. Under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, China has realized sets of reforms towards modernization and opening the economy since 1978 and these reforms have helped China to become an economic giant. China’s economy is still growing today and a distinct growth pattern together with a complex economic system and the society of China draw interest from all over the world to research and understand what factors trigger such fast growth rates. In this study, the relationship between economic growth and two subsectors of the service sector, namely real estate and hotel & catering in China, is analyzed. The study uses quantitative methodology and time-series data acquired from secondary sources. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag Method (ARDL) in E-views 10 statistical software is utilized to analyze the data. The findings of the data analysis reveal that both sub sectors have a significant and positive impact on economic growth of China in both the long run and short run. The findings can be generalized and referred to the entire service sector and it can also be claimed that a positive relationship exists between the service sector and economic growth in China

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
