    No full text

MURANO PIXEL. An experimental and shared research

    No full text
The paper describes the motivation, approach and working methodology of a research project financed with POR FSE funds by the Veneto Region. The research involved two universities (Università Iuav di Venezia and Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia), three glassworks in Murano, two network partners (Anteferma Edizioni and WASP) dedicated to innovation and the dissemination of innovation, and three young researchers. A network of professional figures, production realities and interlocutors developed around the figures institutionally involved in the project. These collaborations arose from the desire to share knowledge, production skills and experimentation. Moreover, the research was not limited to Murano but opened up this territory to international debate. This paper proposes the Venice Lagoon as a case study to develop research dedicated to the recycling of materials towards an increasingly comprehensive and complex approach. This is a challenge. The short circuit between the vitality of artisan work and research activity must be triggered

Sociomateriality as a partner in the polyphony of students positioning

    No full text
In this article, an innovative academic course, inspired by the Bakhtinian perspective and positioning theory, is presented and discussed. Within this dialogic framework, we argue that the sociomateriality of the setting cannot be considered as a separate voice because it influences the polyphony of the students' intricate positioning processes. The research context was a semester-long course on “Materiality in contexts” attended by 26 university students (6 male and 20 female), which introduced sociomaterial perspectives in education. During the course, hands-on activities were organized jointly by teachers and students, including two workshops addressed to children (aged 4–11 years) and their parents, in which the participants were involved in creating musical instruments and inventing figurines' means of transportation. The data presented in this article concern the transcriptions and analyses of three focus groups conducted at the end of the course to allow the university students to reflect about their lived experience. Through a qualitative analysis, we discuss several excerpts extracted from the focus groups to show how sociomateriality enters the polyphonic orchestration of voices concurring to define students positioning

Spontaneous abortion in Italy: social differences and temporal trends.

    No full text
Spontaneus abortion in Italy between 1980 and 1993 has been analysed with particular reference to temporal trends and to indicators of social status ( level of education and occupation of the women). Each year about 50000 spontaneous abortions are notified in Italy and the trend is slightly increasing. The national rate passed from 8 to 9 spontaneous abortions per 100 conceptions during the period 1983-93. Geographically, the rate decreases from North to South (respectively from 11-12 to 6-8 spontaneous abortions per 100 known conceptions in 1993). The national rate of spontaneous abortion is slightly higher for women with little or no education: 9.0 per 100 known conceptions for women with no or primary school certificate (schooling from 6 to 10 years), 8.8 for those with lower school certificate (ages: 11 to 13 years) 7.8 for high school certificate (ages 14 to 18 years) and 8.3 for university degree, in 1991. There were no significant differences between occupations, excepting agricultural workers who had the lowest rate: 4.1 per 100 known conceptions compared with 8.2 for women employed in industry, 9.3 for other occupations and 8.9 for housewives, students or the unemployed, in 1991. However, maternal age is confirmed to be a more important risk factor: the risk of spontaneous abortion increased from 6-7 per 100 known conceptions among women aged less than 30 to 20 per 100 among women aged 40 or more. The same effects are found in a logistic regression model
