A new discrete dynamical system of signed integer partitions
No full textIn Brylawski (1973) Brylawski described the covering property for the domination order on non-negative integer partitions by means of two rules. Recently, in Bisi et al. (in press), Cattaneo et al. (2014), Cattaneo et al. (2015) the two classical Brylawski covering rules have been generalized in order to obtain a new lattice structure in the more general signed integer partition context. Moreover, in Cattaneo et al. (2014), Cattaneo et al. (2015), the covering rules of the above signed partition lattice have been interpreted as evolution rules of a discrete dynamical model of a two-dimensional p-n semiconductor junction in which each positive number represents a distribution of holes (positive charges) located in a suitable strip at the left semiconductor of the junction and each negative number a distribution of electrons (negative charges) in a corresponding strip at the right semiconductor of the junction. In this paper we introduce and study a new sub-model of the above dynamical model, which is constructed by using a single vertical evolution rule. This evolution rule describes the natural annihilation of a hole-electron pair at the boundary region of the two semiconductors. We prove several mathematical properties of such new discrete dynamical model and we provide a discussion of its physical properties

No full textOltre ad aver raccontato l’arte e gli artisti del secondo Novecento attraverso la documentazione di cinquant’anni di mostre, studi e grandi manifestazioni pubbliche in Italia, Enrico Cattaneo (Milano, 1933-2019) ha sviluppato una personalissima ricerca visuale sui modi, i soggetti e i materiali della fotografia.
Questi due aspetti della sua attività, inseparabili fra loro come le due facce di una medaglia, si ricompongono nella fisionomia unitaria di un autore capace di mettere in questione i presupposti tecnici e concettuali del linguaggio fotografico.
Come lui stesso ha scritto: “L’opera d’arte contemporanea è spesso una cosa più un’idea... Difficile fotografare un’idea”.In addition to having chronicled art and artists of the second half of the 20th century by documenting fifty years of exhibitions, art research, and major public events in Italy, Enrico Cattaneo (Milan, 1933–2019) developed a highly personal visual investigation on the modes, languages, and materials of photography.
These two facets of his activity, indissolubly linked like the two sides of a coin, are recomposed in the overall profile of an author capable of questioning the technical and conceptual foundations of photography.
As he himself has written: ‘The contemporary work of art is often made up of a tangible thing and an idea ... It is difficult to capture an idea on film.
The Italian Pathways of Stem Cells
No full textIn this contribution, we take a look at the future of stem cell research, with particular emphasis on human embryonic stem cells and induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS). Their implications in terms of ethical and social issues are discussed through interviews with two top Italian scientists, Elena Cattaneo and Giuseppe Testa. In light of their answers, the introduction reflects on how stem cells research, interpreted from an STS perspective, allows us to observe the mutual adaptation between scientific practices which generate multiple biological artifacts, and the many ethical implications which characterize our biotechnological societies

terremoti e vulcani”, fondi MIUR 2007-2011
responsabili: Cocco, Amato e Stucchi1] dalla
seconda metà del 2009 è stata installata una rete
densa di stazioni sismiche nell’area dell’Alta Val
Tiberina (AVT, Figura 1), i cui dati in continuo
vengono trasmessi alla sede di Ancona del CNT
attraverso una dorsale Wi-Fi HYPERLAN
[Monachesi e Cattaneo, 2010].
La rete è stata progettata cercando di rispettare
alcuni criteri, tra cui: controllo continuo della
funzionalità delle singole stazioni, flessibilità nella
scelta dei siti, riduzione del rischio di fulminazioni,
possibilità di abbinare stazioni sismiche e stazioni
geodetiche. A tal fine sono stati adottati strumenti
a basso consumo per quel che riguarda acquisitori
e sistemi di trasmissione, accompagnati
dall’utilizzo di sistemi di alimentazione autonomi e
