‘Generation and Educational Science Institute’ (Austria). Helmut Fennes
E-learning in an Undergraduate Course in Research Methods for the Social Sciences: Reflections on Teaching
Starting with an overview of the opportunities provided by e-learning in the educational environment, this paper discusses a blended course in social science methodology offered to around 160 students taking the undergraduate Sociology degree at the University of Salerno (Italy). In particular, it provides a reflection on ten challenges of the discipline (e.g. relationship theory and practice, quantitative vs qualitative methods) which emerged during our teaching experience and discusses how they might be addressed by adopting e-learning. To evaluate the impact of the blended course upon the experience of learner, a web survey involving 114 students is carried out. Principally, the survey focuses on the study method and the relationship between information and communication technologies (ICT) and learning. The process that we followed (reflection on the characteristics of the discipline and the needs of students, implementation of the blended course, evaluation) aims to design a valuable teaching path requiring a renewed commitment on the part of university lecturers. In this paper we argue that a blended course improved the educational process in terms of knowledge construction and reflexivity
Social Research Methods 2.0: e-learning design
Starting from a reflection on the aims and learning outcomes of the undergraduate course on social research methods and an analysis of the entry level skills of students, especially related to the numerical reasoning, this article illustrates the design process of the course in a blended format. In particular, we present the activities of translation, implementation and innovation of the logical and conceptual structure of quantitative empirical research in the e-learning environment. From our point of view, the use of the e-learning platform allows the learner to overcome the difficulties that they usually have in the quantitative analysis of social phenomena

For many years, the European education policies have recognized the importance and value of creating a real "Europe of citizens" by implementing specific strategies and actions, based on non-formal education pathways for youth. In this direction, the "Research-based Analysis of Erasmus Plus: Youth in Action" (RAY) international project analyzes the mobility experiences of young people, promoted by the "Erasmus Plus: Youth in Action" program. This article presents the main results of “RAY Italia”, a research program included in RAY, on the development of citizenship practices and skills of the participants in European mobility projects
Chaos and Non-linear Tools inWebsite Visits
The present work is an application of linear and non-linear tools, with
particular attention to the chaotic dynamics, in order to analyze the daily visits to the
Italian newspaper website “La Repubblica”. The series is examined, using the time
chart, the recurrence plot and the power spectrum. In the phase space, the detrend
series consists of 5 clusters of points, explained by the frequency distribution that
is centred on 3 values. The analysis is performed by calculating the embedding
dimension, Lyapunov exponents and the correlation dimension that suggests the
existence of an attractor. A non-linear forecast of the following values is made.
In conclusion, some theoretical issues on the characteristics of a chaotic system
emerge
An empirical research on the young offenders competencies to facilitate employability opportunities
The present research is one of the intellectual output of the ILA Employability project (Innovative
Learning Approaches in Staff Training and Young Offenders' Employability Support).
In this paper, we will provide the main results of an empirical research regarding the skills and the
capabilities that young offenders can develop during their stay in the prison, in order to foster the social
integration after their release and to reduce the risk factors to criminality. The research was carried out through a
mix method approach, based on the use of quantitative and qualitative techniques. More specifically, a structured
questionnaire was administered to 364 young offenders and 6 focus groups were organized in the detention
centres of Romania, Spain and Cyprus.
Keywords: employability skills, mix method, social inclusion, young offenders
E-learning to overcome the problems with the teaching of social sciences methodology
In last years, Universities are updating their educational activities, thanks to the introduction of
e-learning. In this paper, the e-learning course in social sciences methodology, activated in the
undergraduate programme in Sociology at the University of Salerno, is presented in order to show
how the traditional difficulties of this discipline are faced up thanks to the online course, bringing
positive results in the learning process of the student
