Lose Weight and Lower Your Cholesterol
No full textWhile obesity in hypertensive patients has been shown to increase risk for morbid events, novel data in a second study suggest a role for modest, sustained weight loss in the reduction of incident hypertension risk. Dr. De Rosa and colleagues evaluated the effect of weight loss over 4 years in 62 overweight (BMI>25), middle-aged (30–49 years) adults in an ambulatory setting. Patients were characterized by the amount of weight loss (<1.8 kg (stable), 1.8 to <3.6 kg, 3.6 to 6.8 kg) and whether loss was sustained throughout follow up.
The findings revealed that a modest weight reduction of >6.8 kg was associated with a 21% to 29% reduction in overall hypertension risk. When sustained, weight loss, albeit modest, led to a 22% reduction in the risk for hypertension among middle-aged adults, and a 26% reduction in risk in older adults. Additionally, during follow up, risk reduction findings were strengthened by adjustment for prevalent cardiovascular disease. These results imply that overweight adults who are encouraged to lose even modest amounts of weight, have a substantially reduced long-term risk of developing hypertension if they can be encouraged to sustain loss over time

No full textIl contributo presenta un quadro generale delle prime fasi dell'apoikia di Cuma, all'incirca dal 750 al 600 a.C., attraverso un confronto critico tra le fonti letterarie che riportano differenti tradizioni e il quadro archeologico, che è stato notevolmente arricchito dalla ricerca sul campo a partire dal 1994. Le indagini archeologiche nell'area urbana iniziano a mostrare l'urbanistica iniziale e le fasi principali dell'insediamento greco. I santuari sull'acropoli sono stati di recente riconsiderati in una nuova prospettiva topografica, e i loro culti dimostrano connessioni con la madrepatria e diversi importanti aspetti della colonia. Le necropoli illustrano i collegamenti con il costume funerario dell'élite euboica, ma anche l'apertura ai modelli offerti dalle comunità italiche.This chapter provides an overview of early Cumae, ca. 750-600 BC, through a combination of literary sources reflecting different traditions and the archaeological record which owes much to intensive fieldwork from 1994 onwards. Archaeological investigations of urban areas are starting to reveal the early town plan and the main phases of the Greek settlement. Sanctuaries on the acropolis have recently been reconsidered in a new topographical perspective, and their cults show connections with the motherland as well as important aspects of the colony. Cemeteries illustrate the links with Euboean elite burial customs established by the colonists but also their openness to the models of their new world in Italy
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
