Distress and demoralization of hospital nurses as a function of sources of stress and job seniority
Aim: To explore job-related factors associated with distress and demoralization among hospital nurses, using a cross-sectional mixed-method design. Background: Sources of job stress for nurses are mainly organizational or emotional care-related and can result in adverse outcomes such as distress or demoralization, but factors associated with demoralization in nurses still need to be thoroughly explored. Methods: A convenience sample of 150 nurses from three public hospitals completed an online survey on job stress, distress, demoralization, and feelings of entrapment in the caring profession. Results: Emotional job stress was linked to higher distress and demoralization, compared to no job stress, and to higher feelings of entrapment, compared to both organizational and no job stress, among senior nurses. Conclusions: This pilot study points to the study of demoralization as a promising line of research in hospital nursing, but further longitudinal studies with larger samples are needed
Environmental assessment in harbor areas: study on the proposed expansion of Cascais Marina/ Valutazione ambientale in ambito portuale: studi per l’ampliamento della marina e per il molo crociere di Cascais
The Metropolitan Area of Lisbon is today an important place of trade and excellent touristic destination constantly evolving: Cascais is headed to this area as a high quality tourist destination, based on an exclusive offer related to flows of people with a high purchasing power; the AML aims to 2020 the achievement of important objectives of urban, landscape and economic development primarily related to the tourism.
In this context, Cascais offers to contribute to this growth through a tourism policy that provides for the expansion of its Marina in the configuration of port of call for cruise ships and large luxury yachts.
Planning for a project of this scale, however, it puts at stake a range of issues related not only to tourism but to a radical change of the entire waterfront, especially in relation to the relevant environmental aspects which changes can irreversibly affect the attractiveness of the environment that features this coastal area for quality of bathing waters and for its landscape value.
It is necessary to study the actions and their potential effects, which follows the development of a method whose objective it is essential to the environmental assessment of the validity of the project and the repercussions of such effects. The application of this method leads to the comparison of more planning alternatives and finally the choice of the proposal that best meets the initial targets
Dal Lido al nido. Abitare ad Alghero
The essay, in a narrative way, describes a collective imagery of Alghero as a leisure place, and how it affects the social use of the urban space and the real estate market.
Moving from subjective perceptions, the essay tells the tale of places too devoted to tourism, like Alghero or Venice, often invaded by this phenomenon, and how it changes the social use of public spaces during the time, in order to avoid (or, at least, to calm) the conflicts that emerge for crowd, parkings, dehors, and other topics linked to tourism. Spaces that are mostly considered as public are briefly described, under different points of view, mainly related to inhabitants rather than visitors: safety, belonging, use privileged by peculiar populations in peculiar moments, relationships with the landscape.
Finally, the narrative moves from the collective to the individual realm, describing ironically the attempts to gain a dwelling, that make difficult any project to become citizens of a town not so big, pleasant, but accuelling almost under an only point of view: the one of homeowners who want to reach the maximum income by their properties
The Rehabilitation of Some Historical Urban Port Areas in Sardinia
Due to the approval and implementation of the Regional Landscape Regulatory Plan (PPR), in Sardinia most of the attempts to transform the shorelines with settlements have stopped. The only places in which these transformations are allowed are urban areas, often with ports: so urban waterfronts have become a place for projects and programs, which not always are real outcomes of urban policies or strategic plans. Nor these projects and programs privilege the intervention on public open spaces rather than on buildings, and buildings are often reduced to mere ‘containers’ or sometimes, exhibitors of the griffe by a starchitect. Another effect of the PPR is that it has imposed to restart the process of municipal urban plans, which is still in progress, and the redesign of the urban waterfronts is one of the most important opportunities to be seized. The essay analyses some urban regeneration projects related to urban historical ports in Sardinia (Cagliari, Olbia, Porto Torres, La Maddalena, Alghero), from both the viewpoints of urban policies and design
An overview of the small BAseline subset algorithm: A DInSAR technique for surface deformation analysis
We present an overview of the Differential SAR Interferometry algorithm referred to as Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique, that allows us to detect surface deformation and to analyze their space-time characteristics. Following the description of the main theoretical aspects of the algorithm, we present several results obtained by applying the SBAS approach in selected case studies relevant to phenomena affecting volcanic areas (Campi Flegrei caldera and Somma-Vesuvio complex, Italy), aquifers (Santa Clara area within the San Francisco bay, California) and landslides (Maratea Valley, Italy). The overall analysis is carried out by using multilook DInSAR interferograms with a spatial resolution of the order of 100 x 100 m, computed from SAR data acquired by the ERS-1 and ERS-2 sensors. In particular, we highlight the peculiarities of the SBAS technique and its surface deformation retrieval capability for what concerns both large-scale deformation phenomena and more localized displacement effects.
Il saggio propone un processo di progettazione urbana per l’adattamento agli effetti del cambiamento climatico in aree di waterfront a Lisboa, attraverso l’utilizzo di strategie, scenari di progetto e modelli di valutazione economica– In the last years the effects of the climate change have led reduction of safety and liveability, especially in coastal towns, consequently subject to the dynamics of the latter. In this context, the development of climatic and risk scenarios in urban built areas can produce initiatives to limit risks, as well as it could include urban strategic projects, in order to identify evolutionary scenarios that focus the relationship between environmental structure and urban project, identifying design alternatives and sequences that can develop a new forma Urbis, adaptive and more resilient, able to limit risks, keeping the economic activities, integrating in the landscape and in search of an order.
The essay proposes an adaptation process to the effects of climate change in waterfronts areas (Lisbon), through strategies, scenarios, urban projects, economic assessment model
