An other tongue: language and identity in translingual writing

PhDAbandoning one‟s mother tongue for another language is one of the most profound aspects of exile experience, often fraught with feelings of loss and alienation. Yet the linguistic switch can also be viewed as an advantage: the adopted language becomes a refuge, affording the writer creative distance and perspective. This thesis examines the effects of this switch as reflected in the works of two translingual Jewish authors, Stefan Heym (1913-2001) and Jakov Lind (1927-2007). Both were forced into exile after their lives in Germany and Austria were shattered by the rise of Nazism, and both chose English as a medium of artistic expression at certain periods of their lives. Reading these authors‟ works within their post-war historical context, the thesis argues that translingualism is associated with a psychic split as the self is divided between its languages. This schism manifests itself differently in the writing of each of these authors, according to their distinct perceptions of their identity and place in the world: in Lind‟s work, it is experienced as a schizophrenic existence, and in Heym‟s – as an advantageous doubling of perspective. The first chapter focuses on autobiographical writing in a foreign language, exploring how self and language are bound together in Lind‟s English-language autobiographies. The second chapter draws on Bakhtin‟s notion of dialogism as it considers the relationship between narration, ideology and propaganda in Heym‟s war novel The Crusaders. The third chapter examines Lind‟s and Heym‟s representations of the writer in their fiction, and how their translingualism defines their perception of their own identity and role as writers. The final chapter shows how the two authors reinterpret the figure of the Wandering Jew to construct different visions of a humanistic Jewish identity that correspond to their own diasporic existence

Theories of Early Childhood Education continues to provide a comprehensive overview of the various theoretical perspectives in early childhood education from developmental psychology to critical studies, Piaget to Freire. This revised and updated edition includes additional chapters on Michael Alexander Halliday's view of language learning and the attachment theory work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth. Each author questions assumptions underpinning the use of theory in early childhood education and explores the implications of these questions for policy and practice. Theories reported in this book are a timely reminder of the importance of the relationship between theory and practice necessary for teacher candidates, teacher educators, and early childhood teachers. Students will learn the fundamentals while in-service teachers and professionals will learn the theory behind field observations for their certification exams."The Whole World is a Chorus: Paulo Freire's Influence." Foreign direct investment in the developing world has grown rapidly in recent years, making it one of the most important sources of financing to developing countries. The author presents a database on about 1,100 global privatization transactions from 1988 through 1992. Between 1988 and 1992, developing country governments earned almost US$62 billion in revenues from the sale of state-owned assets. About a third of those revenues came from foreign sources. Privatization in Latin America represents about 66 percent of privatization in the developing world. Privatization in Europe, including Eastern Europe, accounts for 17 percent, and privatization in East Asia, 13 percent. The heaviest foreign participation is in Eastern Europe, primarily for lack of domestic financing. Foreign investors'general participation in privatization programs was strong, providing developing countries with substantial amounts offoreign exchange. The relative size of the privatization program and the degree of openness to foreigners are important determinants of foreign direct investment. Each dollar in privatization revenue generates an additional 35 cents in new foreign direct investment inflows, and a 1 percent increase in foreign participation adds another 50 cents. In addition to the direct inflow of funds through the sale of assets, many developing countries also increasingly attracted foreign investment outside of their privatization programs. Privatization of infrastructure and the financial sector especially seem to have sent important signals to foreign investors, indicating an improved economic environment and possibly the eventual elimination of bottlenecks. Improved expectations about the profitability of investment projects render these countries more attractive to foreign investors.Banks&Banking Reform,Municipal Financial Management,Environmental Economics&Policies,International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Economic Theory&Research

    No full text
In the present study, the catalytic effect of 푁푎2퐶푂3on the pyrolysis of sorghum leaves and stalks was evaluated in the temperature range of 20 to 800 °C at three heating rates using thermogravimetric analysis coupled to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR). The results were adjusted with the nth-order reaction model, the isoconversional method, and the distributed activation energy model (DAEM). The latter model fits properly with three pseudo components to the first derivative thermogravimetry curves. The kinetic parameters calculated for the activation energy and pre-exponential factor are in the range of 159 to 195 kJ/mol,and 5.16E+13 to 5.13E+14 s-1, respectively. The analysis of the IR spectra allowed us to identify compounds such as, CO2, H2O, CH4, CO, HCN, C4H4O, HCOOH,and CH3COOH as the gases evolved during thermal decomposition. Moreover, the thermogravimetric curves show that the addition of sodium carbonate as a catalyst decreases the peak temperatures of the pyrolysis process of sorghum residues, and reduces the activation energy associated with the lignin and hemicellulose pyrolysis processes of the sorghum leaves and stems.

    Get PDF
Its purpose is to characterize the didactic dimension in the practice of rural teachers in four municipalities of eastern Antioquia. For this purpose, in methodological terms, a multiple case study was proposed, with the participation of eight teachers belonging to rural institutions in eastern Antioquia under flexible models: new school and post-primary school. In relation to the results, in general terms, different practical experiential elements are identified that participate in the teachers' decision making, and that respond to the particularities of the context in which they are located, as well as to the demands and requirements that the teacher must assume in his/her work. Likewise, the results indicate that the teacher is a subject called to continue thinking about his own teaching practice and all the elements that compose it, whether from his training, experience, resources, contexts, the way of teaching, the understanding of learning and particular characteristics of the students, among others, issues that, in short, make up the didactic dimension of the teaching practice.Rionegr
