No full textCommissioned with an award from the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund. Premiered on 19 February 2020 with the St Andrews New Music Ensemble conducted John Wallace.New Zealand Premiere on 16 March 2020 with Auckland Chamber Orchestra conducted Peter Scholes and recorded for Radio New Zealand and SOUNZ. Research included archive visits to the Marischal Museum and The National Museum of Scotland to view collections of Taonga pūoro, as well as the creation of three pūtātara for the performances. This research was connected to 'Recovering Samoan Instrumental Music to Promote Cultural Heritage and Enterprise' (PI Emma Sutton).The performances of Clarion were also part of 'Music Planet' (PI Richard Bates): 'Research shows that an understanding of our warming climate can be seen in the carbon being layered in the growth of the conch shell. Like the shell, de Castro-Robinson builds up instrumental layers in Clarion building gradually to its cataclysmic climax with the trumpeter utilising a range of calls and cries, keening, moaning, alerting, and sounding a warning to us of our need to act in the current climate emergency.

No full textEve de Castro-Robinson: composer of the original composition Robert Wiremu: conductorI was delighted to be asked to write host for Karen Grylls’ Auckland Chamber Choir. My first choral work written at her request was Chaos of delight III, a vocal soundscape of avian sonorities for women’s voices. host is also abstract, based not on a text, but on the Vowel Clock used to train choral singers. The whole work is based on the note A and its upper partials and as the singers move around the space, various harmonics from the chord are heard. The title refers to the movement of birds in formation, often called a host. Music composition portfolio
No full textFull text is available to authenticated members of The University of Auckland only.The inspiration for the four compositions in this Master of Music in Composition portfolio is my Taiwanese and Chinese musical background. My aim was to fuse this cultural difference with my knowledge of Western music and culture, in order to create a personal musical language. The four works are: Formosa Incident for orchestra, Wu Xing for piano duet, PaSta’ya for string quartet and electronic track, and Taiwan Morning Street Market for SATB choir. Formosa Incident represents Taiwan s political history and evolution into democracy. This work was selected for the 2016 NZSO Todd Corporation Young Composers Award residency where it will be recorded by the NZSO (unfortunately too late for the purposes of this submission). Wu Xing reveals the ancient Chinese belief in the five elements, with earth, water, wood, metal, and fire describing interactions and relationships between phenomena. This work was selected and performed in the 2015 University of Auckland Llewelyn Jones Piano Composition Competition. PaSta’ya is dedicated to Saisiyat, the Taiwanese aboriginal people. The PaSta’ya is a ceremony held twice a year where the Saisiyat seek to calm and impress the spirit world. This work was a commission for the Taiwan Formosa Quartet, winners of the London International String Quartet Competition in 2006, for a performance in 2017. Taiwan Morning Street Market is an attempt to represent Taiwanese daily life. In 2015, this work was awarded the University of Auckland Douglas Mews Prize for Choral Composition. The four works have been written over the course of one year full time study. Without the wisdom and encouragement of my supervisor, Associate Professor Eve de Castro-Robinson, Head of Composition at the University of Auckland, these pieces would never have germinated into the fully-fledged works they have become. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
