A preliminary report of recording the Stella 1 Roman River Barge, Italy
The remains of a Roman barge were found in 1981 in the River Stella, Udine, Italy. Its cargo consisted mainly of roof tiles. It was excavated in 1998 and 1999, and detailed recording of the hull, and a second wooden structure, was achieved in 2011. A spread of material upstream of the wreck has been investigated 2012-2015. The barge was originally dated to the first quarter of the 1st century AD by the in situ cargo. This article describes the bottom-based sewn-plank hull construction and examines it in the light of local boatbuilding traditions. The second wooden structure is also described, along with recent finds and new dating evidence from the dispersed material. The Stella 1 excavation was part of the Anaxum Project, a wider study of the Stella River's cultural landscape through time. © 2016 Nautical Archaeology Society
Portrait of the Pious King by Ana de Castro Egas
My research paper will analyse the biography or panegyric of King Philip III of Spain focusing my attention on Eternidad del Rey Don Filipe III written by Doña Ana de Castro Egas. I have chosen this topic because of my concern about the history and the literature written by women in the 17th century of Spain. The main aims are the following ones: to show the structure of Eternidad del Rey Don Filipe III, to discover Ana de Castro Egas, who has written at that time about her and the following studies about her work. Furthermore, I will analyse Eternidad del Rey Don Filipe III in depth: paratext, style, distinguishing features by the amount of laudatory poems and the dedication to the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain. Lastly, I will search about possible relations between Eternidad del Rey Don Filipe III and other works with similar topics; quoting works about la Condesa de Aranda, Nicolás Maquiavelo, Baltasar Gracián and Baltasar Porreño.Depto. de Literaturas Hispánicas y BibliografíaFac. de FilologíaTRUEunpu
Eugénio de Castro, the rare one
Eugénio de Castro [1869-1944] is nowadays a minor author in the Portuguese editorial and critic universe. However, during his lifetime he achieved a remarkable international prestige, particularly in the Iberian and Ibero-American literatures. I will inquire about the origins of his Hispanic reception. Thus, I will observe that Castro benefited from the attention of an author as central as Rubén Darío, recalling the elements that prove this relationship. I will further emphasize that this relationship depends on a common peripheral situation in Ibero-American and Portuguese literatures in the context of international modernity. I will also highlight that the Portuguese poet was instrumentalized in the context of Ibero-American cultural decolonization. Likewise, Castro was instrumentalized for a Latinism that was opposed to the threat of US imperialism, with the concomitant criticism of capitalist utilitarianism that Darío highlighted in his work. Finally, I will note that the Nicaraguan's interest in Portuguese materialized in a specifically literary influence.Eugénio de Castro [1869-1944] is nowadays a minor author in the Portuguese editorial and critic universe.
