Efficient Algorithms for Large-Scale Local Triangle Counting
In this article, we study the problem of approximate local triangle counting in large graphs. Namely, given a large graph G = (V, E) we want to estimate as accurately as possible the number of triangles incident to every node v. V in the graph. We consider the question both for undirected and directed graphs. The problem of computing the global number of triangles in a graph has been considered before, but to our knowledge this is the first contribution that addresses the problem of approximate local triangle counting with a focus on the efficiency issues arising in massive graphs and that also considers the directed case. The distribution of the local number of triangles and the related local clustering coefficient can be used in many interesting applications. For example, we show that the measures we compute can help detect the presence of spamming activity in large-scale Web graphs, as well as to provide useful features for content quality assessment in social networks. For computing the local number of triangles (undirected and directed), we propose two approximation algorithms, which are based on the idea of min-wise independent permutations [Broder et al. 1998]. Our algorithms operate in a semi-streaming fashion, using O(|V|) space in main memory and performing O(log |V|) sequential scans over the edges of the graph. The first algorithm we describe in this article also uses O(|E|) space of external memory during computation, while the second algorithm uses only main memory. We present the theoretical analysis as well as experimental results on large graphs, demonstrating the practical efficiency of our approach
A.R. Luria: Ideas and Prospects of Their Development in Pedagogical Psychology of the Twenty-first Century
A.R. Luria’s ideas are well-known and recognized both in Russia and abroad. Scientists from different countries are actively working in neuropsychology, a part of the psychological science developed by A.R. Luria. The author has shown the relevance and importance of the neuropsychological approach to the pedagogical psychology problems and the availability to choose an adequate educational and nurturing strategy from these standpoints. The study seeks to rethink and assess the importance of A.R. Luria’s main ideas from the modern pedagogical psychology’s standpoints. The characteristic of the main theoretical provisions has been set forth based on the analysis of A.R. Luria’s academic papers and the main directions and prospects for the development of A.R. Luria’s ideas in the modern psychological pedagogical science have been determined. A.R. Luria’s academic papers most sought by the modern researchers have been noted. The study is based on the materials of the thesis researches on the pedagogical psychology problems conducted in the beginning of the twenty-first century, A.R. Luria’s papers, the publications of other researchers who have studied his contribution to the psychological science. The study results show that A.R. Luria has significantly contributed to the development of the pedagogical psychology problems. A.R. Luria’s ideas on the interaction of the humanitarian and science knowledge in the human comprehensive study, the cultural and historical understanding of the psychical functions development, and the language evolution in the music language study for the musical education development seem most promising for the pedagogical psychology development. Note has been taken of the importance of A.R. Luria’s ideas for the elaboration of the relevant problems of the training and development of a person at any age; the study of individual and typical features in mastering a foreign language; the study of the semantics of speech and means of coding meanings in the context of professional training of psychologists and teachers, specialists in the field of artistic creativity. The analysis of A.R. Luria’s main ideas facilitates the deeper understanding of the modern problems of the pedagogical psychology theory and practice
Incorporation of acceleration effects into the one-dimensional-turbulence model, with application to turbulent combustion and shock-turbulence interactions
One-dimensional turbulence (ODT) is a stochastic simulation in which 3D turbulence effects are captured on a notional 1D line of sight by introducing instantaneous spatial re-arrangements (maps) that represent advection by notional turbulent eddies. These eddy events incorporate the possibility of kinetic-energy changes that are equal and opposite to changes of other forms of energy such as the gravitational potential energy change due to a re-arrangement of a vertical density profile. This illustrates that motion aligned with an applied force, in this case gravitation , can be associated with energy change. Using this principle, we 1) present a model of turbulence interaction with the dilatational acceleration caused by thermal expansion in flames and show results for a turbulent counterflow flame with comparison to DNS and 2) present a model for shock-induced turbulence and show results for mixing width growth in a shock tube with comparison to experiments
ODTLES: A multi-scale ansatz for highly turbulent flows
We use ODTLES, a multi-dimensional extension of the One-Dimensional-Turbulence model (ODT). ODT describes turbulent advection on a 1D sub-domain using a stochastic process for turbulent advection. These 1D sub-domains are coupled to obtain a 3D approach. ODTLES is applied to channel flow. Preliminary results for the pdf of the wall shear stress are compared to DNS
Low power hydrogen gas sensors using electrodeposited PdNi-Si Schottky diodes
The use of electrodeposited PdNi-Si Schottky barriers as low power Hydrogen sensors is investigated. The Palladium content of the film causes the Hydrogen molecules to dissociate and be absorbed by the film, changing the metal work function and Schottky barrier current. In this work we show that electrodeposited Pd(Ni)-Si Schottky barriers exhibit very low reverse bias currents compared to evaporated Schottky diodes. The Schottky diodes were fabricated on 0.5-1.5 ohmcm 100 n-type Si by electrodeposition of PdNi followed by evaporation of Aluminium contact pads. Electrical measurements at different Hydrogen pressures were performed on back to back Schottky diodes in a vacuum chamber using pure Nitrogen and a 5% Hydrogen-Nitrogen mixture. Very low currents of 1nA were measured in the absence of Hydrogen. Large increases in the currents, upto a factor of 100, were observed upon exposure to different Hydrogen partial pressures. A back to back configuration forms a device that draws extremely low power when idle. The low idle current, simplicity of the fabrication process and ability to easily integrate with conventional electronics proves the suitability of electrodeposited PdNi-Si Schottky barriers as low power Hydrogen sensors

Cost-effectiveness of digital photographic screening for retinopathy of prematurity in the United Kingdom.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the cost-effectiveness of alternative methods of screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the United Kingdom, including the existing method of indirect ophthalmoscopy by ophthalmologists and digital photographic screening by nurses. METHODS: A decision tree model was used to compare five screening modalities for the UK population of preterm babies, using a health service perspective. Data were taken from published sources, observation at a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and expert judgment. RESULTS: We estimated that use of standard digital cameras by nurses in NICUs would cost more than current methods (pound 371 compared with pound 321 per baby screened). However, a specialist nurse visiting units with a portable camera would be cheaper (pound 172 per baby). These estimates rely on nurses capturing and interpreting the images, with suitable training and supervision. Alternatively, nurses could capture the images then transmit them to a central unit for interpretation by ophthalmologists, although we estimate that this would be rather more expensive (pound 390 and pound 201, respectively, for NICU and visiting nurses). Sensitivity analysis was used to examine the robustness of estimates. CONCLUSIONS: It is likely that there is an opportunity to improve the efficiency of the ROP screening program. We estimate that screening by specialist nurses trained in image capture and interpretation using portable digital cameras is a cost-effective alternative to the current program of direct visualization by ophthalmologists. This option would require the development of a suitable portable machine. Direct comparative research is strongly needed to establish the accuracy of the various screening options
