Database for: Excavations at Tall Jawa, Jordan: Volume 3, The Iron Age Pottery
This is a Microsoft Access database of imagery, drawings, and photos accompanying Excavations at Tall Jawa, Jordan: Volume 3, The Iron Age Pottery by P.M. Michèle Daviau. The text and database present a detailed typology of the Iron Age pottery excavated from 1989 to 1995. Together, they represent an in-depth analysis of the forming techniques employed to make each type of vessel from bowls to colanders, cooking pots to pithoi.
The digital archive is a work in progress by the author. The archive currently holds the collection for Excavation Field D. Upon completion, it will include seven collections, each one consisting of a database of diagnostic sherds and vessels as well as the images of these pots as .tiff files. Databases are related to excavation fields and are designed for meaningful searches: A, B, C-east, C-west, A-east (associated with C-west), D and E

Masticatory behavior and chewing difficulties in young adults with temporomandibular disorders
BACKGROUND:
Difficulties and limitations on masticatory function are among the main reasons why patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) seek care.
OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the masticatory behaviour and perception of chewing difficulties in adults with mild TMD of recent onset, considering the presence of malocclusion.
METHODS:
Eighty-one young adults were divided into groups according to the presence of TMD and malocclusion: Non-TMD Normal Occlusion (n = 18), Non-TMD Malocclusion (n = 22), TMD Normal Occlusion (n = 18) and TMD Malocclusion (n = 23). TMD was assessed using the TMD Research Diagnostic Criteria and volunteers also answered questionnaires regarding their perception about jaw functional limitation and difficulty to chew foods of different textures. Masticatory and swallowing behaviours were assessed using the Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation with Scores (OMES) protocol. Chewing time and chewing frequency taken to ingest the test-food were also obtained. Two-way-ANOVA was used to analyse the TMD, occlusion and TMD × occlusion interaction effects.
RESULTS:
Temporomandibular disorder effect was observed on vertical jaw mobility and jaw function limitation total scores, meaning that groups differed in the perception of opening limitation and mandibular limitation according to TMD status with a medium effect size. Also, more changes in chewing function (OMES-chewing score) and higher chewing frequency was observed in the presence of TMD (P < 0.05). Occlusion effect was only observed on OMES-swallowing score and no TMD × occlusion interaction effect was observed.
CONCLUSION:
Changes in chewing behaviour, frequency and perception of mandibular limitation was observed in the presence of TMD, pointing out the importance of functional evaluation when planning and establishing a treatment plan
Evaluation Of Oro-facial Function In Young Subjects With Temporomandibular Disorders
The aim of this study was to evaluate bite force (BF) and oro-facial functions at different dentition phases (initial-mixed, intermediate-mixed, final-mixed and permanent dentition) in children and adolescents diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The sample was selected from four public schools in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Of the 289 participants recruited, aged 8-14 years old, 46 were placed into the TMD group. TMD was diagnosed using Axis I of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (2011). Oro-facial functions were evaluated using the Nordic Orofacial Test-Screening (NOT-S), which involves both an interview and a clinical examination. BF was measured using a digital gnathodynamometer. Age and body mass index (BMI) were also considered. The data were analysed by the following tests: Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Student's t-test, Spearman and Pearson coefficients, Qui-square test, Fisher's exact or binomial test, as indicated. Moreover, univariate and multivariable logistic regression were applied. For the TMD group, scores associated with NOT-S interview and NOT-S total were higher than for the control group (P = 0·033 and P = 0·0062, respectively). No differences in BF between genders or groups (P > 0·05) were detected. Variables included in the multivariate logistic regression were BMI and NOT-S total. Based on this analysis, NOT-S total was associated with TMDs. Reported sensory function was the specific domain within NOT-S interview that established the significant difference between the groups (P = 0·021). The TMD group also had a greater number of alterations in the face-at-rest domain of the NOT-S exam (P = 0·007). Concluding, it did not detect an association between TMDs and either dentition phase or BF. Instead, BF correlated with age and BMI. Oro-facial dysfunction was associated with TMD in the studied sample, but this association may be bidirectional, requiring further researches. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.417496506Zhao, L., Monahan, A utilização de pastagens e forragens e a conservação do solo : exemplos da erosão verificada num solo litólico não húmico de xisto mosqueado na região de Castelo Branco
A erosão acelerada é um processo preocupante de degradação do solo, a nível nacional e mundial, sendo responsável pela desertificação de extensas áreas.
Neste trabalho são apresentados os valores de escoamento e de perda de solo por erosão hídrica, na estação experimental de erosão da escola Superior Agrária de Castelo Branco (ensaio em Solos Litólicos Não Húmicos de xistos mosqueados) ao longo dos anos hidrológicos de 1991-1992 a 1996-1997.
Este campo de ensaio é constituído por 18 talhões experimentais, com 6 modalidades e 3 repetições, em que se pretende comparar os efeitos de uma monocultura cerealífera com uma rotação predominantemente forrageira (trianual), ambas tradicionais na região, comparando-as ainda com um prado permanente de sequeiro e com uma modalidade de solo mantido permanentemente nu através de mobilizações realizadas segundo o maior declive.
Tem-se vindo a verificar que nos talhões onde a vegetação é mais densa e permanente as perdas de solo são substancialmente menores que com outro tipo de modalidade de utilização
