    No full text
Reinhold Niebuhr was a crucial figure in the cultural and political life of the United States. The author, through the discussion of two recent books of Giovanni Dessì (Intelligenza e potere, Roma 2021) and Luisa Borghesi (Il senso della storia, Roma 2021), reflects on the protestant theologian’s influence in the American public debate during the twentieth century. Niebuhr was a proponent of a wide range of debates on political, religious, ethical, and cultural issues with other seminal thinkers (American or refugee), including John Dewey, Paul Tillich, Karl Löwith, George F. Kennan, Hans J. Morgenthau, and Martin Luther King Jr. By discussing the theses of Dessì and Borghesi, the author points out Niebuhr’s innate ability to be a bridge between the American and European traditions

Eighty years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and in a condition of international (dis)order in which the possibility of resorting to nuclear weapons is increasingly evoked, the writings of Morgenthau and Niebuhr offer a valuable contribution for reflecting on the moral, political, and existential implications of nuclear technology. Both remind us that technological progress is not, in itself, a guarantee of moral progress, and that, in the face of the threat of self-destruction, a responsible and pragmatic approach to international relations is essential. In many ways, their legacy—albeit in a very different context—remains relevant for understanding the dynamics of the contemporary world

    Politica e fake news

During the twentieth century, two seminal thinkers of the Political realism, Reinhold Niebuhr and Hans J. Morgenthau, contrasted with the prevailing approach of the contemporary social sciences, denouncing the alleged abuses of positivism, the problematic relationship between science and values, and the weak boundary between description and prescription. On one hand, the Protestant theologian studied the domestic and international politics of the United States, opposing to liberal idealism and stating an anti-Pelagian stance. On the other hand, the author of Politics Among Nations reflected on the «poverty» of scientism applied to the study of politics and highlighted the «limits» of power. Both scholars agreed with the need not only to exceed the rationalism that united the political science but also to use realism in order to better understand politics. At the same time, they reaffirmed the inextricable ethical and normative dimension of the political action. This article analyzes their contribution in order to expose its potentials as well as limits

The essays collected in this volume—translated here for the first time for Italian readers—were written between 1934 and 1963, some in the years leading up to the Second World War, others during the most intense phase of the Cold War. The author—described by "Time" magazine in 1948 as the “theologian of the American establishment”—presents the distinctive features of his "Christian realism": one of the most original political theories of the twentieth century, which helped inspire Roosevelt’s New Deal in the United States. In light of both domestic and international developments, Niebuhr addresses political, social, ethical, and theological themes that remain strikingly relevant today: optimism or pessimism in liberal democracies, the role of utopias in political action, the relationship between peace and the Church, the illusions of a world government, the nuclear dilemma, and the need to set limits on military power—even in times of war. The aim is to move beyond tragedy and utopia, to remind twentieth-century humanity of the dramatic mystery of history and the inherent ambiguity of politics

Il «sorriso complice» degli Stati Uniti. Reinhold Niebuhr e l’ironia della storia americana

In The Irony of American History Reinhold Niebuhr used the concept of «irony» to explain the paradoxical condition of the United States in the international system of the 1950s. According to Niebuhr, America was involved in an ironic confutation of its sense of virtue, strength, security and wisdom. After the end of the Cold War, nothing seems to have changed. Indeed, the United States is facing new ambiguous situations. This article analyzes the lasting validity of the concept of irony in American foreign policy
