Four Replication Experiments of Kidd and Castano (2013)

The data is from the published article: Samur, D., Tops, M., & Koole, S. L. (2017). Does a single session of reading literary fiction prime enhanced mentalising performance? Four replication experiments of Kidd and Castano (2013). Cognition and Emotion, 1-15. Abstract: Prior experiments indicated that reading literary fiction improves mentalising performance relative to reading popular fiction, non-fiction, or not reading. However, the experiments had relatively small sample sizes and hence low statistical power. To address this limitation, the present authors conducted four high-powered replication experiments (combined N = 1006) testing the causal impact of reading literary fiction on mentalising. Relative to the original research, the present experiments used the same literary texts in the reading manipulation; the same mentalising task; and the same kind of participant samples. Moreover, one experiment was pre-registered as a direct replication. In none of the experiments did reading literary fiction have any effect on mentalising relative to control conditions. The results replicate earlier findings that familiarity with fiction is positively correlated with mentalising. Taken together, the present findings call into question whether a single session of reading fiction leads to immediate improvements in mentalising

The Olivetti's experience in southern Italy. The factories of human worker

Halfway through the 20th century, the Italian industrial buildings within the Adriano Olivetti’s communitas obtain a continuously more defined expressiveness, which join the awareness of the functional aspects, a harmonic renovation of the environmental conditions and a reestablished human dimension. The composition scheme of the estate in Pozzuoli, planned by L. Cosenza, denies the industry idea itself in which all functions are focused. On the contrary, realizes a open set on urban scale, integrated at the surrounding context. As well as the factory in Caserta, planned by M. Zanuso and E. Vittoria, responds to the new demands of humanezed industrial culture. Olivetti’s factories are born from the consideration of architecture according to which it represents a useful instrument for ethical and social revolution; to a greater extent the industrial one, lived by the working man, which is always considered with respect, because he is the main actor in the chain of progress, the protagonist of future civilization

    Multi-Web, event-centric urban information integration

    No full text
In this paper, we present the MI-Search approach for enabling urban users to perform event-centric surfing of a multiplicity of web contents. MI-Search aims at exploiting traditional web sites and spontaneous user comments/posts in an integrated way, by relying on web data extracted from different sources and systems about the events of a selected urban space. The notion of smart city view is introduced in the paper to enforce a tailored exploration of these web contents according to the personal user interests expressed as keywords, geo-location constraints, and user-agenda appointments

Urban information integration through smart city views

    No full text
Obtaining a tailored and integrated information about events and points of interest of an urban area is becoming a major challenging issue for users like citizens and tourists that aim ateffectively enjoying the urban life initiatives. Inthis paper, we propose a comprehensive approach for urban information integration based on: i) similarity clusters, to aggregate web contents with different nature but similar topic; ii) smart city views, to package and deliver tailored cluster contents to the final users filtered according to user interest, geo-location, and time-based criteria, and iii) crowdsourced recommendations, to highlight the city view contents based on event freshness and popularity

Building Reusable Components through Project Evolution Analysis

    No full text
A methodological approach apt to facilitate reuse of project components by exploiting temporal information related to actual project evolution, is presented. A temporal model is defined to represent, in a repository, project histories and reuse histories in different applications. The approach is intended to support the reuse engineer in determining candidate project components for reuse and in maintaining existing reusable components in the repository. Reusability of conceptual components, in the framework of information systems conceptual design, is considered

How structural modifications can tune the asymmetric cyclopropanations catalyzed by Cu(I) complexes of chiral pyridine containing macrocylcic ligands (Pc-L*)

We have recently reported that copper(I) complexes of the new C1-symmetric pyridine-based 12-membered tetraaza macrocycles, Pyridine Containing Ligands (Pc-L*), are competent catalysts in the asymmetric cyclopropanation.[1] We report here the synthesis of new C1- and C2-symmetric Pc-L* macrocycles and the use of their Cu(I) complexes as catalysts for the title reaction. The synthetic paths, reportedi in Scheme 1, are very simple and they take advantage of commercially available, enantiomerically pure, chiral amino-alcohols and/or primary amines. These last compounds can react either with 2,6-bis(chloromethyl)pyridine(path A) or with the stereochemically pure forms of the alkyl pyridines obtained by the Lipase-catalyzed kinetic acetylation of 2,6-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)pyridine [2] (path B). Ligands with different structures have been obtained in moderate to good yields (40-80%) and they have been fully characterized. The Cu(I) complexes of those ligands showed good catalytic activities in the cyclopropanation of differently substituted olefins employing ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) as carbene precursor. In all cases a complete conversion of EDA was observed and, depending on the employed ligand, cyclopropanes were obtained with tunable cis/trans stereoselectivities and e.e. up to 96%.
