Cultural Heritage Education: a matter of representation
No full textIn the processes of cultural heritage education creating new representations is crucial. Whether mental, visual, or textual, individual or collective, these representations are essential to identifying and communicating the cultural values embodied in each landscape. How then should representation intervene in the processes of cultural heritage education from an interdisciplinary perspective? In the ScAR (Schools Activate Resources) project, academics, teachers, students, and experts from a variety of backgrounds created and shared multiple interpretations of the everyday cultural landscape of a peripheral area in the South of Milan. The essay discusses the meaning and the different purposes of the process, focusing on methodological aspects, questioning the role of new technologies and the relevance of more traditional techniques. The chapter is divided into five sections. The first one, based on references from the philosophical, anthropological, and sociological spheres, introduces the theme of the heuristic and interpretative value of each representation and opens to the nodal relationship connecting cultural heritage and representation. The second one explores, in the field of heritage studies, the complex relationships between representation, visuality, and cultural heritage as a cultural and social process. The third section opens with the broad theme of the representation of heritage in education. The fourth and fifth develop this theme from the experience of the ScAR project, considering the role of schools and focusing on the peculiarities of heritage education in ordinary or degraded landscapes and marginal, fragile areas
The labyrinths of Peter Sís. Picture books to travel through space and time
No full textThis essay assumes the concept of the labyrinth in a broad sense, as a picture, as a symbol and as a geometric structure, but also as a narrative structure and as a metaphor: the labyrinth of History, the labyrinths of the mind, the labyrinths of life. The study takes into consideration the special relationship that links spatiality and identity in the Czech-born American artist Peter Sís’s work and examines a selection of the many ‘labyrinths’ present in the author’s biographical and autobiographical picture books, which seem designed to make the reader travel in space and time and to take him off the usual routes. Sís’s illustrations actually seem to be imbued with the mentality of the time the story is set in, furthermore telling biographies far away in time or stories that take place in distant lands, the author invites his young readers into the meanders of personal and collective memory. Moreover, Sís’s books can be considered a means to introduce young readers to topological structures, projective forms and the codes of cartographic language, a means to develop their spatial and reading and prefiguration skills
Introduction. Cultural Heritage Education in the Everyday Landscape
No full textHeritage education applied to the ‘everyday landscape’ encourages young people to rediscover, interpret and communicate their own local heritage, reinventing it to the future. Involving schools in this process means putting them at the centre of a process of engagement, active understanding, critical knowledge, signification and responsibility with respect to their own everyday urban environment, and having them enjoy all this. This approach promotes the knowledge of a little-known and little-valued heritage even in weak urban areas and vulnerable local societies, increasing the active citizenship of students and their families to the territory. This book is inspired by the three-year ScAR research project – “Schools Activates Resources. Stitching up the lost heritage of the suburbs” – carried out by a group of researchers from the Politecnico di Milano in the southern peripheral districts of Milan, a context marked by spatial and social criticalities. In line with the European Landscape Convention, the project embraces cultural landscapes and heritage as a system of values identified by populations and in constant evolution. Tangible and intangible heritage elements fuel the promotion of intergenerational and intercultural dialogue and represent an opportunity for resilient social and territorial development. This book provides a reflection on the research work carried out and the viewpoints of the various contributors involved, and collects the testimonies of the protagonists of similar experiences, proposing an interdisciplinary perspective on the themes addressed by the project
Mario Bellini. Il Disegno del Progetto / Mario Bellini. The Drawing of the Project
No full textLa mostra è l'esito di un percorso di ricerca e di studio nell'archivio dei disegni di Mario Bellini, uno degli architetti e designer più importanti del XX secolo, a livello internazionale. Il lavoro è stato sviluppato in contraddittorio con l'architetto stesso, il quale ha curato l'allestimento della mostra.
La mostra presenta oltre duecento tra schizzi e disegni realizzati da Mario Bellini e dal suo studio negli ultimi quarant’anni, riguardanti alcuni dei progetti più significativi sviluppati nella sua lunga e prolifica carriera: una rassegna introduttiva che spazia dal design all’architettura, con alcune divagazioni di fantasia; quattro progetti architettonici, disposti cronologicamente; nove progetti di design d’arredo. Dalle sequenze di disegni, testimoni di tanti percorsi progettuali compiuti da Bellini, emerge con evidenza il ruolo che ha avuto e conserva tuttora il disegno come luogo del progetto: strumento di ricerca, pensiero, disamina del reale; efficace mezzo di comunicazione per visualizzare, verificare e condividere un’idea; potente ausilio della memoria, che rimanda a quel personale repertorio di immagini e riferimenti, stratificato nel tempo, a cui è possibile ricorrere ogniqualvolta si intraprenda un nuovo percorso interpretativo o progettuale.

La Mostra si è tenuta presso la "Galleria del Progetto" del Politecnico di Milano, Campus Leonardo, dal 12 Settembre 2018 al 5 Ottobre 2018.
La Mostra è l'esito di un percorso di ricerca e studio sull'opera e sui disegni di Mario Bellini, con la disamina di centinaia di schizzi dell'Archivio dell'si inseriva in un’iniziativa più ampia, legata al 40° Convegno Internazionale UID, che si è tenuta a Milano dal 13 al 15 Sett. 2018 (http://www.unioneitalianadisegno.it/convegni/2018/it).
Il convegno era organizzato da UID (Unione Italiana Disegno), associazione scientifica e culturale senza fini di lucro, che si propone di sviluppare, promuovere, coordinare l'attività della ricerca scientifica nel settore del Disegno 08/E1 e di promuovere il coordinamento e lo sviluppo dell'attività didattica delle discipline del Disegno, sulla scorta delle innovazioni scientifiche anche attraverso apporti pluridisciplinari. Il convegno aveva respiro internazionale e ha visto la presenza di circa 350 partecipanti.
In occasione del Convegno è stata conferita a Mario Bellini la Targa d’Oro UID, in riconoscimento da un lato della grande capacità progettuale dimostrata in tutta la sua lunga carriera nel disegno industriale, nella progettazione architettonica e degli interni, e dall’altro per il modo con cui egli ha sempre integrato nel suo lavoro progettuale la sua passione per il disegno, inteso come strumento di ricerca, di pensiero e di progetto. In occasione del conferimento della Targa d’Oro, Mario Bellini ha tenuto una lectio magistralis. La Mostra era strettamente correlata a queste due iniziative.
La mostra ha però avuto un più ampio respiro, essendo inaugurata prima dell’inizio del Convegno e essendo durata ben oltre il periodo del convegno stesso.
La mostra è stata accompagnata da una conferenza dell'architetto Bellini, con Ilaria Valente, Preside della Scuola di Architettura e Ingegneria delle Costruzioni del Politecnico di Milano, Marco Biraghi, Vice Preside e Delegato per le attività culturali ed espositive della Scuola AUIC, Rossella Salerno, Professoressa Ordinaria Decana dell'Area del Disegno del Politecnico di Milano.
La mostra ha avuto 1.210 visitatori in 3 settimane, di cui circa 100 visitatori dell'inaugurazione, che erano per lo più docenti e ricercatori delle principali università italiane e di alcune straniere.
La mostra è stata realizzata è il risultato di un'attiva collaborazione tra i due dipartimenti dABC e dASTU.
La mostra è stata pubblicizzata sul Corriere della Sera con un articolo di Silvia Icardi pubblicato il 12/09/2018.
L'iniziativa della Mostra è stata l'occasione per instaurare un rapporto con lo studio Mario Bellini Architects, con il quale sono state organizzate altre iniziative, tra cui un Master di II livello.

Feasibility and efficacy of an attachment-based intervention in a maltreatment sample in residential care: A pilot study
No full textThe effects of the Video-feedback Intervention to promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline on improving maternal sensitivity and sensitive discipline were investigated using a randomized control design in a pilot sample of mothers at high risk of maltreatment. The study included 12 mothers and their 10- to 36-month-old children placed in parental residential care, due to a guardianship order issued by the Youth Court. Both at pretest and post-test, maternal sensitivity and sensitive discipline were assessed during mother–child interaction via observational measures. Mothers who received the intervention showed a significant reduction in dysfunctional strategies of maternal discipline. Results highlight the usefulness and feasibility of a brief residential care–based intervention in such a risk sample, with promising implications for the prevention of child maltreatment

No full textThe present study investigates the relations between technical-scientific illustration and architectural drawings in the context of European Historicism. In the thriving publishing activity that characterised the first decades of the 19th centur y and aimed at promoting knowledge dissemination, such illustrations take on growing importance in all fields. In such a context, the case of the renowned architect and restorer Viollet-le-Duc is significant due to the quality and consistency of his theoretical elaboration and graphic work, as well as to his undisputed critical and editorial popularity. The tireless French scholar and draughtsman theorised drawing as a fundamental means of knowing the deep structures of reality in ever y field.The analysis of texts and images sheds light on a transfer of ways of thinking from the natural sciences to architecture that tran-slates into a sort of “biological” depiction of buildings based on unshakeable rationalism founded on life sciences. In accordance with his surrounding epistemological context, Viollet-le-Duc carries out an inquir y into architecture, and medieval architecture in particular, that was based on the study of the existing relations among the parts and the relationship between conformations and functions, and was borrowed from studies in anatomy and integrated with a reading of the rational efficiency of the architectural organism in mechanical terms.
