The concept of salvation in the theology of Karl Rahner

    No full text
This work explores the adequacy of Karl Rahner 1 s theologicalmethodology through an analysis of the concept of salvation in histheology. Karl Rahner represents one of the most significant oftwentieth century Roman Catholic theologians. His life work was togive expression to the inherited tradition in the vastly changed milieuof the modern world. He did not seek only to reformulate particulardoctrines but to re-express the very foundations of theology. Building/ upon the work of Joseph Marechal, he sought to root theology in atranscendental analysis of the knowing and willing human subject.Rahner's methodology remains foundational for many contemporarytheologians. However, questions remain as to the adequacy of thismethodology: Does Rahner, in the final analysis, simply seek tocorrelate the inherited tradition and theological methodology tocontemporary self-understanding, or does he genuinely seek to rearticulatethe Christian tradition and theological methodology in thelight of contemporary self-understanding? We explore this questionin dialogue with concerns drawn from fundamental soteriology.Throughout Christian history soteriological concerns have provokedtheological debate. Soteriology brings to a focus fundamental questionsin Christian theology and practice: the dignity and significance ofJesus of Nazareth; the relationship between a transcendent God and animmanent saving activity; the nature of the Christian vocation; therelationship between the historical order and eternal beatitude;whether theology fits with human concerns and if so, how? We examinethese questions through a study of Karl Rahner 1 s theology and in sodoing inquire as to the adequacy of his theological method and hisattempted re-articulation of the Christian tradition

The substantive economy of money : Karl Polanyi in the tradition of "old institutionalism"

The purpose of this contribution is to suggest an interpretation of substantivist thought initiated by Karl Polanyi. An approach such as this is concerned with “historical economics”, in the precise sense that substantive concepts do not come from a retrospective projection of modern prejudgements, but rather from an attempt to apprehend universal categories of economic analysis in order to clarify the genuine singularities of different economic systems . In doing this I shall highlight the coherence of institutionalist thought founded by economists such as Mitchell, Commons and Veblen, into which the reflections of Karl Polanyi fit. In this way, Polanyi thinks of money as an institution that submerges the economy into social relationships. As an analytical result, stripping money of its institutional character and trying to reduce it to a commodity, can only create chaos. In order to give an account of Polanyi's project, I will show, in the first part of my analysis, how Polanyi wants to move away from the idea that economy is created on pure rational logic. As a result, economy owes its very existence to "institutionalised processes" which produce the very inflexibilities necessary for both collective and individual action. Taking this into account, it is impossible to presuppose the unity of “the cattalactic triad” i. e. external trade, money and markets. From this point on, it is possible, in the second part of this analysis, to specify certain interesting results for the economic history of money. From a transhistorical viewpoint, this institution sets the rules for the quantification and extinction of debts. However, in contrast to modern money, archaic money is characterised by a separation of functions which compel us to talk about “money uses”. Consequently, it is better to speak in terms of accounting and payment practises rather than using the single word of “money”. Furthermore, the independence of money in relation to market is a characteristic of numerous archaic societies. Nevertheless, in spite of their differences, both ancient and modern monies politically produce social integration.Money - Polanyi - Substantivism - Instititutionalisme - Historical Economics

This paper shows that the German economist Karl Heinrich Rau (1792-1870) deserves to be credited as precursor of the marshallian well-known diagram of the supply and demand, or Marshall's scissors diagram. Marshall was aware of Rau's work at an early stage in his economic studies, but he referred to him in an incomplete way and not where he should, silencing his pioneering graphic description of competitive equilibrium. The paper concludes by asserting that the well-known schumpeteriam claim on Marshall's lack of generosity with all those whose work was closely related to his own applies likewise to the case of Rau.Publicad

Do homes in low- and moderate- income areas of a city appreciate like homes in high income areas? Do owners of those lower-priced homes accumulate as much equity as owners of higher-priced homes? Karl Case and Maryna Marynchenko share their results, some of which are quite surprising.Housing - Boston ; Housing - Chicago ; Housing - Los Angeles

"Labor as the foundation of value: an analysis of Karl Marx's theory. A mechanism that has its own contradictions within it."

This thesis anayzes Karl Marx's theory of labor. It begins with a brief biography of the author and his being a student of Hegel until arriving at the criticism of his own master. The reference work for the development of this research is Capital, Marx's major economic work. It is of considerable importance for the understanding of themes such as surplus labor and the resulting surplus value. It also analyzes the relationship between the capitalist and the wage worker and how the latter experiences a sort of alienation and estrangement. The thesis concludes with the contradiction of the capitalist mode of production and at this point it speaks of the collapse of capitalism. In fact, il will talk about the law of the tendential fall of the rate of profit and how capitalism will give way to the communist and socialist society
