During his career Minor participated in approximately 5,000 cases and mentored several prominent African American lawyers, who later in life would make a lasting impact on local and state politics and the law. In addition to Merle, Minor guided the renowned Stokes brothers. Carl Stokes became the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city (Cleveland) in 1967 and served three terms as the first African American Democrat for the Ohio House of Representatives. Louis Stokes was the first African American U.S. Congressman elected from the State of Ohio, and he and his brother Carl would also establish a successful law firm known for taking on high profile and civil rights cases. He is still living at 2200 E 87th Street in Cleveland, an integrated neighborhood comprised of wealthier African American and Jewish families during this time. Brenda McCurdy Rhoads, Merle’s daughter, recalled living next door to the Goldberg family who treated them “wonderfully”. Sources McCurdy Rhodes, B. by Dana, R. (Personal Communication, April 2015). We establish the classification of minimal mass blow-up solutions of the L2 critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation i?tu+?u+|x|?b|u|4?2bNu=0, thereby extending the celebrated result of Merle (Duke Math J 69(2):427–454, 1993) from the classic case b=0 to the case 0<b<min{2,N}, in any dimension N?1.Delft Institute of Applied MathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Best constants in a borderline case of second order Moser type inequalities

    No full text
We study optimal embeddings for the space of functions whose Laplacian \Delta u belongs to L^1(\Omega), where \Omega\subset\R^N is a bounded domain. This function space turns out to be strictly larger than the Sobolev space W^{2,1}(\Omega) in which the whole set of second order derivatives is considered. In particular, in the limiting Sobolev case, when N=2, we establish a sharp embedding inequality into the Zygmund space L_{exp}(\Omega). On one hand, this result enables us to improve the Brezis--Merle \cite{BM} regularity estimate for the Dirichlet problem \Delta u=f(x)\in L^1(\Omega), u=0 on \partial\Omega; on the other hand, it represents a borderline case of D.R. Adams'' \cite{DRA} generalization of Trudinger-Moser type inequalities to the case of higher order derivatives. Extensions to dimension N\geq are also given. Besides, we show how the best constants in the embedding inequalities change under different boundary condition
