However, most studies adopted a framing or content analysis (Agin & Karlsson, 2021; Comfort & Park, 2018), with few analysing text from a macro to micro level. This thesis combines a move-structure analysis (Swales, 1990) of a corpus of 100 social and environmental campaign e-mails with a qualitative analysis of the frequencies and distribution of appraisal markers (Martin & White, 2005), interactant markers (Kim, 2009; Tann, 2010; G. G. Thompson, 2012) and the mood categories of commands and questions (Kim & G. Thompson, 2010; Thompson & Thetela, 1995).The findings of this thesis include the identification of a series of differences in the use of these markers between the one social-issue activist group (Freedom United) and the three environmental-focus groups (The Green Party, Greenpeace and The Story of Stuff) investigated here. Broadly speaking, Freedom United were found to use more JUDGEMENT markers of ‘social sanction’ and less of ‘social esteem’ than the other groups. They also used fewer APPRECIATION markers and more negative and fewer positive markers of all ATTITUDE categories than the three environmental-focus groups. Finally, they use more contractive ENGAGEMENT markers, fewer inclusive interactant markers, and fewer questions than the other groups. To create a more global view of these observations, certain markers were taken as signalling the alignment of the imagined reader (i.e., ENGAGEMENT markers), while others were taken to signal the affiliation of the imagined reader (i.e., inscribed vs. invoked ATTITUDE and interactant markers). While recent studies have proposed frameworks of reader affiliation (Knight, 2010a; Peter White, 2020a; Zappavigna and Martin, 2017), this study takes its maininspiration from, and hopefully develops, Don’s (2019) framework which clearly distinguishes the use of reader alignment, as signalling shared values or stances, from reader affiliation, as indicating shared knowledge, experience or cultural norms. Based on the data, it was observed that, overall, Freedom United spend fewer resources on portraying the imagined reader as highly affiliated than the environmental-focus groups. Of the latter, Greenpeace used the markers of affiliation most strategically to compensate for the reduction in the construed alignment of the reader on the campaign issue towards the end of their e-mails. Despite these differences in the use of markers of reader affiliation, it has been observed that Freedom United, with over five million Facebook followers compared to under 1 million for each of the environmental-focus groups, is more successful in creating an online community (i.e., affiliating their audience) than any of the other three environmental-focus groups. The reasons behind the differences in approach between the one social-issue group and the three environmental-focus groups cannot be established with certainty. Future research is necessary to see if the distribution of markers used by Freedom United is representative of the wider social-issue activist movement. However, if it is, then it could be that emphasizing communal identity with the reader as a means to encourage action (i.e., emphasizing reader affiliation) is felt to be more necessary in environmental than social campaigns. This in turn may relate to the difference in the typical level of empathy the audience feels for human suffering as compared to animal or natural world suffering (reflecting the ‘empathy hierarchy’, Goatly, 2018:233)

Genre Realized in Theme: The Case of News Reports and Commentaries

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the clausal thematic features observed in two newspaper genres —news reports and commentaries— can be interpreted as textual signals of their dif erent generic characterization. This is done through the qualitative and quantitative analysis of a sample consisting of thirty-three English texts, divided into two groups of seventeen news reports and sixteen commentaries, respectively. The analysis focused on the following thematic features: (1) the experiential elements selected as Thematic Heads; (2) the semantic nature of the nominal elements realizing these Heads and their internal structure; (3) the textual and interpersonal thematic choices as part of a multiple theme. The analysis reveals that each newspaper genre prefers certain thematic features and that the dif erences between the two genres are statistically signii cant. It is suggested that these thematic preferences can be attributed to genre-related variables such as the communicative purpose or the subject matter of the text.Depto. de Estudios Ingleses: Lingüística y LiteraturaFac. de FilologíaTRUEpu

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Multi-functionality and Syntactic Position of Discourse Markers : ‘you know’ and ‘then’ in English and ‘ya‘nĩ’ in Arabic. The Case of Political Verbal Interactions in television Broadcasts

    No full text
Cette unité polysémique, polyfonctionnelle, poly-équivalente et poly-catégorielle partage des fonctions avec ‘you know’, ‘then’, ‘I think’, ‘so’, ‘in fact’ et d’autres marqueurs. This PhD thesis deals with the pragmatic functions of ‘you know’, ‘then’ and ‘ya‘nĩ’ (I mean) as autonomous syntactic structures and as operational and multifunctional linguistic units in conversation. Within a pragmatic framework, the research discusses the correlation between position and function, in which the pragmatic value of a marker in initial position is different from that conveyed in medial or final positions. The goal of this study is to contribute to the pragmatic analysis of conversations by analyzing political verbal interactions in Arabic and English television broadcasts. The results of this empirical study show that the multi-functionality of these linguistic items is related to their syntactic flexibility. These discourse markers imply a variety of contextual functions which evolve gradually on a pragmatic scale. The pragmatic evolution of ‘you know’, ‘then’ and ‘ya‘nĩ’ generate complex semantic expressions. These pragmatic units in fact become increasingly complex; they go beyond their basic meaning to acquire progressively contextual implications. Thus, these markers refer to other interpretations and transcend their immediate semantic base. In this respect, they can be substituted according to the context of their occurrence. The results reveal that ‘ya‘nĩ’ can be substituted with other markers from different grammatical categories in English. This polysemous, multi-functional, poly-equivalent and poly-categorical conversational unit shares its pragmatic functions with ‘you know’, ‘then’, ‘I think’, ‘so’, ‘in fact’ and other discourse markers. Pragmatic variation depends on the illocutionary perspective of the speaker, the relation with the hearer and the organization of the verbal interaction. In two distinct sociocultural situations, English and Arabic, it is confirmed that these linguistic items are contextual and multifunctional conversational units. Their role is relevant in a social situation where the interaction between the speaker and the hearer is a salient factor, as in the case of political verbal exchanges in television broadcasts

Mapping English L2 errors : an integrated system and textual approach

    No full text
The main objective of this study is to try and pinpoint the frontier between grammatical (or sentence-level) errors on the one hand and textual errors on the other in university student essays. Accordingly, a corpus of English L2 learner texts, written by French learners, was collected and annotated using several annotation schemes. The first annotation scheme used is based on a model from the UAM CorpusTool software package, which provided us with an integrated error taxonomy. The annotations obtained were then cross-analyzed using the semantic metafunctions identified in systemic functional linguistics. In addition to providing statistics in terms of specific error frequency, our cross analysis has identified some areas that appear to pose particularly difficult problems, i.e. phraseology, and certain semantic and textual constructions. A classification of what we have called textual acceptability errors has thus been established. In short, the thesis begins with an examination of conceptual issues and ends with the proposal for an explanatory model that can describe erroneous occurrences identified in a foreign language – whether they are grammatical (i.e., linked to the language system itself) or textual (i.e. linked to the text) in nature

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Internet revolution and English for Specific Purposes : a diachronic study of promotional rhetorical strategies in three genres from the domain of architecture

    No full text
In this thesis, we intend to characterise the specialised and professional community of architects and the language of architecture. We focus on the genre repertoire used by architects in the English-speaking world to carry out their work, and more specifically on three specialized genres : project descriptions (that feature in brochures and on the firms' Web page), architectural reviews (that feature in specialised magazines and on the Web page of these magazines) and online architects' blog posts, that all contribute, directly or indirectly, to the promotion of architects and architecture firms. This is where the narrative of architecture projects unfolds. The aim of this thesis is to determine to what extent the « birth » or the « migration » of these genres on the Web has had an impact on rhetorical strategies and on the way the story of the projects is told. To this end, we designed several corpora: a first diachronic corpus of project descriptions published in architecture brochures (1970-1995) and then online (1996-2020), a second diachronic corpus of architectural review published in magazines (1970-1995) or online (1996-2020) and lastly a synchronic corpus of architects' blog posts online (1996-2020). The underlying assumption here is that specialised genres « are born », « evolve » and « die » and that any evolutionary process of these genres involves replication, selection and change. We aim to characterise change in these genres in terms of production and reception context and also rhetorical structure, multimodality and language. Several complementary methods are used such as ethnography, moves and steps analysis, multimodal analysis and corpus linguistics. We observe how project descriptions, moving online, become longer, use fewer technical terms, feature more business-driven jargon, and develop visual, linguistic and structural strategies to offer a very complete description of the project and indirectly an elaborate tale of what the practice is capable of doing. We then describe how architecture reviews lose the small amount of polemical language and author presence that they still had, becoming almost exclusively promotional, and how they are restructured and reconfigured online. Finally, we turn to the strategies which are specific to architects' blog posts, that we will characterise as an emerging genre, with all the caution required when using this term. We conclude that Internet plays a major role in the recent evolution of these genres, alongside socio-professional, economic and ideological changes. We also draw some theoretical, methodological and didactic conclusions for the discipline of English for Specific Purposes and more specifically for diachronic genre analysis
