    Gunnery Sergeant Carrel Reavis was reared on a farm near Lawrenceville, Virginia, and joined the Corps in 1943. Placed in an ammunition company, he was stationed in Hawaii during World War II. Mr. Reavis remained in the Corps and saw duty in Korea. Retiring after twenty-one years in the Corps, he went to San Diego, where he trained as a barber and completed an associate's degree in real estate at a local community college. He operated a barber shop and sold real estate in his community for thirty-seven years. Now fully retired, he lives in San Diego, California

    Inventors: Alexis Carrel, Charles Lindbergh, and Otto Hopf How it began: There was a need to keep whole organs alive outside the body in an artificial environment during surgical studies of transplantation. What it does: An organ in a closed chamber of the hand-blown Pyrex glass apparatus is connected to a glass tubing system that mimics blood circulation. Powered by a separate pump and rotary valve for creating pulsating pressure, the apparatus perfuses an organ continuously with a synthetic blood-like fluid that can be renewed aseptically and filtered automatically. Impact on medical science: This pump was the demonstration that life could be sustained by a machine that works very much like the heart.     Alexis Carrel at the Rockefeller Institute after World War I, ca. 1919 Courtesy of Theodor Malinin Alexis Carrel was born and educated in Lyons, France, and he received his medical degree from the University of Lyons in 1900. He remained there, teaching and doing research, until 1904. That year, after a short stay in Montreal, he took a research position at the University of Chicago. In 1906, Simon Flexner invited Carrel to join the Rockefeller Institute, where he remained until 1939. Carrel returned to France that year, as World War II began in Europe. During the early 1940s, in Paris, he headed a Foundation for the Study of Human Problems, which was supported by the Vichy government. Carrel\u27s extreme views on politics and religion remain a subject of controversy.     Alexis Carrel was awarded the 1912 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for pioneering surgical techniques in vascular surgery. His triangulation technique enabled successful anastomosis of blood vessels and subsequently led to advances in blood vessel and organ transplantation. However, Alexis Carrel did not limit his research to the vascular speciality. During the First World War he developed the Carrel-Dakin method of wound irrigation and later his interests lay in aging cells. </jats:p
