Self-Adaptive Fault Tolerance in Multi-/Many-Core Systems

    No full text
This paper presents a novel approach to the design of multi-/many-core systems with an adaptive level of reliability. The approach defines a layer at the operating system level that achieves fault detection/tolerance/diagnosis properties by means of thread replication and re-execution mechanisms. The layer applies the most convenient hardening mechanism to achieve the desired trade-off between reliability and performance by adapting at run-time to the changes of the working scenario. The proposed strategy has been applied in a set of experimental sessions considering a real-world parallel application, to evaluate its benefits on the final system with respect to various strategies selected at design time

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist semaglutide through the lens of psychiatry: a systematic review of potential benefits and risks

    No full text
Semaglutide (SEM), a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, affects neural circuits regulating food intake and satiety, and it provides neuroprotective effects; however, SEM may influence psychological functioning, possibly leading to psychopathological symptoms. This review examines studies on SEM, focusing on its effects on mental health and potential neuropsychiatric side effects. A systematic search in PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted for studies up to March 2025, yielding 342 papers, of which 37 met the eligibility criteria. The selected studies included cohort studies, pharmacovigilance research, open-label studies, and randomized-controlled trials. Findings show that SEM is effective and well-tolerated in various psychiatric populations, with potential benefits in managing binge eating disorder (BED), metabolic disturbances in psychotic disorders, and alcohol use disorder; however, these drugs are also linked to depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, alongside potential antidepressant effects, though this evidence is preliminary. SEM showed to be of great interest in the treatment of BED, acting not only on weight decrease but also on cognitive symptoms linked to the disease. Similar findings, though preliminary, have been observed for the treatment of alcohol and substance use disorder. The use of SEM in mood disorders, in particular depression, is still controversial

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

HERA: Hardware evolution over reconfigurable architectures

    No full text
Since the birth of the Evolvable Hardware (EHW) research field (1993), many FPGA-based evolvable hardware techniques have been devised and proposed to the scientific community. Even if newer EHW systems introduce improvements and new features with respect to the older ones, in most cases they are still based on outdated FPGAs. Thus, they are often limited by the amount of available resources and by the capabilities of the devices used. This paper describes an EHW system based on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA able to exploit features like the direct bitstream manipulation and the two-dimensional dynamic reconfiguration mechanism. Such system has been introduced in 2009 and has been refined in order to cope with real-world applications like the classification problem addressed in this paper

Genetics of nonpharmacological treatments of depression

    No full text
Nonpharmacological antidepressant treatments are effective and well tolerated in selected patients. However, response is heterogeneous and validated biomarkers would be precious to aid treatment choice. We searched Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar until May 2022 for original articles evaluating the association of genetic variables with the efficacy of nonpharmacological treatments for major depressive episodes. Most studies analyzed small sample sizes using the candidate gene approach, leading to poorly replicated findings that need to be interpreted cautiously. The few available methylome-wide and genome-wide association studies (GWASs) considered only electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and cognitive-behavioral therapy in small samples, providing interesting findings by using polygenic risk scores. A deeper knowledge of the genetic factors implicated in treatment response may lead to a better understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of nonpharmacological therapies for depression, and depression itself. Future GWAS are going to expand their sample size, thanks to consortia such as the gen-ECT-ic consortium

A lightweight and open-source framework for the lifetime estimation of multicore systems

    No full text
This paper presents a Monte Carlo-based framework for the estimation of lifetime reliability of multicore systems. Existing mathematical tools either consider only the time to the first failure, or are limited by their intrinsic complexity and high computational time. The proposed framework allows to compute quasi-exact results with a reasonable computational time, without adopting typical (and possibly misleading) simplifications that characterize the existing tools for computing Mean Time To Failure (MTTF). The paper describes the framework with all its mathematical details, assumptions and simplifications; it proves the correctness of the obtained results, by comparing them against the exact ones, and underlines the differences with the simplistic approaches, also discussing time overhead improvements
