The effect of morphology on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene)-based soft actuators: Films and electrospun aligned nanofiber mats
This paper analyzes soft actuators realized as unimorph cantilever beams, in which the active layer can have two different morphologies, i.e., either an extruded film or an aligned electrospun nanofiber mat of the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene). Six different soft actuators are fabricated, with active layers of varying thicknesses and morphologies, to study the electrostrictive effect of the polymer and to evaluate the stiffening properties, the mechanical work, and the blocking forces of the actuators when stimulated by different direct current electric fields. The comparison between the different actuators is performed by introducing weight specific properties, i.e., specific stiffness and specific work, showing improved specific properties for the nanofibers-based actuators. Moreover, the blocking forces, the tip deflections, and the leakage currents of the actuators are evaluated when stimulated by alternating current electric fields. The experiments show faster viscoelastic relaxation and lower electrical power consumption for the nanofibers-based actuators. This study concludes that, thank to its electro-mechanical properties, the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) in the form of aligned electrospun nanofiber mat has high potential to be used as the active layer of electrostrictive unimorph beam soft actuators
Innovative tools for real-time simulation of dynamic systems
In this paper, we present a software architecture, based on RTAI-Linux, for the real-time simulation of dynamic systems and for the rapid prototyping of digital controllers. Our aim is to simplify the testing phase of digital controllers by providing the real-time simulation of the plant with the same interface used for the communication between the control applications and real plant. This unified interface, based on the COMEDI library, allows to switch the controller from the simulated to the real plant without any modification of the control software. Moreover, a set of tools for helping the users in the development of the real-time simulation tasks of the plants have been developed. A great attention has been posed in the automatic generation of symbolic kinematic and dynamic models of robotic manipulators from a description of the robot in terms of kinematic parameters and inertia/center of mass of each link. The system, besides being useful for rapid prototyping of mechatronic control systems, may be used for fault detection, and also as a teaching tool in Mechatronic/Digital Control Courses. Towards poly(Vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene)-based soft actuators: Films and electrospun aligned nanofiber mats
In the pursuit of designing a linear soft actuator with a high force-to-weight ratio and a stiffening behavior, this paper analyzes the electrostrictive effect of the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) polymer in the form of film and aligned electrospun nanofiber mat. An experimental setup is realized to evaluate the electrostrictive effect of the specimens disjointly from the Maxwell stress. In particular, an uniaxial load test is designed to evaluate the specimens’ forces produced by their axial contraction (i.e., the electrostrictive effect) when an external electric field is applied, while an uniaxial tensile load test is designed to show the specimens’ stiffening properties. This electro-mechanical analysis demonstrates that both the film and the nanofiber mat are electrostrictive, and that the nanofiber mat exhibits a force-to-weight ratio ∼65% higher than the film and, therefore, a larger electrostrictive effect. Moreover, both the film and the nanofiber mat show a stiffening behavior, which is more evident for the nanofiber mat than the film and is proportional to the weight of the material. This study concludes that, thanks to its electro-mechanical properties, the poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene), especially in the form of aligned electrospun nanofiber mat, has high potential to be used as electro-active polymer for soft actuators in biomedical and biorobotics applications
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
