Time scale determination for light heavy-ion reactions through small relative momenta correlation measurements
Particle-particle correlation measurements at small relative momenta for the 160+10B and 160+ 12C systems at Elab = 62.5 and 64 MeV, respectively, were performed at the University of São Paulo - Pelletron Laboratory. The experimental setup consisted of a hodoscope composed by fourteen triple telescopes which provide the energy for both light (Z 2 ) and heavy (Z>2) particles. Velocity difference (vdifl) spectra a nd correlation functions at small relative momenta were obtained for many particle pairs. The velocity difference spectrum provides information about the emission order for the particles. The anticorrelation region in the correlation function provides information about the time between the first and second emission. A simulation code that calculates sequencial emission from a compound nucleus and for which the emission order and time scale are parameters was used to fit both the vdiff spectrum and the correlation function. The time scales obtained for light particle correlations are between 10-20 and 10-19 s and they are in agreement with predictions for the evaporation of compound nuclei. Correlations between light and heavy particles give time scales of about 10 -20 which are compatible with fission of the residual nuclei after a light particle emission
Muons in the COSINE-100 experiment: events selection, detector monitoring and annual modulation
Little is known about the nature of dark matter. Its existence is well known due to gravitational evidence and many theoretical models suggest the existence of new particles with properies expected for dark matter particles. There is a global effort to detect these particles and one of the experiments observes signals attributed to the annual modulation rate of dark matter events since the 1990s: the DAMA / LIBRA, experiment uses NaI (Tl) crystals, however, no experiment has observed the same type of signal. COSINE-100 is a joint effort of the KIMS and DM-Ice experiments, and with the use of the same target material as DAMA / LIBRA, tries to reproduce or refute the observed signal. The experiment started operating in 2016 at the underground laboratory in Yangyang (Y2L), South Korea. To guarantee the quality of the data, the background signals from radionuclide decays of the materials and events generated by cosmic rays must be studied. Muons are an important source of background, as they induce events in the crystals in the region of interest to search for dark matter. In addition, during the year, the muons flux undergoes an annual modulation. This work focuses on the study of events generated by muons and, therefore, this dissertation presents a brief description of the COSINE-100 experiment, specifically the plastic panels used to detect muons, procedures for monitoring the stability of these detectors and their gain corretion, as well as results of daily muon flux, its annual modulation and its correlation with atmospheric temperature modulation
Scales of processes involving binary light-heavy ions
~ 20 KeV e 17 MeV < EC.M. < 25 MeV com EC.M. ~ 190 KeV e para o sistema 19F + 12C em 22 MeV < EC.M. < 24.5 MeV com EC.M. ~ 20 KeV. Binary decay cross section measurements have been performed for the system 16O + 10B at 22 MeV < EC.M. < 24.5 MeV (EC.M. ~ 20 KeV) and 17 MeV < EC.M. < 25 MeV (EC.M. ~ 190 KeV ) and for the system 19F + 12C at 22 MeV < EC.M. < 24.5 MeV (EC.M. ~ 20 KeV). The binary fragments were identified by the kinematic coincidence technique. The excitation functions for these systems show strong fluctuations and their average widths were obtained through the analysis of energy correlation functions. The small widths observed for the 16O + 10B (about 20 KeV) and 19F + 12C (about 40 KeV) systems show a constant behavior with the fragments excitation energy and scattering angle. These widths correspond to an intermediate system time scale of about 2 x 10-20 s which is larger than its revolution time. These features suggest the presence of the fusion-fission mechanism, where the compound nucleus spends a lot of time to acquire a relaxed form and thermal equilibrium. For the 16O + 10B system, larger widths (about 350 KeV) were also observed which are related to a faster process. These widths show a clear dependence with the scattering angle in the elastic scattering channel. These aspects are expected for a process where the time scale is comparable to the intermediate system revolution time, like an orbiting mechanism. Theoretical predictions for fusion-fission and orbiting mechanisms were compared to the experimental results and a good agreement was observed
Search for dark matter: dark photons and solar axions in the COSINE-100 experiment
Several astrophysical observations show the existence of dark matter in the universe. However, only its gravitational interaction with baryonic matter is known, requiring the knowledge of other types of interactions in order to understand its nature. Countless theories were developed intending to explain the dark matter particles properties. The WIMPs are the main candidates for some years already. Although several experiments all over the world search for the WIMPs, none have obtained categorical positive results until this moment, which encourages the search for other dark matter candidates. Particularly, bosonic dark matter candidates, whose main examples are the dark photons and axions, are attracting the attention of recent studies, especially due to the fact that modern detectors are beginning to have enough sensibility to be competitive with upper limits determined by astrophysical observations. One of these experiments is COSINE-100, situated at the YangYang underground laboratory in South Korea, whose primary detectors are 106 kg of NaI(Tl) crystals, and is in operation since 2016. The main bosonic dark matter source at Earth would be the Sun, which is responsible for the best upper limits established by astrophysical observations in dark photons and axions models with mass below 1 keV. Until now, experiments are searching for solar dark matter by looking for excess events in their detectors. Nevertheless, in experiments with some years of data, it is also possible to look for an annual modulation in the event rate measured, due to the Earth translation movement. The aim of this work is the study of around 3 years data of COSINE-100, in which events generated by dark photons and axions in the NaI(Tl) crystals were searched. Three models for solar dark matter were analyzed through the search for the annual modulation: dark photons, DFSZ and KSVZ axions, and Kaluza-Klein axions. Since the expected modulations for each model were not found in the data, upper limits for the particle mass of each model, and for the kinetic mixing constant, in the dark photons case, for the coupling between axions and electrons, in the DFSZ and KSVZ axions case, and for the coupling between axions and photons, in the Kaluza-Klein axions case. In addition, excess events produced by the decay of dark photons from the inelastic interaction of Boosted Dark Matter with the COSINE-100 liquid scintillator were investigated. In this case, excess events over the expected background were not found as well
Dark matter search through direct detection: reconstruction and study of events generated by muons in the COSINE-100 experiment
The nature of dark matter is one of the main subjects of study today. Although we can infer its presence in the universe, for example, through observation of its gravitational effects, its composition is still in debate. To resolve this issue, many experiments have been and are being carried out. To date, none of them has shown sufficient evidence for a definitive conclusion. However, one of them, the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, claims to have achieved conclusive results on the nature of dark matter by observing an annual modulation in the events obtained in its NaI(Tl) crystal scintillators, although such results are not confirmed by other experiments. To obtain a verdict on the result of the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, the COSINE-100 experiment was idealized, which uses the same type of detectors to confirm or refute the observations of the DAMA/ LIBRA. The COSINE-100 experiment has been in operation since 2016 at the Yangyang laboratory (Y2L), South Korea. To ensure good data analysis, there is a great deal of effort in the study of background radiation present in the experiment, in addition to its prevention with various active and passive shielding layers. One of the most important radiations studied are muons, which can be candidates for explaining the results of the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, as they also present an annual modulation and can cause events with energy similar to that expected for dark matter in crystal detectors. In order to deepen the study of this type of radiation and improve the selection of events in the experiment, in this work methods for reconstructing the trajectory of muons, as well as the direction of their flow through the experimental setup are studied
Detection of dark photons generated by muons\' bremsstrahlung in the COSINE-100 experiment
The existence of dark matter is supported by abundant evidence from astrophysical observations, which primarily involve gravitational phenomena. Consequently, the only known interaction between dark matter and baryonic matter is gravitational, necessitating exploration of all other possible types of interactions to fully understand its nature. Various theories have been proposed to describe dark matter particle properties, with experiments designed to test them. For some time, the most widely accepted theory within the scientific community has been that of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), though numerous experiments searching for them have not yielded conclusive results. This has spurred the search for other candidate particles such as dark photons and axions, prominent models of bosonic dark matter. Research into these models is expanding, aided by newer technologies enhancing detector sensitivity, potentially providing constraints more precise than those from astrophysical observations. One such experiment is COSINE-100, located in the Yangyang underground laboratory in South Korea. Operational since 2016, it employs 106 kg of NaI(Tl) crystals as its primary detectors. A major challenge for such experiments is distinguishing sought-after events from background signals, particularly muon signals, which are abundant in cosmic rays. However, there exists a model predicting kinetic coupling between muons and dark photons, detectable either directly or indirectly if the muon undergoes bremsstrahlung in a target material. Although initially designed to search for annual modulation of dark matter, COSINE-100 possesses capabilities to detect excess events in its detectors, potentially testing this dark photon model. This study aims to analyze COSINE-100 data specifically for events caused by dark photons generated via muon bremsstrahlung, given the great abundance of muons at Earth\'s surface. Five detection possibilities were explored: direct detection, Compton-like scattering and absorption, and indirect detection via decay into 3 photons (for masses lower than 2m_e ), decay into electron-positron pairs (for masses greater than 2m_e ), and photon oscillation (also for masses lower than 2m_e ). It was found that considering the flux of dark photons produced across Earth\'s surface, a maximum of 10^(-5) detectable events per day per keV deposited in NaI(Tl) crystals per kg of their mass is expected. Furthermore, it was estimated that more than 1 detectable event per year should occur for masses between 10 keV and 1 MeV, and coupling parameters between 10^(-4) and 10^(-2) . Finally, the analysis of the experimental data (from COSINE-100 SET3) in single hit (up to 100 keV) in the crystals showed that the calculated detection spectra with the largest amplitudes are between 10^5 and 10^6 times smaller than that needed to generate a signal, with 90% C.L. In short, these estimates do not provide good prospects for detecting excess events. However, analyses of multiple hit events can be done in an attempt to constrain the dark photon parameter space, if the amplitude of the calculated spectra is large enough (relative to the present background) for higher energies
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
