Depth-based saliency estimation for omnidirectional images
Visual saliency estimation aims at identifying and localizing the areas of images and videos that are attractive for a human subject. In this work, a novel approach for estimating the visual saliency in omnidirectional images is proposed. It is based on the identification of low-level image feature descriptors (i.e., the presence of texture, edges, etc.) coupled with the information about the local depth of the scene. To evaluate the performances of the proposed method, the estimated saliency map is compared with the available ground truth through two objective metrics: the correlation coefficient and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The analysis of the achieved results confirms the validity of the proposed approach
Statistically unbiased free energy estimates from biased simulations
Estimating the free energy in molecular simulation requires, implicitly or explicitly, counting how many times the system is observed in a finite region. If the simulation is biased by an external potential, the weight of the configurations within the region can vary significantly, and this can make the estimate numerically unstable. We introduce an approach to estimate the free energy as a simultaneous function of several collective variables starting from data generated in a statically biased simulation. The approach exploits the property of a free energy estimator recently introduced by us, which provides by construction of the estimate in a region of infinitely small size. We show that this property allows removing the effect of the external bias in a simple and rigorous manner. The approach is validated on model systems for which the free energy is known analytically and on a small peptide for which the ground truth free energy is estimated in an independent unbiased run. In both cases the free energy obtained with our approach is an unbiased estimator of the ground-truth free energy, with an error whose magnitude is also predicted by the model
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Analysis of Quality-Related Parameters in Mature Kernels of Polygalacturonase Inhibiting Protein (PGIP) Transgenic Bread Wheat Infected with Fusarium graminearum
Fusarium head blight, caused by the fungus Fusarium graminearum, has a detrimental effect on both productivity and qualitative properties of wheat. To evaluate its impact on wheat flour, we compared its effect on quality-related parameters between a transgenic bread wheat line expressing a bean polygalacturonase inhibiting protein (PGIP) and its control line. We have compared metabolic proteins, the amounts of gluten proteins and their relative ratios, starch content, yield, extent of pathogen contamination, and deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation. These comparisons showed that Fusarium significantly decreases the amount of starch in infected control plants, but not in infected PGIP plants. The flour of PGIP plants contained also a lower amount of pathogen biomass and DON accumulation. Conversely, both gluten and metabolic proteins were not significantly influenced either by the transgene or by fungal infection. These results indicate that the transgenic PGIP expression reduces the level of infection, without changing significantly the wheat seed proteome and other quality-related parameters. © 2015 American Chemical Society
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Objective Metrics Definition for QoE Assessment for Extended Reality Applications
The increasing advancement of Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies opens new research perspectives in various fields. While traditional multimedia content quality assessment has been extensively investigated, different issues need to be addressed for these novel technologies. In particular, evaluating the quality of experience must consider several aspects, involving, on the one hand, the quality of the displayed multimedia content and, on the other hand, human factors. Due to its inherent subjectivity, defining objective metrics for Quality of Experience is complex. This paper aims to frame the problem of objective Quality of Experience assessment and propose research directions to be pursued in this field
