Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Stima della prevalenza della sclerosi laterale amiotrofica (SLA): elaborazione di un algoritmo dai dati sanitari routinari
Introduzione. La sclerosi laterale amiotrofica (SLA), patologia de- generativa del gruppo delle malattie del motoneurone, presenta su 100.000 ab. una prevalenza di 3-8 casi e un’incidenza di 2-2,5 casi, con età di esordio a 60-69 anni negli uomini e 69+ nelle donne. Il sex ratio è di 1,6. La SLA può essere: sporadica (92%), familiare (7%) e SLA di Guam (circoscritta all’Isola di Guam). Si considerano a rischio: calciatori (specie i centrocampisti), agricoltori, vigili del fuoco. I fattori di rischio sono principalmente genetici; altri fattori sono: esposizione a campi elettromagnetici, fumo, acqua contaminata da selenio e alimenti neurotossici con glutammato (neurotrasmettitore che a concentrazioni elevate provoca lamorte cellulare). Obiettivi. Formulare un algoritmo per determinare il numero dei pazienti affetti da SLA dai flussi sanitari correnti. Metodi. L’ASL5-Pisa ha fornito i dati su ricoveri(2001-2010) e decessi (2001-2008) dei residenti. Algoritmo: il codice ICD-9 per la SLA è 335.20 nei ricoveri e 335.2 nei decessi. Si sono individuati 387 ricoveri e 65 decessi con il codice in qualunque diagnosi.Dopo la valutazione degli errori nel codice fiscale si sono individuati 134 pazienti, per i quali è stata recuperata la storia di tutti i ricoveri indipendentemente dalla diagnosi. Si è quindi fatta una valutazione di attendibilità. Si considerano casi attendibili se: a) presenti più ricoveri con la diagnosi; b) età del primo ricovero compatibile con l’esordio in letteratura; c) deceduti fra 3-6 anni dal primo ricovero. Si valutano sospetti i casi che rispettano il criterio a) e uno dei due successivi. Sono casi inattendibili se la diagnosi compare una sola volta, l’età è incompatibile, o sono deceduti per 335.2 ma senza alcun ricovero per 335.20. Si è poi contattato ilDipartimento diNeuro-Scienze (DNS) dell’Ospedale Santa Chiara di Pisa, presidio accreditato AISLA per la provincia, per confermare la presenza nel loro archivio dei pazienti individuati; per i soggetti non presenti è stato fornito il numero di casi. Risultati. L’algoritmo individua 134 casi di cui 77 possibili casi (46 attendibili, 31 sospetti, 57 inattendibili), presso il DSN sono stati trovati 94 casi di cui 43 tra gli attendibili, 26 tra i sospetti e 2 tra gli inattendibili (23 inattendibili avevano una malattia non SLA).Non sono stati individuati presso ilDSN40 casi (3 attendibili, 5 sospetti e 32 inattendibili).Quindi si confermano 69 casi su 77 (Valore Predittivo Positivo dell’algoritmo 89,6%) e su 71 del DSN (Sensibilità 97,2%) sono esclusi 55 casi negativi su 57 (Valore Predittivo Negativo 95,5%) e su 63 del DSN (Specificità 87,3%). Il sex ratio di 1,4 conferma quanto trovato in letteratura; l’età del primo ricovero (64 anni negli uomini e 67 nelle donne) risulta precoce nel 45%dei maschi concentrata nei comuni di Cascina (4 casi su 8) e Pisa (5 casi su 10). Conclusioni. L’uso di questo algoritmo risulta valido per individuare i pazienti di SLA
