No full textThe trajectory of Hong Kong films had been drastically affected long before the city’s official sovereignty transfer from the British to the Chinese in 1997. The change in course has become more visible in recent years as China has aggressively developed its national film industry and assumed the role of powerhouse in East Asia’s cinematic landscape. The author introduces the 'Cinema of Transitions' to study the New Hong Kong Cinema and on- and off-screen life against this background. Using examples from the 1980s to the present, this book offers a fresh perspective on how Hong Kong-related Chinese-language films, filmmakers, audiences, and the workings of film business in East Asia have become major platforms on which 'transitions' are negotiated
Rendering PostScript<sup>TM</sup> fonts on FPGAs
No full textThis paper describes how custom computing machines can be used to implement a simple outline font processor. An FPGA based co-processor is used to accelerate the compute intensive portions of font rendering. The font processor builds on several PostScript components previously presented by the authors to produce a system that can rapidly render fonts. A prototype implementation is described followed by an explanation of how this could be extended to build a complete system

No full textŠajā darbā autors, salīdzinot PHP un Ruby valodu ietvarus Symfony2 un Ruby on Rails, cenšas uzskatami paradīt ietvaru konceptuālo un dogmatisko līdzību, lai mazinātu skepsi par izstrādes ietvara izvēli tīmekļa produktiem, kas varētu rasties no aizspriedumiem, ka PHP ir sena programmēšanas valoda un nespēj nodrošināt jaunā Ruby ietvara labās iezīmes.
Pētījuma mērķis ir salīdzināt ietvaru Ruby on Rails un Symfony2 komponentes, noskaidrot to atšķirības, kopīgās iezīmes un apstiprināt autora hipotēzi par ietvaru līdzību.
Iegūtie rezultāti norāda uz ietvaru līdzību to komponentēs, kopīgajām paradigmām un izstrādes metodēm. Lai arī komponentes atšķiras ar dažām niansēm, tās nodrošina vienādu funkcionalitāti. Rezultāti apstiprina autora izvirzīto hipotēzi par ietvaru līdzību.In this work author compares the PHP and Ruby language frameworks Symfony2 and Ruby on Rails. Author tries to demonstrate frameworks conceptual and dogmatic parallels to reduce skepticism about the development of the network products, which could result from preconception that PHP is an old programming language and it cannot provide the same good features that Ruby’s new framework Ruby on Rails can.
The study aims to compare the components of Ruby on Rails and Symfony2 frameworks, find the differences and similarities between them and confirm author’s hypothesis that the frameworks are similar.
The obtained results show the similarities of the framework components, common design paradigms and development methods. Although components differ in few points, they provide the same functionality. The results confirm the author’s hypothesis that the frameworks are similar
The ‘insider/outsider’ dilemma of ethnography: Working with young children and their families in cross-cultural contexts
No full textIn this article we unravel the difficulty of being researchers in the homes and classrooms of children and
their families whose origins are, for one of us, very different and, for the other, very similar to our own.
We first situate our work within theories of early socialization and literacy teaching which underpin our
understanding of how young children in cross-cultural contexts learn. We then turn to the question of
working with the families and teachers of these children which poses dilemmas not explained by the theories
presented. We illustrate these through a series of vignettes typifying both the ‘Outsider’ and the ‘Insider’ role.
The stories highlight paradigmatic moments of complexity, clashes or collusion which we unpick in terms of
their generalizability for others working in the field. Finally, we extend theories of dialogue in our search for
a methodology for collaborative work in future cross-cultural ethnographic studies

No full textBakalaura darba ietvaros tika apskatīta WebSocket protokola implementācija, kas ir pamatā dinamiskās tīmekļa sistēmās Ruby on Rails ietvarā – ietvarā iebūvētais Action Cable, un kopienas veidotais AnyCable, kas ir Action Cable papildinājums. Bibliotēka AnyCable piedāvā iespēju kā WebSocket serveri izmantot kādu jau no implementētajiem variantiem vai izmantot citu ar AnyCable savietojamu WebSocket serveri, kas var būt arī paša veidots. Bakalaura darba rezultātā tika izstrādāta ar AnyCable savietojama WebSocket servera programmatūra Rust programmēšanas valodā, kas ir konkurētspējīga pašreiz pieejamajiem Ruby on Rails savietojamiem WebSocket tehnoloģijas risinājumiem, etalonuzdevumos uzrādot labākus rezultātus, pateicoties Rust programmēšanas valodas īpašībām.In this bachelor's thesis the author examined the WebSocket protocol solutions used for developing dynamic systems when using the Ruby on Rails framework - the ActionCable library, which is already built into Ruby on Rails, and the AnyCable library which is an extension of the ActionCable library developed by the community. The Anycable library can be utilised in tandem with one of the already existing AnyCable-compatible servers, that have been developed by the authors of Anycable, or alternatively, one can develop a custom Anycable-compatible server. Resulting from this bachelor's thesis the author developed a new Anycable-compatible server using the Rust programming language. The created server performs comparatively to the already existing solutions, having better results in benchmarks, due to the properties of the Rust programming language
