    This thesis offers a new critical edition of Sophocles’ fragmentary Tyro, with introduction, testimonies, an Italian translation and a complete commentary. Indeed, still today there is no edition exclusively devoted to Sophocles’ Tyro, while the latest commented edition is that by A.C. Pearson (The Fragments of Sophocles), including all of Sophocles’ fragments, and dating back to 1917. A study on Sophocles’ Tyro cannot overlook the problems specifically related to the play, and the difficulties in editing a lost tragedy preserved by indirect fragments. According to the ancient scholia and the Byzantine grammarians and lexicographers, Sophocles wrote two plays with this name. Unfortunately, the only indirectly-preserved fragments (except for a doubtful papyrus) are slight and short, and some of them are uncertainly attributed; this picture does not allow a clear distinction between the two Tyro, that is whether they were originally conceived as different tragedies or the second was a revision of the first. The available material, considered together with the ambiguous mythological sources and the figurative and dramaturgical evidence, allows only a speculative and incomplete restoration of the plot(s). I tackle the mythological background, iconographic and dramaturgical testimonies, homonymous title, plot, characters and chronology – with a specific focus on the second Tyro – in the general introduction, where I also clarify my methodological approach. Afterwards, I consider and analyse separately the 19 surviving fragments of Sophocles’ Tyro included in my edition. The fragments’ text is based on the autopsy of all the manuscripts, which led me to reconsider some of the previous editors’ choices. Finally, the commentary investigates some textual, exegetical, lexical, stylistic, metrical-rhythmical and dramaturgical aspects, explaining the context of the transmission of the examined fragments, their possible interpretation and their hypothetical re-contextualization within the play

    This article explores the relationship between the making of things and the making of people at the Bronze Age tell at Százhalombatta, Hungary. Focusing on potters and potting, we explore how the performance of non-discursive knowledge was critical to the construction of social categories. Potters literally came into being as potters through repeated bodily enactment of potting skills. Potters also gained their identity in the social sphere through the connection between their potting performance and their audience. We trace degrees of skill in the ceramic record to reveal the material articulation of non-discursive knowledge and consider the ramifications of the differential acquisition of non-discursive knowledge for the expression of different kinds of potter's identities. The creation of potters as a social category was essential to the ongoing creation of specific forms of material culture.     The sand intrusion in railway tracks in sandy regions can significantly change the mechanical behaviour of tracks and thus threaten the safety of train operation. This paper presents substantial field tests on both sandy and clean railway tracks to study the effect of sand intrusion on the longitudinal resistance of ballast bed and the vibration behaviour of track structures. After that, a 3D multi-scale the discrete element model is developed to study the micro-contact between ballast particles and the vibration behaviour of sandy tracks during train passing in detail. Also, the effect of train speeds and axle loads on the mechanical behaviour of sandy tracks is discussed. The results show that the sand intrusion increases the vibration acceleration amplitude of rail and sleeper by 11.3% and 50.3%, while ballast bed decreases by 44.9%. Besides, the sand intrusion significantly changes the energy distribution in the track, wherein the frequencies of the highest energy of rail and sleeper are increased while that of the ballast bed is decreased.     Sandy beaches occupy more than one-third of the global coastline1 and have high socioeconomic value related to recreation, tourism and ecosystem services2. Beaches are the interface between land and ocean, providing coastal protection from marine storms and cyclones3. However the presence of sandy beaches cannot be taken for granted, as they are under constant change, driven by meteorological4,5, geological6 and anthropogenic factors1,7. A substantial proportion of the world’s sandy coastline is already eroding1,7, a situation that could be exacerbated by climate change8,9. Here, we show that ambient trends in shoreline dynamics, combined with coastal recession driven by sea level rise, could result in the near extinction of almost half of the world’s sandy beaches by the end of the century. Moderate GHG emission mitigation could prevent 40% of shoreline retreat. Projected shoreline dynamics are dominated by sea level rise for the majority of sandy beaches, but in certain regions the erosive trend is counteracted by accretive ambient shoreline changes; for example, in the Amazon, East and Southeast Asia and the north tropical Pacific. A substantial proportion of the threatened sandy shorelines are in densely populated areas, underlining the need for the design and implementation of effective adaptive measures.Accepted Author ManuscriptCoastal Engineerin

    This study evaluates the dissipation of terbuthylazine, metolachlor, and mesotrione at different depths in soils with contrasting texture. The field trial was conducted at the Padua University Experimental Farm, north-east Italy. The persistence of three herbicides was studied in three different soil textures (clay soil, sandy soil, and loamy soil) at two depths (0–5 and 5–15 cm). Soil organic carbon content was highest in the clay (1.10%) followed by loam (0.67%) and sandy soil (0.24%); the pH of soils was sub-alkaline. Terbuthylazine, metolachlor, and mesotrione were applied on maize as a formulated product (Lumax®) at a dose of 3.5 L ha−1. Their dissipation in the treated plots was followed for 2 months after application. The concentrations of herbicides were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The dissipation of terbuthylazine, metolachlor, and mesotrione could be described by a pseudo first-order kinetics. Terbuthylazine showed the highest DT50, followed by metolachlor and mesotrione. Considering the tested soil, the highest DT50 value was found in clay soil for terbuthylazine and metolachlor, whereas for mesotrione there was no difference among soils. Significant differences were found between the two soil depths for terbuthylazine and metolachlor, whereas none were found for mesotrione. These results suggest that soil texture and depth have a strong influence on the dissipation of terbuthylazine and metolachlor, whereas no influence was observed on mesotrione because of its chemical and physical properties

    This is an interview with author Lloyd (Sandy) H. Ellis Jr. about his book Sacred Landmarks and his forthcoming book which extends the first work beyond the city limits. In the first part of the interview there is discussion about the first book and how his new book will extend beyond the city limits to look at other sacred landmarks around the city. The next part of the interview Ellis notes the problems with getting access to some institutions and differences between religious groups and the clergy. Throughout the interview unique aspects of these landmarks are noted as well as religious differences. The later part of the interview Ellis notes how the churches have evolved and how parishioners have given insight to these landmarks. At the end of the interview discussion concludes with how the builders deserve credit along with the designers in construction of these landmarks. Ellis also points out how many founding pastors provided the initiative, fund raising, and drive for the construction of these institutions
