Application of Crowd Sensing for Sustainable Management of Smart Cities
Cities are key contributors to the climate system alteration and the urban environment is, in turn, significantly affected by the climate change effects, such as the increasing occurrences of extreme weather events, which compromise citizens’ life quality and health status. Nevertheless, hubs of economic and innovation and have the potential of leading the needed green transition by implementing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. The high heterogeneity of the urban environment requires the implementation of site-specific and targeted actions that need to be supported through fine-grain data collection of the most significant environmental parameters such as air temperature and pollutants concentration. Recent advances in sensor technology and data communication capability allow to conceive the active participation of citizens in the urban environmental monitoring process, moving the analysis to a human-centered approach: citizens become, at the same time, vectors of data and target of data-processing that could be used also for boosting the required behavioral change of individuals and increasing resiliency of territories and communities. Wearables are already implemented for the smart management of the healthcare sector and their usage can be easily extended in the coming future for a better management of other sectors involving citizens’ everyday life
Assessing Energy Communities’ Awareness on Social Media with a Content and Sentiment Analysis
The development of energy communities has the potential to support the energy transition owing to the direct engagement of people who have the chance to become “prosumers” of energy. In properly explaining the benefits that this phenomenon can give to the population, a key set of channels is represented by social media, which can hit the target of citizens who have the budget to join the energy communities and can also “nurture” younger generations. In this view, the present work analyzes the performance of the topic “energy communities” on the main social media in order to understand people’s awareness of its benefits and to assess the societal awareness of this topic in terms of engagement and positive sentiment. The analysis conducted first concerned the definitions and conceptualization of energy communities of academics and practitioners, completed through a content analysis; we then focused on the fallout of these themes on social media and on its engagement (to understand if it was capable of generating a positive attitude). The social media analysis took place through a platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze communication channels. The results show that there is still poor engagement with the energy community theme in social media, and a more structured communication strategy should be implemented with the collaboration between social media and practitioners/academics. Despite previous studies not analyzing how social media recall the topics of academics and practitioners related to energy communities, this is an important aspect to consider in order to conceive integrated marketing communication for promoting energy communities to citizens, as here demonstrated and proposed for the very first time
A perspective on managing cities and citizens' well-being through smart sensing data
Urban development and growth have a significant impact on the environment, contributing to ongoing climate change and affecting the resilience of urban communities. However, cities also have the potential to become innovation centers and drive the urgent green transition. Smart cities, in particular, rely on digital services to enhance citizens' quality of life while minimizing their environmental footprint. Therefore, public authorities and policymakers must leverage technological innovations and smart sensing to gather and process relevant data in real-time, supporting citizens' well-being through dedicated services. This work aims to provide a perspective toward healthier and more resilient smart cities by integrating personal, contextual, and environmental data to enhance Early Warning Systems and resiliency planning. Existing studies on the usage of smart sensing technologies in healthcare and environmental assessment services are reviewed to present existing opportunities in both fields. A critical analysis of the background is provided, highlighting the potentials and challenges of the proposed smart city management protocol, leveraging data directly collected by citizens - viewed in this sense as data prosumers
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
